Torian Graham decommits a few hours after re-committing. I need COMMITTING!! [Updated 4:45pm]

After we found out earlier that Torian Graham had re-committed to the Wolfpack through a YouTube video, word has now hit the media that he is again “uncertain” of his choice.

From WRAL:

Multiple reports Thursday said Arlington Country Day (FL) shooting guard Torian Graham has re-committed to NC State, but Graham told WRAL that his commitment is ‘up in the air’.

Graham would only say that ‘something has come up’. WRALSportsFan will have updates as information is available.

As expected, Twitter blew up on the reports as well:

Jeff Gravely: BREAKING: Just spoke with @TorianG4 asking about commit to NCSU. “It’s up in the air. Something has come up.” Asked that I call back later.

Publicity? I understand social media is a part of the game now, but really? Really?

I really feel sorry for any 17 year old who appears to want to do something like attend NC State (which he has now pledged to do on two separate occasions) and may be receiving some kind of odd pressure from family/friends that is contrary to his obvious desires. I also would love to be a fly on the wall around the program tonight as Graham was supposed to be visiting and basically celebrating with his new family.

Backing the Pack has this update late this afternoon.

Since that news, we’ve gotten plenty of baseless speculation, because Twitter is nothing if not a highly efficient speculation delivery vehicle. The closest thing to non-speculation we have so far is this Pack Insider tweet which says Graham wants to be at NC State but “some things need to be taken care of.” So, uh, stay tuned.

We’ll try and keep you in the loop here & on Twitter. In the meantime you can follow real time conversation on a host of topics by clicking here.

Edit: apparently academics related…who knows…this is a strange situation.

I coach 14U girls fastpitch and 16U boys basketball. They change their minds on all things, big and small, constantly. So, whatever…

May be Gottfried doesn’t want him anymore.

  3. tvp1 12/22/2011 at 3:59 PM #

According to one report, Graham is getting pressure from family members who do not want him here for some reason.

  4. 8pack 12/22/2011 at 3:59 PM #

Gottfried may have found out some info that would change things (ie grades, eligibility issues, reclassify to ’13, etc)

^^^Which is one reason (among many) why it is not a great idea to say things like this:

“Gottfried should pull the scholarship offer right now. I know I don’t want him anymore. What a punk.”

  7. tuckerdorm1983 12/22/2011 at 4:08 PM #

do we have five scholarships available? does that mean Jefferson can’t come? what is going on?

I feel bad for the kid. Seems like he wants to be at State but the rumors are some family members aren’t on board and he’s trying to please too many people. He doesn’t have any parents to defend his decision as his decision. The other rumor is that it has to do with transcripts and eligibility. Either way, he wants to be here and now he’ll forever catch crap for committing, decommitting, recommitting and redecommitting. I have a bad feeling about his brother Tyree. He decommitted the first time right after Tyree came home from Rutgers for a visit.

I hope we don’t give him crap and push him away. Lot of hardship in his life and he’s trying to do the right thing.

Decommitments always look bad… But this could be damaging to the positive momentum of the program.

  10. IMFletcherWolf 12/22/2011 at 4:14 PM #

Don’t be tough on the kid. This doesn’t sound like his decision. Something is going on that we are not aware of.

  11. tuckerdorm1983 12/22/2011 at 4:15 PM #

I believe Leslie committed, then decommitted and then committed?

  12. nav 12/22/2011 at 4:15 PM #

^^Agreed. I don’t think he would put himself out there like this unless he did think that he was going through with the commitment. Of course he could be mental though.

Wow, the hyperbole and over-reaction here is amazing. He’s a kid, no one has any idea about what is going on, yet the original headline sported a “WTF” and the rest of the article is laced with other profanity, while replies include name-calling, speculation and suggestions for recriminations. Talk about embarrassing “our” program.

Kudos to those cooler heads who have replied here.

It could be something as simple as Torian was supposed to wait and talk with his family. Maybe they wanted to let the other Schools know before going public. I think the speculation needs to calm down.

My daughter was a D1 basketball player. We had a rule that the word “commit” would not come out of her mouth until we all talked and she made a final decision. She almost committed after her first official visit. She almost committed to a Coach who was in the process of getting fired. So we, as a family, decided no comments until she was sure.

People forget how youtube videos and tweets take a life of their own.

  15. SuperStuff 12/22/2011 at 5:01 PM #

Youtube video could have been a goof. Not sure why everyone got excited about something like that until something more official was announced. Plenty of players say they are going someplace and 24 hrs later commit to another team. They are making a tough decision. If he’s meant to play at NC State then fine, if not then good luck to the young man. We have 4 solid players coming to play so I’m happy. If we need to shelve a scholarship for next year I’m cool with that.

People should not judge this kid before any details come out. And let’s hope he ends up in the right place for himself, not us.

  17. BJD95 12/22/2011 at 5:03 PM #

My take is simply this – Word of God is a cesspool, especially if QJ is still involved. I would prefer that we pretend the place didn’t exist.

  18. NCStatePride 12/22/2011 at 5:04 PM #

Plywood, I don’t want other people messing with my stuff so I don’t mess with theirs. The urge is strong, trust me…

Similar to what SuperStuff is saying, the example I gave in the forums was AJ Davis who was originally going to attend UNC, then committed to NC State at the last minute. That is one of the things that got some of the media claiming that there was “smoke” to a potential NCAA “fire” at NC State.

  19. SuperStuff 12/22/2011 at 5:05 PM #

QJ is gone at WOG. They don’t seem to have a good track record for coaches. I would be surprised if one has lasted 3 yrs.

WOG should find themselves a Bob Hurley type coach (St. Anthony) that will stay forever and bring in the money. That guy has done it the right way.

  20. logarithm 12/22/2011 at 5:11 PM #

Just realized that in the video, he said “Big decision coming tomorrow, my college decision.” That might suggest he had planned to make it official tomorrow and the person making the video posted it early. Could be he was going to talk to his family tonight after he attends our game.

I just hope he ends up staying true to himself. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to make this kind of call without parents’ support. Rodney Purvis’ mom seems like a good mom and a straight shooter. Somebody get her to call Torian and reassure him to do whatever’s right for him.

Hopefully my 4:45 edits make everyone happy.

Let’s now focus on discussing what is actually going on as opposed to the reactions to what is going on.

  22. MrPlywood 12/22/2011 at 5:32 PM #

    ^Better, yes. Thx.

  23. NCStatePride 12/22/2011 at 5:34 PM #

    Thanks, StateFans.

    BJD95-

I believe you should know a little more about WOG before you insult them. WOG is far from a “cesspool” as you describe them. In fact, you made that comment not even knowing that QJ is no longer there. I have had a daughter attend there and I know a lot of people involved and your words are as far as they can be from the truth.

  25. Wulfpack 12/22/2011 at 5:51 PM #

I really could give two shits about recruiting. Trust me, I know how vital it is, especially when you are trying to revive a dead program. However, these big headed kids and their handlers/entourages really get to me. I’ve been around them and it’s sickening what they are doing to the sport. I’ll start caring when the kid shows up in Raleigh. Until then, it’s all just competitive banter.
