NCSU ends BS of ECU in BCS w/ W in OT

Pack wins in OT by a score of 30-24.

Joe Giglio of the N&O’s ACCNow did a masterful job of gradually adjusting his entries during the game to be the first with a comprehensive blog entry that can be seen here.

Andre Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run in overtime capped the Wolfpack’s comeback and charged life into a program in need of hope after a poor start to the season.

We echo Noah’s comments from below:

Fantastic win. Great game plan, great adjustments by the staff and great execution by the few players left. They kept us in it and kept us in it and in the end, we made fewer mistakes than they did.

No coaching staff is perfect, but today is a great example of the best of O’Brien and his crew. Manage the game, string it out and be in it at the end. It’s not always spectacular, but I will take it all day long.

* Tom O’Brien is now 2-0 vs ECU and Skip Holtz.

* NC State is now 16-10 all-time against East Carolina and has won 3 of the last 4 meetings between the two programs.

* TOB is a combined 3-0 vs ECU and UNC.

* We hope that Chancellor Oblinger and the Board of Trustees have forced Lee Fowler to exit the comfort of his air conditioned luxury suite and be among the masses of fans so that he will have to experience the kind of language and abusive behavior from pissed off ECU fans that the rest of the Wolfpack faithful is having to handle on the walk back to their cars. Since he is the one who wants to play this game so much he should be forced to experience it like the rest of us.

* Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson!

* We blogged about how well the offensive line played in the entries just before this one. But, we must take a moment to also personally mention the incredible play of George Bryan.

* Coach O’Brien is putting together quite a record of memories in big games at Carter-Finley against rival programs. Last year’s win over UNC-CH and this year’s against ECU are definitely two of the most exciting games played in Carter-Finley’s history.

More to come!!

As I’ve been saying, I didn’t care whether ECU had played better than South Carolina and Clemson. The key is that ECU is NOT significantly faster AND bigger than NC State. This allowed the Pack to compete at the line of scrimmage, and thus give players a fighting chance to make plays. The plays got made, and the Pack won.

I think Russell Wilson might be an even smarter QB than Philip Rivers. His field and pocket awareness are outstanding.

I am listening to Holtz’s post game interview. Very classy.

SFN: I REALLY LIKE SKIP HOLTZ! I just hope he doesn’t end up at Clemson.

Ugh I hope not too. He could actually turn them into a good team. But then again he seems to have a problem beating the Pack.

Shear guts and determination pulled out that win. Congratulations to all the players and coaches! This will give us something to build on as we move forward. It’s the first time in a long time that we gave ourselves a chance to win. I don’t know what I’m feeling right now but it sure feels good. It’s a good day to be a Wolfpacker – how often have we been able to say that. Thanks TOB.

Holtz is a classy guy. Some big time school ought to hire him. He deserves that.

    Great win. Exciting game.
I hope Irving is not hurt too bad as he is a key to our defense.
This is Wilson’s team at this point. It looked like it clicked this game. I hope he continues growing at this rate.

I am sure the ECU fans are in a new world of ticked off.

Way to go Pack! In my opinion, one of the main keys to this game was when RW threw it away late in the game. He did not try to force it into coverage. Threw it into the 3rd row, and we kept the ball. THAT is quarterbacking ladies and gentlemen.

Great game! O’Brien I’m sure will look at missed tackles and other details but things are looking good with our beloved Wolfpatchwork.

I kind of think we will continue to see Beck quite a bit. There is no doubting that RW played incredibly well today but with the way injuries have gone this year, we need insurance at Quarterback.

Nobody is happier about that win than status quOblinger and LF.

Wait, let me rephrase that. We all know they’re happy with the ticket sales, but are they really capable of feeling happy about the outcome of an athletic event? Those two are simply relieved that this WIN will halt the momentum that Tudor may have started with his column.

Great win. Russell played like a champ. It looks like the other players have faith in him to lead this team, and he can make plays. Today looked like his coming out party. I’m just worried that we’re not going to have any healthy players left to play by season’s end. When will the injury bug ever end for NC State teams?

Great win for the Pack! Great to watch all the hooligans in dumb disbelief on the way out, too! They lose with even less class than they win with.

If Beck had not played in the first half, it would have been more decisive. State outplayed them pretty much every step of the way, minus a couple of horrid missed tackle parades.

RW is THE QB, he makes good decisions and creates plays where the other QBs cannot. Hopefully all of those who felt Beck was the better QB were watching closely. Andre Brown is proving to be a great leader, to hell with a FG coach, lets get this six and get up out of here!

No BCS Bowl, no ranking, no tearing up our 1st class stadium. Grab your coolers and get the hell back to the woods.

The good news is this is just the beginning, they will continue to improve week to week and RW will continue to grow. Eugene was indeed a lift (the personal foul was a bad call BTW, the ECU guy twisting his leg well after the play should have gotten a flag as well). Hope Nate isn’t out for a long time, but Hicks played decently in his stead. McKeen with a HUGE play, and only one bad special teams play and we lucked out of that one. If Hill can come back we will have two passing targets at TE, Bryan is the real deal.

Speaking of stadiums — did you see this?

The unc game is not even being shown in my area, gotta love that! But listening to the ESPN crews you’d think that unc must be stomping VT.

After a field goal just seconds ago, it’s…

    unc 3
    VT 0

    WTF???!!!

  15. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 3:22 PM #

Gannon is calling the VT/UNC game. Let’s hope for good mojo. Tech driving, 4th and 1 at UNC 34.

Congratulations to Wilson… now we know what the coaching staff sees in him. If he continues to improve, I could see Glennon getting 2 years on the sideline as Wilson will probably ultimately elect to go to the MLB.

Nice link BoKnows – Keenan is significantly older the C-F.
The tar babies aren’t looking very good on offense to start.

    WAY TO GO PACK –
real impressed with the way RW stay cooled – its like he can feel the pressure and it just doesn’t phase him.

Missed the first half – at the mall, don’t ask – maybe though I need to come in during the second half for every game!

Big shout out to the defense – they really stepped it up at the end of the 4th and the overtime. I didn’t think we could hold Sleez-E-U at all and darn if they didn’t prove me.

I had a crappy friday (our Board of Trustees – luxury boxes – dumb idiots running Athletics) so this is just AWESOME.

I think I’ll pop open something cool, bubbly and alcoholic.

Russel Wilson was very impressive today. He not only throws the ball well, but he also knows when to throw the ball away and when to tuck the ball and run. He understands that protecting and keeping the ball is priority number one. He is a smart young man who has gained the respect of his teammates, coaches and fans. He has tremendous potential as he gains more experience. Please stay healthy RW!

Great game! (helps that it was a Pack victory 🙂 )

“Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson!”

^That says a lot right there, a great game manager already (very impressive for a frosh)… Huge credit has to go to everybody though – Defense in particular … OLine was solid, and our receivers started to step up a bit today … Eugene – great to have this guy back and the penalty was BS … Great efforts from Andre today as well … Huge win considering our injury situation … Well done Pack!

    Now, LET’S GO HOKIES!!!

Skip after TOB retires? Doubt he’d last that long though.

ECU fans that I saw were sick, they actually looked sick, not angry. I thought they showed wonderful sportsmanship. I didn’t hear a damn thing out of them after the game. They were as polite and humble as can be. (Sarcasm alert)
Noah, that fumble wasn’t an ECU mistake, we caused a turn over. I know you know that, I just want to be sure the defense gots credit for it, not ECU getting credit for “making a mistake.” Passing into double coverage or going to the well once too often, like Pinky did when DaAndre nearly had a picksix near the end. Those are mistakes IMO. Great defensive plays are forced turnovers, again IMNSHO.

Forgot to give credit to Cjakowski (sp?) – I am terrified when he is kicking but he really came through today … Good job 🙂
