November Looms (Corrected)

Someone hacked my account last week. Those who know me well know I’m just not the reasonable, positive type, like the misguided fool who wrote under my byline tried to be.

I understand the point he was trying to make (as idiotic as it indeed was). Essentially, due to the inherent, imbalanced power structure, managing expectations in college football is far different than “accepting our place” in college basketball. There just aren’t many 10-win coaches out there, so they have to be created over time. Oregon and Virginia Tech are the only two programs in the past 20 years that gained and then maintained their status as part of college football’s elite. The Virginia Tech model is certainly one we can follow (we have the resources), and while TOB will arguably leave State a program better off than he inherited, it’s time for us to replace him with someone who can advance it to the next level, because he clearly isn’t capable.

My first call: James Franklin. He’s young (40) and energetic, has NFL experience; he’s widely appreciated as a solid recruiter (Top 25 in 2012), and is winning at Vanderbilt (by Vanderbilt standards). He was Yow’s chosen coach-in-waiting at Maryland before she left (he was not her replacement Kevin Anderson’s, however), so there’s clearly an opportunity…but — big but — Franklin currently makes around $3 million per year (estimated) in Nashville, so someone’s pockets deeper than mine will have to open up to make that kind of commitment.

No sleep ’til Atlanta.

I sure hope so, but after HWSNBN, Amato, Lowe, and now TOB, I just don’t have the energy – wake me for the press conference.

We’ve wasted a great deal of money on TOB, but even if we can’t hire a “proven” coach next year, we still need to make a change. We’ll face a rebuilding year, and that would be better done with TOB’s replacement in place. If TOB stays on, the hole will only get deeper.

    Charlie Strong!!!!!!

Franklin can do much better than NCSU. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have him. But I do not see him leaving Vandy for us. Maybe the Yow relationship is the key. Sure hope so.

Ok, I defended TOB last week I am done. We need change now.

  6. StateFans 11/03/2012 at 3:44 PM #

I wouldn’t say we’ve ‘wasted’ a bunch of money on TOB.

We’ve gotten a program that is definitely in better shape than it was when he arrived while only paying about a million a year.

You could make the case that we’ve gotten a bargain in the financial side with such a low expense when compared to what we’ve gotten

  7. doug 11/03/2012 at 3:45 PM #

No way we should have lost this game. I am fed up, not that my opinion matters.

  8. StateFans 11/03/2012 at 3:47 PM #

    doug, everyone’s opinion matters!

  9. eas 11/03/2012 at 3:47 PM #

No more, no more, no more! Clean house and hire some dang energy! If you can’t figure out we have a issue with slow starts, lazy recruiting and lack of change over 5 years then you are insane. TOB will not change not will he make any changes. Thank you TOB for giving us a little more organization and good kids. Now pack it up and enjoy the beach……

I heard Butch Davis is on the market.

We could make the Franklin in and TOB happen. Folks haven’t talked much of it lately by the Vaughn Towers Revenue was droppef considerably during TOB era.

Yows pitch early on that made the Sean Miller freakonomics seem plausible was the influx of season tickets, so the strategy seems to already be signed off by Woodson, ect.

TOB will leave for another job instead of “retire” and the HMS Buyout is going to pound us good, but fight we must.
This coming from a TOB backer who thinks that things change and that’s fun. His done far more good here then he gets credit for.

Like SF I don’t think the money spent on TOB was lost. As compared to when he came the program is in better shape. As to his future ….

  13. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 4:02 PM #

lol why would Vanderbilt’s coach come to nc state?

  14. chriscgray 11/03/2012 at 4:03 PM #

It’s pretty obvious that TOB is happy with a 7-5 record and bowl game win about every season. No excuse can be made for today. What seemed to be a promising year turned on its head fast. We need someone who can recruit and plays to win instead of not to lose. Plus it would be nice to have a running game, it’s hard to believe we don’t with Creecy and Thornton, so I blame coaching for that. It’s the whole reason we can’t be consistent. Charlie Strong would be awesome by the way

To win big at this level you have to get the best players. It’s been shown the only way to get the best players to a North Carolina school is by cheating your ass off. There’s too many D1 schools in North Carolina trying to pick the leftovers of NC recruits who aren’t going to the SEC schools. NC State is an undesirable job for football coaches, so I would tread carefully thinking we’ll be moving on to a Charlie Strong or an SEC coach or any other proven coaches.

Our best chance at being elite is getting Bill Cowher to say ‘yes’. Do not hold your breath for that.

If we were to somehow hire away Vanderbilt’s coach that wouldn’t be a home run. That would a freaking grand slam in the bottom of the 9th by the pitcher who just pitched a perfect game in the 7th game of the world series.

  17. Wufpacker 11/03/2012 at 4:17 PM #

Strangely, I’m not even that upset. Once it was 14-0, I figured we were toast and took BJD’s model and only popped to our game occasionally while watching others.

And while by definition it’s hard for me to care about being apathetic, DY and the WPC should be VERY concerned about the apathy that’s about to set in with the fanbase across the board.

Apathy = fewer dollars. I honestly thought that there would be no way DY would make a change after this season no matter what happened, but I’m beginning to rethink that.

The coaches quit last week in the 4th quarter. The team quit today at the kickoff.

Even if Dr. Yow was thinking last week that she could not afford to fire this group, her hands are tied now.

    She has to!!

  19. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 4:23 PM #

Just imagine the tone of CF when we come out and crap the bed early against the Deacs next week. Think today was bad? It will be UGLY.

^Wufpacker. I feel exactly the same way!

The Franklin/Yow relationship is very deep. I was in Orlando a few weeks ago and ran into a Wake Forest coach at 4Rivers ( best BBQ in Florida), who was on the recruiting trail. He said that if we would not have come back against Maryland last year, Franklin would be on the sidelines now. He said the contract was all but agreed to and that if TOB goes in the tank this year, that would be our new coach. Today, TOB officially went in the tank.

  22. mafpack 11/03/2012 at 4:33 PM #

Now that Amato’s recruits are all totally gone… TOB doesn’t look so good anymore. “Discplined” teams apparently doesn’t mean talented or even fully prepared teams. Yay. #timeforbasketballseason

lol are you serious? Well I was at the chik-fil-A in Morrisville last week. Talked to Peyton Manning there who said if we didn’t beat FSU then Brian Kelly was set to fly in that evening to take over.

can we please not start this crap

  24. motorhead 11/03/2012 at 4:51 PM #

Yes don’t start….I remember a few years ago I was on a flight with Calipari……
