Official: Temple Drops NC State, Will Play Mid. Tenn. How Much Did Temple Pay?

Temple has dropped NC State from their schedule. NC State will play host to Middle Tennessee on Nov. 19 and will have an open date on Sept. 10.

The article didn’t address if Temple paid NC State the $250,000 buyout as that, according to the media, was stipulated in the contract. IKB had to say, “I hate that it’s this late, but I understand people (Temple) doing what’s best for their student-athletes.”

What about what is best for the NC State football team? I have this feeling that for some reason we didn’t hold Temple’s feet to the fire, and make them pay the buyout. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Jeff – as I noted earlier, the contract language was so loose there was no way we would be able to collect our buyout unless we were completely unable to schedule a game (or maybe if we had to schedule a second 1-AA foe). We likely would have to sue over what is an “acceptable” opponent, and it would be a coin flip as to who would win.

On a separate note, kudos to the athletic department for not making MTSU a mandatory purchase for LTR holders. Many people already have plans for that weekend, while many others think they’ve paid enough for the annual LTR fee and season tickets, and will pass on paying more for a meaningless, late season cupcake game. It would have guaranteed more $$ if the purchase was mandatory, but I think the goodwill shown towards LTR holders is more valuable. I’m glad the athletic department agreed. It was an example of long-term strategic thinking (i.e., don’t irritate the donors who make program progress possible) over a short-term cash grab. This game still sucks, but I am less mad than I would be if forced to buy tickets to the game. Methinks I will probably stay home and watch meaningful college football on ESPN Gameplan (foregoing the MTSU purchase for my family of 5 LTR holders will more than pay for the entire season of the Gameplan package).

A side benefit – the athletic’s department’s decision will open up an opportunity for non-LTR folks to buy tickets without both buyer and seller having to make arrangements over the internet, etc. Those who claim to be “true” fans who would pay to see NC State play regardless of date or opponent? Here’s your chance!

BJD…that wasn’t me. That was a site admin. I love your comments about the “true fans” that can’t seem to find the money to pay to see the Pack while always criticizing the people that do.

I don’t care how loose the language was in the contract. We should do everything in our power to hold them to it. Even resort to legal alternatives regardless of the strength of the case.

They should GIVE the game tickets to LTR holders. A half-full C-F is going to be very unimpressive to the bowl folks.
