Volleyball ACC Losing Streak Comes To An End!

Tonight in Reynolds Coliseum, the NC State volleyball team snapped a 56 game ACC losing streak with a 3-1 win over Boston College. Witnessed in person by myself and good friend and fellow stat major ruffles31, the Pack now stands 1-0 for the season in the ACC and 7-9 overall. Congrats to Coach Stubbs and the ladies!

Here is (not the greatest in the world) video from my Blackberry of the BC service error on the final point, I like the victory cartwheel at the end.

Our last ACC victory was also against BC in the 2005 season. And if you were wondering, that improves our ACC volleyball record under the leadership of Lee Fowler to 4-143.

We decided to go out to the match on a whim, we hadn’t really planned on going and we certainly hadn’t planned on seeing a long-overdue victory!

    I’ve been going to those games for the past 5 years in the student wolfpack club and now I can finally say I have seen us defeat an ACC opponent.

    “In addition to the Jayhawks, whom he visited this past weekend, the Tigers and the Bears, Wall is considering North Carolina State, Oregon and Kentucky, which Brian Clifton said “may not get an official visit since he’s been down there a few times.” NCAA rules permit only five official visits.

    Wall was scheduled to visit Oregon on Oct. 4, then Kentucky on Oct. 11, but after his mother, Frances Pulley, suffered a mild stroke on Aug. 28, Wall said he focused all of his attention on tending to her.

    “Everything that wasn’t about her got put on the back burner,” Wall said. “It’s scary because I’m so close to her. She’s doing better now, and we’re starting to try and reschedule some visits.”

    He admits that the scare made him re-evaluate picking a school that would put a plane ride between him and his mother.

    So does that make him lean toward the Wolfpack?

    “It’s definitely something that you’ve got to look at,” Wall said of the distance factor. “Everyone wants to play at home, and that’s why I kept them [NC State] on my list. It’s a great school. If your mom’s not healthy you don’t want to go so far away that you have to fly to see her.”

    Pulley leans back on the couch in the den of their two-story townhouse and smiles at the thought of her son running out of the tunnel at the RBC Center decked out in Wolfpack paraphernalia. She grew up a Wolfpack fan and had a particular admiration for former NC State forward Rodney Monroe.

    “Yeah that was my man right there,” Pulley said. “[In North Carolina] you either like Duke or Carolina, but I just always liked State. That doesn’t matter though, because I told John that he’s going where he wants to go. He’s not staying just to be close to me. That’s not happening.”

    we still may not have a chance, really, with him, he is still saying Memphis and Kansas are leading but that’s only because, according to him, “they’ve made official in-home visits.”

    congrats to the volleyball team again…

    i just saw an ESPN where they are saying that Scott Wood is one of the best shooters in this class and could become and ESPN top 100 player by the end of the season…this may be a ridiculous class already even if we don’t get Favors or Wall.

    Derrick Rose was one and done and he sure helped Memphis

    It was a every convincing win. Enjoyed it alot. It was great when the crowd stood making noise wanting that last point seeming to cause that server to put the ball in the net. It was a good turnout and impressive win.

    I went with my 3 month old son, so this was his first big win as a State fan (though he slept through the last two games). Wish it was a football or basketball game, but breaking the losing streak is good enough for now.

    The team looked really solid last night. I was impressed with the crowd which was reported as 583 by http://www.gopack.com .

    Another chance to win a match Sunday at Maryland.

    To be honest, I was kind of surprised Lee Fowler wasn’t there for this match.

    Gotta love that for those girls after suffering 56 consecutive losses!!!

    I don’t know who they schedule and I’m speaking about an NC State sports program that I know nothing about, but c’mon, when has that ever stopped me? Anyway, this is kind of a nice thing for those kids, and very sad statement, all in one. There is almost surely no excuse for that group of young girls, who attend a MAJOR university, in a MAJOR conference, to have suffered through a losing streak of that duration.

    This is a special day for them, I just hope that Lee and Oblinger aren’t too giddy over this one win.

    To anybody who feels the need to comment negatively about a #1 point guard, or any other top recruit, at any other position, and in any sport, who is expressing even a remote interest in attending NC State University, PLEASE feel free to keep your thoughts to yourself.

    Congrats to the ladies! They have stuck with it through some lean years. Great to see a team trending UP in wins! After improving in competitiveness in Coach Stubbs’ second year, the wins are coming this year. Already more wins than the first two years combined. Just how bare was the cupboard? Looks like Coach Stubbs know how to restock the cupboard and coach them, too…

    Feel good story of the year so far! Btw, was this accomplished with coaching and hard work, but NOT a facility upgrade???
