Lets The Games Begin: Lloyd Carr To Retire

Three separate sources indicate that Carr has made his decision to retire official and people around the athletic department are being told. The formal announcement will come after the Ohio State game, possibly at the Monday press conference, possibly a day or two later.

LSU‘s Les Miles, a Michigan alum, will be the natural front runner to replace Carr and could trigger a domino effect felt around the country in a year where more BIG jobs are expected to be open than in recent memory.

In addition to Michigan (and potentially LSU), changes are all but certain to be made at Nebraska, Texas A&M and Arkansas. It is not beyond the realm of possibility to believe that Phil Fulmer at Tennessee &/or Karl Dorrall at UCLA could also be out of work at the end of the year.

With Auburn‘s Tommy Tuberville rumored to be on the list at A&M and UNC‘s Butch Davis and obvious fit at Arkansas, who knows where the dominos will ultimately extend?

Many Clemson fans will not be glad to hear this, but don’t expect Tommy Bowden to be fired even if the 8-2 Tigers lose out the rest of the way to BC, USC and in their bowl. Bowden’s buyout decreases from $2.5MM to $500,000 during the next year.

Speaking of Bowden’s, Terry Bowden has been approached about the SMU coaching job and has put the Mustangs on hold as he sniffs around other potential opportunities.

My sister is a UT grad and says the main talk there is about Terry Bowden. Ewwww.

This offseason is gonna be nuts, and its just starting to shape up. UCLA,Arkansas, and Tennessee might still open up and UM, Texas A&M, LSU, and Nebraska are certain to open up. The dominoes are gonna fall, and Davis will certainly get some calls.

Since a change was made, I’m glad we pulled the trigger last year and got TOB.

WOW…Butch is gone. There is no way that he won’t skip town to the SEC with the potential of 3 or 4 openings at LSU, Tennesee, Arkansas, and Auburn. On top of all that…Nebraska, Michigan, Texas A&M…sounds good now, but what if he leaves and the Tarholes do the smart thing and hire Skip Holtz?

Davis is gone at UNX. He wont come out and deny he is leaving, which is not a good sign for the incumbent school. Also, I heard from someone who knows someone who heard someone that Perdue (of chicken fame)is paying for the buyout of Davis’ contract at UNX, and even paying them back for what they paid him in salary this year, essentially giving them a free coach for this year.

How many tickets would nc state sell if they wind up in the Humanitarian bowl? i guess it doesn’t matter much if boise state is the opponent. surely they could sell out their own stadium for a bowl game. i actually wouldn’t mind seeing them play on the blue turf one bit, considering the 1-5 start. what i’d really like though is for BC to lose out and wind up there, just to put eagleinatlanta and his ilk in their place.

It will be interesting to see how much impact the coaching carousel has on NC State this year, if any. I certainly don’t think that TOB will be listening to any offers although he is an attractive candidate. I would also hope that the offensive staff that came here together will stick together for awhile. Those guys have done an incredible job this year and it would be great to have some continuity there for a few years. The only way I see one of them leaving would be a position coach leaving to be an OC somewhere else. I’m not as clear on the guys on the other side of the ball – I guess Archer could get a call for a mid-major head coaching gig or maybe a position coach could get a call as a coordinator somewhere.

I love our current coaching staff (when was the last time we could say that?) and I hope they all stay here for awhile. I think the loyalty that TOB values and helps to foster should really help us maintain some stability while other schools around the country will have at least some degree of upheaval and change during this offseason. We certainly know as well as any school how much ground can be lost when changing coordinators frequently.

The Music City bowl would have to still be a possibility for us. Potentially playing South Carolina, Mississippi St or even Auburn in Nashville on New Year’s Eve would be a great bowl to watch.

Yeah, I think Mandel is missing his own point.

If the Pack is eligible, they compare favorably to most of the teams we will be going up against. And we can pat ourselves as hardcore, traveling in great numbers, fans on the back for that one.

This year Clemson and VT, the two best draws from a bowl’s perspective, will compete for the BCS and Peach. BC will certainly draw the Gator, unless they lose out, because of Ryan. But UVA, losing 2 of 4 and not a historical traveling fanbase, would lose out to us or FSU. The Bowls get to choose in numerical order, not the standings. UVa would howl, but they will end up in Charlotte. Wake and GT will end up in San Francisco and Boise, however it works out, and FSU and State will end up in Nashville and Orlando. Wake’s problem is they are a small fanbase, GT’s is ambivalent and can’t even sell out at home. Plus Georgia is gonna wear that ass out on national TV. Maryland travels well, but they ain’t gonna make it with a tough FSU and redhot us left. I think Miami will have to steal one of the last two for the ACC to fill its tie-ins.

What I hope will happen is Ryan struggles and BC lose out, Florida embarasses FSU on national TV, and the Pack run the table in impressive fashion. In that scenario, we would be the most attractive team to Orlando. I expect we will win out and end up in Nashville, but you never know.

Actually, I have seen TOB’s name listed as a canidate on a couple of sites this morning. They list his strengths as what he left at BC and what he has done for us this year (i.e. turning around the start and this winning streak). No way he goes anywhere else, I truly believe he is here until her retires, but its nice (I guess) to see others acknowledge his performance. I wanted what those BC people think when they hear/read that….actually check that, I don’t care, we are very quickly catching them, and will pass them very, very soon.

I’d second that. Nashville is a nice town and that game scenerio you mention would be awesome in my book. And with the stadium right by all the night time attractions, New Year’s Eve would be a very fine time.

Tyson, not Perdue. Frank Perdue went to Salisbury State and funded their business school.

My bad Noah, you are right. Had my chickens crossed there, but still that is what I heard.

OBrien is not going anywhere – he said when he came here this was his last gig. He is 58 and this is the challenge he came for.

On the bowls, while we are attractive because we travel well, there are still limitations with who can pick who. I dont remember all the rules, but I know something like you cannot drop down more than two slots in the standings (choosing #5 insteaed of #3 is not allowed). They could choose 4 instead of 3. I think there are also rules discouraging return trips to the same place from year to year.

^ The rules are posted in the latest blog entry.

So there is a possibility we could end the 2007 season and start the 2008 season against the same school, USC?

I wonder if that has ever happened before.

  18. highstick 11/13/2007 at 10:39 PM #

Yep, Houston, but “that was basketball”!

Terry Bowden to Tennessee? Two Bowden’s in orange would be a bit much to take!

Mmmm … chicken and Salisbury steak … arrrrrggggllll …

OK, seriously, SFN’s “Favoritest Tarheel Without Ta-Ta’s” Bob Lee Swagger has written some interesting columns of late on the subject of Butch Davis as mercenary coach.
