Carolina Hurricanes Are To Thank For Golfer Matt Hill
Faceoff for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Hurricanes and Penguins is only hours away. And I’m sure State golfer Matt Hill will be watching.
CBS Sports makes mention of Matt Hill on their golf page in a column by Steve Elling (thanks to ruffles31 for sending me the link).
Different game of dump and chase
Mainstream websites and newspapers don’t spend much time on college golf, a niche within a niche sport, but every once in a while, something warrants attention, which is certainly the case with N.C. State’s rising Matt Hill. Last week, he won the NCAA Central Regional and advanced to the nationals next week at Inverness Club in Ohio, where he will seek to win his seventh individual title in his past eight starts, an amazing run at any level. Hill, you might recall, was mentioned here a few weeks ago when he noted that he picked the N.C. State program because Raleigh had an NHL team and he’s a native Canadian.
An article on gopack.com gives some more detail on Hill’s college choice.
Matt Hill, a life-long hockey fan and player, could have gone to one of several upper Midwest and West Coast schools, but chose NC State instead because it was the warmest city that had an NHL franchise, a place where he could play golf year round, where a drizzly day in the lower 40s is considered the dead of winter, not late spring. He’s now a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan, though his playing schedule and school work has limited him to only a handful of games at the RBC Center this season.
Good luck to Matt Hill next week at the NCAA Championships and good luck tonight to the Canes at the Igloo. Let’s Go Canes!
Let’s use this entry for an open thread for the Hurricanes tonight!

Even furthering the NCSU and Carolina Hurricanes connection, I received an email 15 minutes ago from the GoPack.com store where I can purchase both Wolfpack gear and Hurricanes gear. I can buy a 10″ Plush Mr. Wolf for $10.99 and an official NHL Carolina Hurricanes Jersey for $114.99. If I don’t like that combination, I can get a Adidas Brick T-Shirt that has NC State in 3D Lettering for $17.99 to wear on the days I don’t wear my Eric Staal “It’s STAAL Good” Hurricanes T-Shirt for $19.99.
Go PACK!
Go CANES!
Way to go Matt! Hockey players are fun dudes on the golf course!!
Empty net goal just killed me! I’m hoping I can get to a game next week since I’ll be in Chapel Hole and Raleigh all week.
I was hoping to have a big rivalry with one of my old Army buds who is a Blackhawk fan, but it’s not looking good now. But, my Cardiac Canes have fooled me before!!
Go Canes!!!
Canes outplayed the Pens for most of that game… Malkin and Fluery were upstoppable….
ouch.
I still know this team can pull it off. I hope they know that.
Canes still have Cam Ward… Everyone knows what he is capable of. Looking forward to game 3.
It’s time the Canes did some ‘smacking around’ those smart-assed Pens. 2 dirty hits: 1 starter slowed and 1 starter out. How quick would Malkin be on one leg?
