Wolfpack Women earn NCAA berth, will face UCLA in first round
While the men’s basketball team may have been relegated to finishing its season in the NIT, the Wolfpack Women earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face off against No. 8 seed UCLA in the Kansas City Regional. State’s first game will be in Minneapolis and a victory would likely set up a second round match up with No. 1 seed Nebraska. View the full bracket here.
The N&O and WRAL covered the selection show Monday evening as Coach Harper and the team took in the action from Backyard Bistro in Raleigh. Check out the video here.
Harper, Wolfpack rewarded for season
The Backyard Bistro restaurant was awash in a sea of red and white Monday night as N.C. State women’s basketball team and fans listened anxiously for the invitation they had waited all season to hear.
They didn’t have long to wait.
Less than 15 minutes into the hour-long NCAA Women’s Selection Show, the restaurant erupted with cheers and shouts of “Oh, yeah!” as N.C. State’s name was called as the No. 9 seed in the Kansas City Regional of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

:p
Obviously, I am ecstatic about the women and their success. Of the regions, we got a pretty good draw–I think we can get by UCLA and, personally, I think Nebraska’s overrated as a #1 seed. I look forward to cheering the women’s team on during the tournament–all the while wishing that the determination that Coach Harper has shown in her first year at NC State is transplanted into every player, coach and athletics administrator.
That said, can I just take a minute to talk about how, once again, the Tar Heels have managed to secure a post-season berth that they don’t deserve? I don’t think there’s a women’s basketball analyst who even thought Carolina would make the tournament, much less be a #10 seed.
To put this in perspective: the Wolfpack Women won 7 of their last 10 games, including a strong run in the ACC tournament before losing to Duke in the finals. For their efforts, they are given a #9 seed.
On the other hand, the Carolina women *lose* 8 of their last 10 games and somehow they end up with a #10 seed.
It’s garbage.
Thank you for sharing that perspective. I don’t follow the sport very closely, but I was definitely wondering about what I felt like was a disconnect with the Carolina bid.
Way to go LADY WOLFPACK! very excited about this women’s program.
