Noted NC Politician (& UNC Alum) comments on the scandal

Joe Mavretic, the former Speaker of the NC House, recently had this blunt assessment of the problems in the Athletic Department at UNC, and his view is the polar opposite of what UNC System President Erskine Bowles stated earlier today:

” There is no need for internal investigations, or for assistant coaches to resign, to determine who is responsible for the damage to the flagship’s reputation. There are three university employees whose job is to ensure that calamities like this NEVER happen. Those three employees are the head football coach, the athletic director and the chancellor. These three persons have the authority, and the responsibility, to prevent athletic scandals and they failed.

“It does not matter how they failed, why they failed or who caused them to fail-THEY FAILED! If the Board of Governors and the Trustees want to send an unmistakable message to the university system of North Carolina and set a national precedent for the way these embarrassments should be handled, then the head football coach, the athletic director and the chancellor must be replaced FOR CAUSE.

“If this flagship university actually has a national reputation for academic integrity, any less severe action in this matter sets the precedent for how much damage these three can do for sport’s money.”

Mavretic, from New Bern, graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later earned his Masters at George Washington and was a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College. Mavretic then served as a Marine fighter pilot, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Joe returned to North Carolina and was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly in 1980. Serving a total of 15 years after first being elected in 1980, Mavretic became nationally known when he led a bi-partisan effort to oust long-time House Speaker Liston Ramsey – a member of his own party. Mavretic then served as Speaker from 1989-90, and later retired from public office to private life.  Today, he is still active politically as a frequent guest on the television show NC Spin, and also as a writer.  As outspoken as ever, Mavretic has a long history of calling things exactly like he sees them, something he is well respected for across all of NC.

Amen. While I like Holden Thorp and think he could have been a good chancellor, the feeling I get is that he didn’t have the guts and/or mandate to challenge the athletic powers that be in this. If he gets fired, it’s his fault for falling in line with Baddour and Butch too quickly.

The more they deny their involvement, the more people are going to see them as guilty. And they are! Guilty of negligence. Guilty of hiring Butch and Blake and not overseeing them. Guilty of politicizing this process, and wasting the taxpayers time and money. They may be the nicest guys in the world, but they are also responsible for what has happened. That’s called…life.

Let us all hope that the state’s news media will at least do it’s job in quoting such a statement from someone of Mr. Mavretic’s standing whose stated opinion demonstrates what real leadership would and should look like in this matter.

Having said that, I will not be surprised to see the state’s media outlets completely ignore and not report upon Mr. Mavretic’s statement. Instead, they will likely place their focus behind the blue-tinted comments of support from Bowles, who earlier today stated how proud he was in Baddour and Thorpe’s leadership. Really? And we’re supposed to believe he’s impartial in those opinions.

Shall I throw up right here or out behind the house?

Since he is a Democrat, as it seems most of the print media is, and CH is the liberal capital of NC, they may actually pick up on his statement.

    I can’t see it happening.

He’s right and I agree – but I’d be very surprised if what should happen does happen.

Spoken like a Marine Corps Officer. My salute to the Colonel.

“If the Board of Governors and the Trustees want to send an unmistakable message to the university system of North Carolina and set a national precedent for the way these embarrassments should be handled …”

They did that already, circa 1990, and for ultimately no good reason. Good luck getting them to do it to themselves.

    Never cared for Mavretic.

Just another North Carolina Democrat. The most hard headed breed of scum bags to grace the face of the earth.

Nothing but good. Honestly, I didn’t think Baddour was too bad of an AD, IMHO… more reason to be happy to see him leave.

Even the AJ Green story has a UNC element:

Boys I must confess: I’m having some theological questions about hating unc so much.

I certainly enjoy a cheap laugh at the expense of other people, typical slap stick comedy and I was always a Harold Lloyd fan. I enjoy seeing people startled by a back fire on a pickup, the random child dropping their candy or ice cream, the kids on the short bus eating boogers, and now this train wreck of a mess in Orange County.

I’ve pulled out my Presbyterian Book of Order. From what I can tell there is nothing especially out of line about being happy with 10,000 trailer parks in such a state of despair or reveling in the rejection of 2nd servings of watercress sandwiches down at the local country club. I’ve spoken with ministers and they always come back to wondering who shall judge but God.

My response is always, “but the bas.tards deserve it” and thus usually ends my discussion with said pastor.

It might be a bad thing boys but I hope the knuckles drag across the pavement for years over there.

You don’t get to be a Marine light bird without knowing BS when you see it AND calling it out. I have to wonder if his political affiliation would be the same if he were starting out now.
His assessment was spot on but he forgot the BOT. Thorpe wasn’t around when BMFD was hired but they were as well as Bad-doer.

McCallum, we can all be forgiven. The Assistant Minister at my Presby Church is a young State grad! We shall get absolution for all of our sins in this case!!

“Not only the director of athletics, but other officials in the athletics
department, the faculty athletics representative, the head coaches and the other institutional
administrators outside of the athletics department responsible for such matters as the certification
of athletes for financial aid, practice and competition, are expected to assume a primary role in
ensuring compliance. Even though specific action has been taken to place responsibility
elsewhere, these individuals will be assumed to be operating on behalf of the institution with
respect to those responsibilities that are logically within the scope of their positions. Their failure
to control those matters so as to prevent violations of NCAA rules will be considered the result of a
    lack of institutional control.”

That comes straight from the PRINCIPLES OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL
AS PREPARED BY THE NCAA COMMITTEE ON INFRACTIONS.

He is correct. I’d go so far as to fire Irksome Bowels too but I think that’s a pipe dream
