Wolfpack Wins Three Championships In One Day
Despite NC State’s absence from the NCAA Tournament, Saturday was a good day for the Wolfpack athletics program, winning individual national championships in wrestling and diving and a conference championship in gymnastics.
Wrestler Darrion Caldwell won the NCAA title in the 149 pound class, defeating Iowa’s Brent Metcalf, the defending national champion, by a score of 11-6. Caldwell becomes the 4th NC State wrestler to win a national championship. In a Maryland-esque show of class, Metcalf shoved Caldwell post-match and cost Iowa a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct. This was Metcalf’s second career loss, both coming to Caldwell.
Kristin Davies won the NCAA title in the platform dive, State’s first ever women’s national championship and the first national championship in swimming and diving since Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones. (Thanks to ncsufan23 for the heads up.)
The gymnastics team won the 2009 EAGL (East Atlantic Gymnastics League) championship hosted in Reynolds Coliseum, their 4th title (1999, 2000, 2007, 2009). Defending champion West Virginia finished 2nd, followed by North Carolina, Pitt, New Hampshire, Maryland, George Washington and Rutgers. Lauren Deuser and Brittany Vontz were in a 4 way tie for the top score in the uneven parallel bars and the Wolfpack had the best total team score in the parallel bars and the floor exercise.
Congrats to Darrion Caldwell, Kristin Davies and the ladies on the gymnastics team, well done!

I am happy to see the Wolfpack win a conference championship in anything. Congrats to all!
The Pack also had Kristin Davies, a platform diver, win an individual national championship today. Three championships in one day is impressive for a school that hasn’t been winnning alot lately. GO PACK!
WV Wolf: I appreciate the heads up, I have updated the article
I read about the shove. Bush league. From the play-by-play it looks like Darrion owned the guy. Well done!
The whole part about the shove involved Caldwell doing a cartwheel on the mat as time expired. Either way, it was stupid of Metcalf. Congrats on the other teams doing well. By my calculations, Caldwell’s is the 1st national championship under Fowler. Congrats Lee. It only took nine years.
CONGRATULATIONS, ALL.
it’s nice to see these things occasionally. now, if their success were only infectious. . .
our family are big wrestling fans. we were watching the match on ESPN when everyone else was watching basketball. Caldwell pretty much sealed the match in the first two periods. it was a big upset. the backflip/shove at the end was (IMHO) poor sportsmanship on both wrestlers. too bad. it was a helluva match.
As a former high school wrestler, I have a special place in my heart for Caldwell’s championship. Congrats to him and welcome to a club that includes former Wolfpack greats Tab Thacker, Sylvester Terkay, Matt Reiss and Scott Turner as the fifth individual national champion from Wolfpack Wrestling.
Congrats also to Kristin Davies for her individual national championship in diving. Hopefully this signals the beginning of a renaissance for the once proud Wolfpack swimming & diving program.
Congrats also to the Women’s Gymnastics Team for their 4th conference championship.
While I will always concentrate more on the Big 4 sports (football, M & W basketball and baseball), I always follow the Wolfpack in all sports. Even if we were great in the Big 4 sports, as someone who wants to see NC State succeed in all environments it would disappoint me if that’s all we were good at. I want to see a well-balanced athletics program, so the success today makes me happy.
A hearty congrats to those Wolfpack student athletes who brought home a trophy for Wolfpack athletics today and made Wolfpack Nation proud!
good stuff! i posted your story on my facebook page.
Mark Stevenson is one of the all time great NC State coaches. He should have a building named after him.
Kick Ass, keep it going brother. We as pack fans understand life better than others. Its just the way it is.
GO PACK!
A National Champion…how about that.
Congrats Mr. Cauldwell. You are the man!
Here’s hoping this becomes a trend.
And please forgive the earlier ommission…
Kudos to Ms. Kristin Davies and her National Championship!
Great way to start the day with a positive about NCSU Athletics. GO PACK!
Congratulations to Davies, Caldwell, and the entire gymnastics team. You guys made alot of people proud yesterday. Thanks for all your hard work.
Congrats to the Pack! I’m especially proud of the gymnastics team… I’ve not kept it a secret that I’m short, so I’m always proud about athletes that are my size
Temporary hijack: Baseball won 10-3 last night to even the series with Wake. Post to come Sunday night/Monday morning.
Here’s a good link to the Caldwell/Metcalf match:

Congratulations to Caldwell, Davies, and the gymnastics team!!
SFN: Thanks for the link
Congratulations to all deserving Wolfpackers. I hope this is just a prelude to what is to come. I have a gut feeling that a football championship will be here before long. It may take a little lnger on bb, but I haven’t completely given up.
It’s a funny moment, yesterday, because wrestling has been a consistent source of pride at NC State, and Carter Jordan (as I have said before) is probably the best hire Fowler made on his own (in 2005).
Way to go!!!
Great day for several of our non-revenue performers / teams. Well done and congratulations!
Caldwell was named MOW. Nice.
