ACC Basketball Power Rankings

We are a quarter of the way through the 2012-2103 college basketball season and things are starting to settle in a bit. With that said, I feel like this set of power rankings from ESPN make some sense.

I think I would probably put Miami in front of Maryland right now based on the strength of their schedule and who they’ve played. Clemson just lost to Coastal Carolina by ~20 points; what does that say about how bad Boston College and Wake Forest must be!!

3. Maryland
4. Miami
5. Virginia
6. North Carolina
7. Virginia Tech
8. Georgia Tech
9. Florida State
10. Clemson
11. Boston College
12. Wake Forest

2. NC State. When Scott Wood is hitting 3s, Lorenzo Brown is being aggressive, C.J. Leslie is scoring and Richard Howell is pulling down double-doubles — as they did against Stanford on Tuesday — the Wolfpack is hard to beat. State continues to top the nation in field-goal percentage (53.0).

6. North Carolina. Coach Roy Williams was talking about the need for the players to “buy in” after a close win against East Carolina, followed by an ugly loss at struggling Texas. Not a good sign 11 games into the season. Up next: McNeese State.

7. Virginia Tech. After an impressive 7-0 start, the Hokies have now lost two of their past three, including a surprising drop to sub-.500 Georgia Southern. Erick Green continued his scoring tear, however; he has now scored at least 20 points in 10 straight games.

12. Wake Forest. It’s gotten so bad in Winston-Salem that coach Jeff Bzdelik has stopped taking live questions on his call-in show. At least the Deacons beat Furman to push their record to 5-5.

    Looking at your list I would put UNX above Virginia and Maryland, simply because of their advantage in the ACC officiating. And G.T. is better than Va. Tech. Miami above Maryland and UNX!

    No doubt that Carolina will get a boost in the polls after their rebound win against McNeese St. Never mind that pesky loss to Texas.

    Maybe for this year Wake Forest ought to put a T in the middle of their logo.

    Virginia should drop pretty far down that list. They lost yesterday to 1-10 (now 2-10) Old Dominion. Their other two losses are also to CAA teams, and the CAA is not particularly strong this year.

    We all know that once league play begins, UNC will fly up that list quickly. The OOC refs just aren’t familiar with their tendencies.

    It’s Duke and NC State and then everyone else. We will be able to coast to a second place finish IMHO. Maryland and Miami will have a chance at the bubble.

    It really is sad what has become of this conference. Adding Cuse and Louisville will certainly help. Heels won’t stay down for long, but they are down, way down.

    Seen NC State in person a couple x since the Michigan. They are hungry and aggressive. We are in for a hell of a ride in this cluster of mediocrity that has become the SwoffCC.

    This ranking is more about the coaches than the power. The top 6 teams have decent to great coaches, while the bottom 6 are an absolute coaching disaster.

    I don’t buy that analysis 61. You can’t yet judge the coaches at VT and GT. Hamilton has shown he can get it done at FSU. The Noles lost a lot. While I have always thought Bennett is a solid coach, he hasn’t done squat at UVA. Wellman attaching himself to Bzzz will get him fired. Wake fans are very disappointed.

    I think Virginia is going to be a lot better than people expect. I think they finish #2 or #3.

    The Hoos have some tough losses. Theyre going to have to get a lot better if you are talking about #2.

    FSU can but won’t.

    I will bet my left nut UVA doesn’t sniff no.2. Perhaps I am being overconfident, but we should be able to sleepwalk to no. 2 in this crappy conference. I think Miami and Maryland are both better than UVA.

    Hamilton will go no farther than his talent takes him. An ACC champ that can’t defend its home court any better than the Seminoles have done so far this season doesn’t impress me.

    FSU has qualified for the tourney 4 years in a row, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2010-11. They have finished third in the league the past 3 years. That’s not half bad.

    And regarding the talent argument, I think the same can be said for most coaches, including Roy, who is by all accounts a hall of fame coach.

    Yup, and that’s why I said “I think Virginia is going to be a lot better THAN PEOPLE EXPECT.” We’ll have to wait and see 😉

    I think they are well coached. They beat Wisconsin AT Wisconsin earlier this year too.. that ain’t easy.

    Man I love the holiday tourneys. 🙂

    …and I’ll be very surprised if UVa finishes dead last.

    EDIT – Oh, and don’t look now…but guess who’s top 5 RPI.

    Thanks for the heads up on the RPI numbers. Duke #1; NCSU #5; Miami #7; MD #44 and UNC at “Ta DAAAA!” #50, that made my day.

    Not that it will probablly have any impact on the polls tomorrow. Would still not surprise me if we are still lower than UNC.

    But the real test will be as the season rolls on and the W-L records are starting to mean something.

    HOWEVER….I am one more happy camper…..and THAT is why Santy is wearing Red and White….

    Yes they did.

    Hokies looked much more like pretenders than contenders as well. Then again, I think CSU is better than expected, but time will tell I suppose.

    The only coasting I’m familiar with regarding NC State is coasting to the bottom.

    I’m sure the ACC refs will ensure there is no coasting involved; we’ll have to work our asses off and then some to get second.
