CBS: Jaqawn Raymond to transfer
CBS Sports is reporting that NC State guard, Jaqawn Raymond will transfer from NC State. (Link)
The news of Raymond’s transfer comes as little surprise. The little used Raymond was a last minute ‘sleeper’ addition to Sidney Lowe’s last class. The upgrade in recruiting ability and talent coming into the NC State program exhibited by Coach Gottfried’s staff makes it pretty clear that Raymond’s opportunity for playing time in Raleigh over the next three years would be very limited.
The following is a quick look at NC State’s current and projected roster for the coming years presuming Raymond transfers.
Senior Class
(1) Scott Wood (Wing)
(2) Richard Howell (PF)
(3) DeShawn Painter (PF/C)
Junior Class
(4) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)
(5) Lorenzo Brown (PG/SG)
(6) CJ Leslie (PF)
Sophomore Class
(7) Tyler Harris (F)
(8) Thomas de Thaey (PF)
2012 Commits
(9) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(10) Rodney Purvis (PG/SG)
(11) TJ Warren (F)
(12) Hold for recruit
2013 Commits
(13) Jaqawn Raymond departure
(1) Departure of Scott Wood
(2) Departure of Richard Howell

Definitely expected this from either Raymond or Tyler Harris with the talent we have coming in this year.
Harris is more talented than Raymond and can carve out minutes in the rotation. It was going to be hard for JW to get any PT this year.
I hope he does well wherever he lands. He is from Georgia so maybe he could snag a spot at GT or UGA.
Best of luck, Jaqawn. Thanks for the effort you gave the Pack – hope you find a spot that suits your game (UGA could DEFINITELY use you !).
Harris is and will be better than DeThaey. I think DeThaey was a bit of an overreaction to first year anxiety. From what I saw of him, he is not good and has limited upside.
At least Harris has athleticism, is younger, has better pedigree and more upside.
I feel you need 4 year players who end up being important by their Jr or Sr year. I felt/hoped he would be one of those.
Good luck
Can’t blame him, really. He was going to be 3rd on the depth chart at best and would only see mop-up duty save for a rash of injuries like UNC had in the Elite 8 requiring him to be on the floor. He’ll probably transfer to a school where he has a chance to get some minutes.
Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.
Boy, does next year ever look like “the year”. The following year, we likely lose 5 top guys… next recruiting class has to be stud-laden.
It is sad when the goals of a player come up against reality especially when that player is a “holdover” from the previous staff.
As Alpha say I can’t blame him transferring and I wish him well.
As with everyone else not surprised he’s moving on, but I am happy that Coach Gott at least gave him a chance to come and try to earn some time on the floor.
Beyond that, this does mean that we could hold a spot for Amile and still go after a few of the transfers and other recruits on our list for this year without threatening that offer. Interesting.
^^^Ah, there’s the rub. If you are going to play big boy BB using high-level recruits you are going to have years with mass exodus and unpredictable scholarship availablity. You better be able to keep recruits coming in your door or your going to have some really bad years. See Arizona this year.
Any chance we pull in another guard this year? Raymond wouldn’t have played much, but he gave us some depth in the event someone (Brown/Lewis/Purvis) got hurt. Another Alex Johnson type senior transfer actually wouldn’t be a bad add here, just as insurance.
With a shortage at the Guard position you wouldn’t think the staff would have pushed Raymond out the door this year…unless they have some gut feelings about something happening.
At the banquet the other night, Gott told reporters he wasn’t expecting anyone to transfer, so I think this may have surprised him a little. It sure would have been nice having that “insurance” guard, but like everyone else, I can’t blame the kid for wanting to play, and I hope he really does well.
So now can go get Jefferson and Young
DeThaey is a freshman. Not everyone is a impact player their freshman year (insert Googs reference here, an exaggerated example to make a point). Shouldn’t assume he’s a bust simply because he didn’t make a splash this past season. There’s a roll for his skill set. He’ll be a solid contributer before he’s gone.
Good luck JR.
This is a good move for everyone. JR is a helluva athlete. He will do well in the right situation.
I thought JR transferring would free up a scholarship for the upcoming year, why is he under 2013 then?
Honestly I was hoping he would develop into a lock down defender to gain playing time. Someone you can insert to lock up the best guard of our opponent. CJ Williams was that guy this year and I was hoping Raymond would be that guy next year.
technically we could sign 2 more in this class, or 3 more if Leslie leaves…a 6 man class.
* I would not be surprised if we did sign two more in this class. Particularly if we get the guy from UConn.
* I am expecting Torian Graham to go to prep school or some kind of school that ultimately re-classifies him into next year’s class. Would make more sense for State as well.
I don’t think we get the guy from UConn, I think this would be more for a potential slot for Young.
I’m always saddened by transfers, but this one doesn’t surprise me if true. There were signs from as early as the pick up game with UNC this past summer that Raymond seemed to have a long way to climb.
He played the least minutes of any scholarship player. With the recruits coming in — particularly at the guard slots — he’d have to think that it was only going to get tougher.
He seemed like a good kid, and seemed really excited during our tournament run. I wish him nothing but the best at his next stop.
His tweets today have been super. He is gracious and kind toward NC State. He’s clearly a Wolfpacker for life. Best of luck to him always!!!
Hate to lose you but good luck!
