NC State travels to Marquette

Marquette shoots for their 25th consecutive out of conference regular season win today by hosting the Wolfpack in Milwaukee.

State comes into today’s game with a 5-1 record. Check out the comments that we made last year prior to Marquette’s visit to Raleigh:

Today is the day that we naturally step into elevated interest in the 2008-2009 basketball season. You can almost say that today is the day that we really kick off our attention to the season as the Wolfpack will host Top 25 ranked Marquette in the RBC Center.

The Wolfpack has done and an adequate job of holding serve in the early part of the season en route to establishing a 7-1 record against soft competition while squandering a great opportunity to beat [Top 25 ranked Davidson Northwestern] a couple of weeks ago.

Due to the opponent, tonight’s game represents almost as much about the heritage of the NC State program as it does the importance of the current season. Marquette, then coached by the legendary Al McGuire, was the Wolfpack’s opponent and victim in the 1974 NCAA National Championship game.

Reading those comments from last year’s match-up can be heart breaking for Wolfpackers if you remember how we let this one slip through our fingers.

watching online. Early on, offense looks alot more competent than last game. Everybody moving, inside/out passing instead of just back and forth around the perimeter. Wood looks more comfortable. Better rebounding, too. Marquette is small, that may be helping. They haven’t stepped up the pressure yet – I’m sure it’s coming.

Wood took a shot in the eye, he’s in the locker room. Josh Davis in for him, Mays in for Javi.

I am very frustrated watching this game…and get more and more frustrated with Mays.

Still trying to figure out how Wood gets hit hard enough in the face to send him to the floor and then to locker room and the call on the play is out of bouds off of us.

Marquette is on a 9-0 run with Mays on the floor.

On Marquette’s rebounding: “They are not bigger than NC State, they are just more active.”

Scott Wood looks like he took a right cross.

BTW MArqutte’s coach annoys me to death.
Something about the way he looks.

    WOOD HITS A THREE!!

We now have one from Javi and one from Scott. That ties what we got vs NW.

EIGHT turnovers in 15 minutes…and that doesn’t include a few rebouds we couldn’t grab and had go out of bounds to them.

On our very first inbounds after their very first basket we threw the ball away. So frtustrating.

I said it before the season and I said it in the only other game I watched. Our guard play and basketball IQ is atrocious.

A Degand sighting!!! We put him in after we are down 9 points with our horrible guards.

Everyone keeps talking about what stuff “looks” like. Is this game on TV?

lot of turnovers out of Tracy Smith – playing hard, but making mistakes. Mays… still not good.

    * This has reached that ‘unacceptable’ level of the way we lose — out rebounded, easy shots for them.

    * Degand’s first offensive possession in the game sees him able to handle pressure with the dribble and then find the right pass against the zone that igniates good ball movement and we hit a three.

    * Degand drives and finishes and hits first lay-up of the day.

Scott Wood couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat

Degand does exactly what Mays can’t. Catch, agressive move to the basket, coverts a layup. His straight away speed is still there.

slightly more running today. Of course, only 25 points to show for it. Horner playing well. Javi out with a hamstring injury?

They said Javy is hurt. Can you imagine how bad we will be without even his guard play? The saddest thing is I see no way we can improve this year. We have a bunch of guys getting the most out of their severely limited talent. One actual ACC player in the whole lot.

wolfbluff, game is on MASN and some other regional sports networks.

In short, poor rebounding and poor guard play put us down 11 at halftime.

Ghost, Horner is OK on offense but he is getting used on defense. Smith not playing great defense either. Degand looks pretty good so far. Sure hope Javi can come back — he’s had too many turnovers but he is definitely our best PG. Overall at the half, too many turnovers (many unforced) and too many lapses on defense both inside and out on their 3-point shooters. Painter and Howell both played briefly and looked like they will be helpful players eventually… but both also looked lost on defense. Josh Davis made some mistakes but he is so active on the boards and got 1 or 2 inside buckets.

We’re not doing a very good job running the offense through Smith and when we do get him the ball Marquette is collapsing on him and getting turnovers.
