Dick Sheridan coaching tree?
Bruce Fowler has been hired as Furman University’s 22nd head football coach. This made me wonder, how big is the Dick Sheridan coaching tree? I listed the person and their most recent position or two. I know I missed people, if you name some others I will add them to the list!
Bruce Fowler (Head Coach at Furman – 2011): He began his collegiate coaching career in 1984 as a graduate assistant under Dick Sheridan.
Robbie Caldwell (Head Coach at Vanderbilt – 2010 / 2-10): Caldwell joined the staff of coach Dick Sheridan at North Carolina State, where he was offensive line coach, coaching 14 All-ACC linemen from 1986 to 1999.
Bobby Johnson (Head Coach at Furman – 1994 – 2001 / 60-36) (Head Coach at Vanderbilt 2002-2009 / 29-66): Johnson became a longtime assistant coach at Furman University. He spent many seasons under the watchful eye of headman Dick Sheridan. Was 1-0 in bowl games at Vandy. Made 3 postseasons at Furman.
Clay Hendrix (Assistant Head Coach and OC at Air Force – 2007 – present)
Mike O’Cain (QB Coach at VaTech): A top assistant under Sheridan from 1986-92.
Shane Montgomery (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at Youngstown State)

Not exactly the most impressive coaching tree. At the I-A level, a combined — Caldwell, Johnson, O’Cain — overall record of 72-116 (0.383) and conference record of 39-89 (0.305).
Shane Montgomery was also head coach at Miami (Ohio) from 2005-2008. His overall record was 17-31 with a MAC title in 05 (Roethlesberger’s senior year). Resigned in 08 under pressure after 3 straight lackluster seasons. So, not really any better than the others.
Regardless of records, interesting information.
Shane Montgomery, of course, was also the Head Coach of Miami of Ohio for 3 or 4 years.

Speaking of coaching trees…I haven’t see where anyone has mentioned that Al Golden (Miami’s new head man) coached with Tom O’Brien for a few years at Virginia and then coached for Tom O’Brien at Boston College from 1997-1999.

No MAC title in 05…Miami tied for MAC east title with Akron in 05 and I believe won east outright in 07(only 6-7 overall, though)
Ricky Logo served as dline coach with Caldwell and Johnson at Vanderbilt. Unsure what his status is after the coaching changes this season. I also believe Ted Cain was on the staff as offensive coordinator.
Anthony Barbour was offensive coordinator for Clayton HS this past season. This was after his previous tenure as Smithfield Selma’s head coach the past few seasons.
Overall record would be 41-40 if you remove Vanderbilt. I mean, let’s be serious guys, Vandy is the Duke of the SEC in football. I think it’s what we would call a statistical outlier.
Ler us not forget Buddy Green, I believe he is the Defensive Coordinator at Navy. I know he coached under Sheridan and I think he was a NC State Grad, class of 76. Almost a head coach for State, however O’Cain was awarded the position.
How about Shad Santee? He played at State and got a grad degree in Spts Mgmt. He left State to go to UT-Chat when Buddy Green was coaching there.
Is he still coaching?
Kent Briggs coached with Sheridan at NC State. Defensive coach for UConn and then head coach at Western Carolina Univ. for several years and was relocated to the AD Dept.
The Kind: In reference to your question, Whatever happened to Shad Santee. He is now most notablty known for being the subject of the book, Gay Bash. He and his neighbor worked diligently, immorally and illegally to violate the civil rights of a gay neighbor trying to force him out of their neighborhood.
