This didn’t take long. Obviously the AD search is just getting started but you have to believe Purcell will be in the mix.
Bobby Purcell’s name was already being mentioned as a possible replacement for Lee Fowler even before the N.C. State athletic director announced that he was stepping down on Tuesday. Now that the job is officially open, the long-time director of the Wolfpack Club has thrown his hat into the ring as a candidate.
“I have expressed my interest to chancellor (Randy) Woodson that I am interested in the job,” Purcell said. “It’s something I’ve tried to prepare myself for my entire career and I feel like I’m ready for it. I certainly hope I get the opportunity.”
Purcell, 55, was a finalist for the job in 2000 when Fowler was hired from Middle Tennessee State.
Here’s another story from the N&O about NC State’s options. Ken Tysiac does a good job of explaining some of the choices NC State will need to make when deciding on the next AD.
The question of where N.C. State should turn for its next athletic director has never been more complicated.
In the wake of Tuesday’s announcement that the university was parting ways with Lee Fowler after almost 10 years, it would be natural to scour the ranks of top college athletic administrators with ties to the school.
But if recent athletic director hires across the nation are any indication, Fowler’s replacement could come from almost anywhere. Six of the 16 athletic directors hired at schools in Bowl Championship Series conferences since 2007 came from positions outside of college athletic administration.
We will have much more as the search continues to evolve.
