NC State Athletics Year In Review Summary

Thought I would share a brief summary of NC State’s performance in the 2009-2010 school year as well as a few observations. For each ACC sport (as well as gymnastics and rifle) I have listed State’s finish in the standings, overall record, ACC record, the ACC champion, the national champion and the finish and points awarded in the Directors Cup standings. (Note: the finish for swimming and wrestling are from the ACC championships, not the win/loss record)

Observations
Cross Country (M) and Rifle (SEARC) won conference championships.

In ACC competition for sports with win/loss records, only Swimming (M) and Swimming(W) with records of 3-2 had a winning record. Gymnastics had a winning record in the EAGL as did Rifle in the SEARC.

Of the 15 sports with win/loss records, 11 had overall winning records.

Cross Country(M) was the only ACC program to finish above 4th place. Gymnastics(EAGL) and Rifle (SEARC) also finished above 4th.

Outdoor Track (W) and Volleyball both finished last in the ACC, as did Rifle in the GARC.

Virginia won the most ACC titles with 7, followed by Florida St with 5 and Georgia Tech with 4.

ACC schools won 8 national championships. Duke, North Carolina and Virginia won 2 titles and Maryland and Boston College won 1. (Boston College won the the national championship in Men’s Hockey, a non-ACC sport).

In the Directors Cup standings, NC State ranked 89th, which is last in the ACC. In the next week or so I plan on posting an entry with a more detailed look at the Directors Cup for NC State as well as the rest of the ACC.

As maligned as NC State’s men’s soccer program is, it did earn the most points of any sport in the Directors Cup for a 17th place finish.

It is very interesting that only 2 ACC sports had winning records, while those sports had the fewest ACC matches per sport.

Good entry. It shows why we dropped to 89th in the director’s cup. We only had one sport make it to the round of 32 in their respective NCAA tournament…men’s soccer.

Great write-up. Thanks for taking the time to do this. State sure does finish 7th or worse in a lot of sports.

Question on the Cup placing. In men’s xcountry how do you finish first in your conference but 27th overall? Is this a national ranking or did we actually finish 27th in the national championship meet?

WV Wolf: That is correct, NCSU finished 27th in the national championship meet

Really nice summary. This type of work serves as a really nice archive that we can refer to in the future. I hope you can find the time to do this summary every year.

It’s says a lot about the loyalty of our fans that we still care about the program with results like these. At most schools, the fans run and hide and deny that they have anything to do with teams this bad.

Great write up! Shows a lot of consistency in our programs under L Fowler…Great job this year Lee! What a well deserved Athletic of the Year Award! Pathetic….

Really interesting post. Does anyone have the time to look at these results and see how much of a bonus Deb Yow would make, if these were on her watch? And compare this to what is in Lee’s contract?

    Thanks

Thanks for the report – great picture of where we are (and where Lee Fowler took us to during his tenure).

This is great information for all of us to have as we enter the Debbie Yow era – If we can repeat this summary on an annual basis we’ll have a great yardstick for where Yow takes us (about which I am optimistic).

Fantastic summary. I’d personally like to see three additions.
    1) Maryland’s finish in each item. From the looks of it, they won only one ACC title this year, yet finished way better in the Director’s cup standings. They had to have consistently finished higher in virtually everything. I’d like to see that comparison.
    2) The budget spend versus the conference. As much as I wanted Fowler gone, the ONLY thing that I could say in his defense is that his results had to be taken in context with the budget that we spent versus the rest of the ACC. It may not be fair to expect a 1rst place finish when we have 12th place spending.
    3) Maryland’s budget spend versus the conference.

It’d give us a great idea of where we are really at (results versus resources) and a good view into who we’ve just hired. I’m not trying to make this into a Yow post, but I think it’d be some empirical data that would be hard to question. I do know the budget information is tough, but item #1 seems to be fairly low hanging fruit.

Great info and agree that it will provide us with a good benchmark.

Maybe we should put that chart on a t shirt.

    Bad officiating!

The above list is totally unfair to Lee Fouler! Not one mention of bass fishing!

Cliffs Notes version – We sucked at pretty much everything. Again.

The key term here is…’AGAIN’. The last 5 to 6 years of Lee Fowler’s tenure was much worse than the first 5 years. Not much more needs to be said for anyone who can think their way out of a paper bag.

    “Bad officiating!”

    ^Exactly!

I would like you all to know that I had nothing to do with the Fresca promotion back in the late 90s where they were handing out Fresca in the Carter Finley parking lot.

Neither did Lee Fowler and I consider that to be his bright spot.

One thing for sure, under Jed we were a model of consistency!
