Lowe Lands Another ’10 Prospect (Projected Roster Update)
ACCBasketballRecruiting.com – along with everybody else – is that point guard Ryan Harrow has committed to NC State joining consensus Top 20 high school star, CJ Leslie in the class of 2010. (Link here).
Harrow – a rising junior from Marietta, Georgia – is a little shorter than his listing of 6’0 and weighs only 150 pounds. As ‘seeinred09′ stated on an NC State message board, “Let the record show that Chris Paul was 5’10” and around 150 lbs as a high school sophomore.”
Harrow plays AAU basketball for the Louis Williams Elite 16s and is reportedly close to Lorenzo Brown, a top 20 wing prospect in the class of 2009 who has reportedly narrowed his list to NC State and Memphis.
The University of Florida’s Rivals.com site recently had the following report on Harrow that was shared on Pack Pride’s free message boards:
There may not have been a guard in the entire tournament field that was faster and more slippery than the 5-foot-10 guard from Walton High School in Marietta, Ga. Harrow was a blur with the ball in his hands and because of his size and speed, he was able to sneak into small cracks in the defense.
His frame is tiny but his game was big. Harrow’s ball-handling skills and overall basketball are tremendous for a 2010 prospect. He’ll have to continue to fill out, but his game was one of the best of any point guard in the tournament.
It appears that Harrow couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the recent developments in his recruitment. The Wolfpacker ran this story highlighting Harrow’s spark with NC State on Sunday.
The North Carolina State elite camp experience left such an impression on rising junior point guard Ryan Harrow, he couldn’t wait to come back to Raleigh with his mother.
Harrow, who played three games with Louis Williams Elite 17s on Saturday in Norcross, Ga., is flying to Raleigh today, arriving around 9:30 a.m., where he will meet his mother, Fern Harrow, and his brother-in-law, Erasto Hatchett, who is an assistant coach at the Concord (N.C.) Cannon School, his former school. Harrow transferred back home to Marietta (Ga.) Walton High last January.
NC State coach Sidney Lowe will be meeting today with rising junior point guard Ryan Harrow, and his mother and brother-in-law.
“My mom wanted to meet [NCSU] coach Sidney Lowe about my scholarship and me committing early,” Harrow said.Harrow attended the elite camp for two days, June 11-12, yet the experience could alter his life.
One question on the minds of many Wolfpackers will be, “How does this impact NC State’s recruitment of John Wall in the class of 2009.”
Personally, I do not think that Harrow would impact Wall in any way. If Wall (were to commit to NC State and) is a one-and-doner as many predict then Harrow simply replaces Wall’s scholarship. The best case scenario would be if Wall stays at least two years; giving Harrow at least a year of growth and development and competion in practice vs Wall (and Javi Gonzalez and Farnold Degand).

At this point Wall is not a one and done. He has to improve his jump shot and his inability to drive left.
I do not care how small you are if you are that fast. IMO speed is more important than size in basketball
^10-4 Rick. Especially at PG. Straight line speed is not even the critical factor as much as the cutting ability and lateral quickness. SO what if a guy 4 inches taller runs as fast as you on a fast break, stop on a dime or crossover and he runs right by.
No impact on John Wall whatsoever.
1) John Wall is looking at elite programs.
2) As far as I can tell, it still appears that Wall intends to be at college a brief time. While he may stay longer – like Lawson – he seems to have his eye on the next level.
finally – these 2 may be able to play together.
This is a big get for Lowe. His 2009 class hasn’t come together yet. It could be a boom or bust. The committment from this PG and Leslie gives us a great start to a 2010 class.
Nobody seems to know much of anything about this guy. He’s not on Rivals’ Top 100 list. I pray to God he’s not another one of Towe’s random “projects.”
If Lowe’s 2009 class is a bust, not sure the 2010 class is even relevant.
What am I saying, this is NC State!
When Couch Lowe was talking about everyone to look out for the 2009 class during the Caravans, I started really paying attention to the possible recruits.
I’m very glad we got Harrow, and even happier he shows some enthusiasm for NCSU…..something we can always use large doses of. I believe it could hopefully help us with Brown, and it might fall along with what Brown was wanting by helping some of his AAU teammates get showcased a little.
Wall has a spot here no matter what we have done for 2010 and PG, and if he does play at State he could really get a large helping of hometown hero for many years to come. The reality is no matter if he should stay another year, he will probably have to consider a “one and done”…but for everyone’s sake if he does come here, 2 years would be rocking.
I don’t follow recruiting as closely as many on here, so I’ve got an admittedly ignorant question; When did it become the norm for high school players to commit BEFORE their junior year? On the face of it, it seems a bit absurd to me.
Realistically, we’re a good 4 years from probably seeing a true contribution from this kid – which is part of why recruiting doesn’t get me all jacked up to start with.
SFN: This practice has become much more common in recent years; the process starts earlier and earlier.
To be fair, the list of ignorant and irrelevant rationalizations that a lot of fans use as excuses for bad coaches is long and memorized by NC State fans by now.
But, the expanded recruiting cycle and need to be on recruits EARLY that is now so prevalant in college basketball is something that should NOT be overlooked by fans.
Need some bigs badly! Don’t think Wall is coming. Favors & Brown probably. Even with Favors, we atill need another
Can this kid shoot? we really need some outside shooting or we will continue to stink. and im not sure Scott Wood is the answer outside. i have a feeling someone needs to create for him to get an open look.
“Nobody seems to know much of anything about this guy. ”
I have not seen him play, supposedly he has just blown up. Before last summer no one had heard of Wall either.
Is there any news regarding Stern and the NCAA meeting on “two years out of HS”? I seem to remember there being all sorts of rumors swirling around about the time the final four was happening.
I had been stone asleep since half time of the Presbyterian game and that bit of gossip briefly woke me up to college basketball.
1. let’s join the Russians and identify talent by age 7.
2. forget #2. let’s Make/Clone talent like the Koreans do.
3. or we could build better facilities.
Echoing the sentiments on speed being important- another dimunitive (5’10″, 155 lb) PG comes to mind who had some success. Tyus Edney.
I don’t want to get too jacked up but Wall AND Favors would be just too good!!!
I was glancing over 2009 class at Rivals, and I don’t know how many big HS stars they’ll land, if any, but someone over in W-S is doing a pretty good job of getting WFU’s name mentioned anyway.
I want to beat the Demon Deacons, but still I’m kinda glad to see that after what they’ve been through.
john of sparta, that sounds kind of like a “John Boy and Billy” multiple choice. On the radio, or in Raleigh, number 3 is ALWAYS the answer.
“Nobody seems to know much of anything about this guy.”
Uh, this kid is in the tenth grade, I doubt even he knows too much about himself just yet.
Lowe and staff are displaying the same predilection toward Point Guards as Chuck Amato showed to the 6’2 195lb “athlete.”
The coaches appeared to have a pretty good look at him during the Wolfpack Elite Camp enough so they wanted to offer him early. I am OK with that given definite need and the likelihood that he would garnish more interest after visiting the shoe camps in the coming month.
I can handle a smallish guard (as a 10th grader) if he has speed and handles since that is a need on this team. Time is going to tell us if Lowe/Towe/Harris are great talent spotters so I will not really worry about that until I get more info to make a decision.
BTW…I will be moving to Marietta in the next couple of months so I plan to catch some of the Atlanta-area guys in action this winter (wearing some NC State apparel of course).
I would have probably said that they had a preference for, a liking, or maybe even that they’re predisposed to, but a “predilection” eh? Flexing the vocab muscles tonight are we?
redfred- at least he didn’t say a “predilection for procuring a plethora of puny point guards.”
That’s purty pucking phunny Dr B.
This is great news!
Am I the only who see’s this a very good sign for us landing Brown.
A commitment from Brown could really get the ’09 class rolling.
This kid will honor the process within his daytight compartment, all the while maintaining a high character quotient.
I think Brown is about 90%. If we could get two of the three –Favors, Kelly, and/or Wall, that would be a fantastic class.
Everybody seems to think we will land Brown. We can’t afford to have a second poor recruiting class in a row. Frankly, an average class won’t do for 2009, either. Sid needs a home run, or at minimum, a stand-up triple.
