Baseball Falls 8-5 in 11

This one is mostly on the bullpen.  Can’t be too mad about it as they have (IMHO) overachieved up to this point frankly.

Had a bad feeling about this one from the start today as Logan Jernigan walked the leadoff man in the first inning (huge pet peeve of mine in any inning) and then with the bases loaded walked in a run (even bigger pet peeve of mine) for the Spartans to spot them a 1-0 lead before the Pack ever came to bat.

Jernigan got yanked at that point after only 0.2 IP (which seems to be becoming somewhat of a trend here just recently for Pack starters) and throwing 35 pitches, only 14 of which were strikes.  Andew Woeck took over and held UNC-G in check during his 3.1 innings of work (0 runs on 2 hits, 3 Ks).

State had a 4-2 lead going into the 8th, fell behind 5-4, then tied it to go to extras.  Lost it in 11.

Ryan Wilkins took the loss (2-1) going 3.0 innings and giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 2 hits.  He also struck out 4 and walked 2.

Jake Fincher had a great day going 3 for 6 with 2 RBI.  Brett Austin went 0-fer, snapping his hitting streak.

RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 16 NC State took a lead into the eighth inning, but blew a save for the first time this season, as a late homer propelled UNC Greensboro to an 8-5, 11-inning victory on Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (16-6) bullpen came into the game with a perfect 11-0 record, six saves in six attempts, and a combined 2.32 ERA. Those stats fell by the wayside in a wild midweek contest when UNCG (9-10) roared back from a 4-2 deficit in the top eighth. T.J. Spina hit a two-run bomb to put the Spartans on top 5-4. State rallied to tie in the bottom half, but neither team could finish the deal in regulation. The deadlock held firm until the 11th, when UNCG scored three to capture the win.

Pack Baseball next in action Saturday at 1pm in Charlottesville vs the Cavs.  Frankly they can probably use the extra day off (two if you consider no Wednesday game this week either).

    Very unusual for Wilkens, but he can’t shut the other team done every time. Really just the two run homer down the line-kind of contact that equals a foul ball 80% of the time.

    With Trea out of the lineup, we”ll have to keep the runners left on base down. 12 team strikeouts isn’t horrible for an extra inning game, but 6 combined by Austin and Armstrong took its toll.

    Check that, Morgan is our big bat that whiffed three times I get the JC guys named mixed up early on.

    I think we’ll be a dangerous team once Turner gets back-even if he never quite gets 100%. He is a Golden Spikes type player and take that out of any teams arsenal and things get thrown out of whack. Seen at a places like FSU before.

    Still 4-4 against North Carolina teams leaves a bitter taste. We haven’t even traded line up cards with Wilmington, ECU and the Heels yet.

    He’ll get past this year no matter. Too many injuries and too many super Sophs going to return as Jrs next year.

    He better watch out for it big time next year. Yow has shown cat like reflexes if its apparent you’re heading into a “rebuilding” year. Flat out not to impressed by the prospects that just came in so he better pull a near “Rodon class” for next.

    That said, this year can be a terrific club if it can work through some kinks and get all the way healthy. All the talent and depth will be there soon. I just hope we don’t play ourselves out of a regional host (or at large bid) before Turner gets back.
