Remember the (Detroit) Titans (now w/Live-Blog)

Saturday Night at 6pm (ESPN3.com) the beloved Wolfpack will host the Detroit Titans in Historic Reynolds Coliseum. Detroit (#160, 5-5) lost 4 starters from last year’s squad that went 20-13, finished 2nd in the Horizon League, and went to the NIT. They have a lot of new faces (2 Transfers, 1 JUCO, and 3 freshmen) and are still feeling out their roles, just as the Pack is. The focus of the team is all everything small forward Juwan Howard, Jr. , son of Michigan’s Fab Five Juwan Howard, more about him later.

Detroit isn’t pushing the tempo as much as last year, and that may be a result of having so many new faces but they are still faster than the Pack is currently, which is likely a combination of our new faces and the slow poke teams we’ve played so far. The Titans also aren’t shooting the ball very well this year, especially compared to last year. They haven’t been good inside or outside the arc but they are one of the best at the charity stripe (offense and defense), which doesn’t bode well for the Pack since we are struggling at the line and teams are shooting FT’s lights out against us. It doesn’t matter who from Detroit we send to the line they all shoot the ball over 84% from the FT except Brundidge (63%) and Njoku who is an abysmal 25%.

Fun Fact: Detroit is 39-3 when scoring 80 or more points during Coach McCallum’s 6 years there. So expect to see a much faster paced game than what we’ve been seeing lately.

A quick look at the Pack this year:

As we all know the Pack isn’t shooting very well behind the arc but in actuality we are horrible. What is our saving grace is we’re one of the best in the country inside the arc. The Pack is great in 3 of the 4 factors, struggling at getting to the FT line hurts but since we’re struggling at the line anyway maybe that’s a glass half full thing. Defensively the Pack is effective at both inside and outside the arc, which is a pleasant surprise from previous years under Gott and Sid but for goodness sake can we please step up our FT defense?? Teams are shooting a blistering 81.1% from the line against us. THAT’S UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

Likely Starters:

#2 Juwan Howard Jr. (6-6, 210, JR) Forward – Juwan started his career at Western Michigan before transferring to Detroit after his freshmen year and it was a smart decision for him. Howard is the only returning starter from last year’s squad and has increased his role on the team as such. He’s gone from a role player to the Titans go to guy (sound eerily familiar?) by increasing his possessions from 18% to 28% and the percent of the teams shots from 18% to 32%. Howard is Detroit’s version of T.J. Warren, just not as effective with the ball as Buckets who has a +25 ORating over Jr. Howard also takes way too many three’s for a guy shooting just 27% from three-point land.
#23 Carlton Brundidge (6-3, 202, SO) Guard – Brundidge came to Detroit via Michigan as well, transferring after his freshmen season. Brundidge doesn’t excel at anything but is decent at everything.
#11 Jarod Williams (6-2, 168, FR) Guard – Williams is good at finding his man for the assist but as most freshmen he struggles with turnovers. Still Jarod has a solid 113 ORating while taking 18% of the team’s possessions and a 50% eFG percentage.
#33 Evan Bruinsma (6-8, 214, SR) Forward – Bruinsma has increased his role on the team from 14% to 19.4% of the team’s possessions but the increase has not hurt is ORating of +110. He’s not shooting the 2 or 3 anywhere close to last year but he’s increased his FT% (plus he’s doubled his trips to the line compared to his shots) as well as increasing his rebounding and decreasing his TO%. He will be a dangerous player is he finds his shooting touch from his previous 3 years.
#15 Ugochukwu Njoku (6-10, 220, SR) Center – Njoku may only play half the game and take only 13.6% of the team’s possessions but he makes his presence known when he’s on the court. He’s the team’s main rebounder (followed closely by Onwenu) and is a shot blocker at 10%. Just for reference Vandwagon is 12.4% and Anya is 11%. He’s solid around the basket at 50% but atrocious at the FT line (25%). Hint: Foul Him.

Bench Players:
#5 Matthew Grant (6-1, 165, FR), #4 Patrick Onwenu (6-8, 210, JR), #1 Anton Wilson (6-5, 191, SO), #21 Jermaine Lippert (6-8, 230, SR)

Grant and Onwenu will likely be the first 2 off the bench, while Lippert will play sparingly. Grant plays about half the game but is doing very well with his time on the court and is contributing quite a bit to the team with an ORating of 117 and 20% of the team’s possessions. He’s able to get to the FT line and capitalizes while there, has a good assist rate and low TO rate. Keep an eye on this kid Saturday. Onwenu is a JUCO transfer and is taking about 22% of the team’s possessions but isn’t nearly as effective with the ball as Grant is, sporting a 90.8 ORating. Onwenu excels at rebounding on both ends of the court but has a 38% eFG percentage.

This should be an interesting game, again another close game throughout. Could be the same as LBSU where we might get a small-moderate lead but can never shake them. At least this shouldn’t be a game where Detroit is constantly trying to slow this down to a crawl but looking to push the tempo which could play right into our hands. KenPom likes us to win by 10 and I agree.

“‘Why do you guys continue to refer to the fine mercenaries in stripes as ACC officials?

^I think it may mostly be ignorance (no disrespect intended, of course).

I call them ‘ACC’ refs because they’re the same cast of characters, but of course they do B1G and other games. IMO, ‘they’ (the magic ‘they’) need to regulate schedules for these guys a lot better. I understand that they’re able to go for as many games as they can get, but these are middle-aged or older guys traveling everyday doing an insane amount of games. That’s going to impact anyone in a negative way at some point.

As for the game, I should’ve mentioned that I’m happy for Turner and Washington … Washington gave great unsung minutes and calmly knocked down two crucial free throws under a minute to play.

hpack not sure what you are referring to Cat played 32 minutes and had 22 points against NCCU in arguably his best game

GoPACK – Agree. As I recall TL (39 mins) was still mostly running the point with both playing together in the 1st half. Cat played point of the 2H down the stretch, sparked the comeback and, earned the starting job. TL played 10 in the next game FGCU

Good win; it shows some resilience (and willingness to win despite officials making sure to let the other team gets a solid advantage–Detroit was in the bonus before the 10:00 minute mark in the second half). I hope Turner can use this to catapult his offense, as he had a solid streak in the 2nd half. He is our only hope of scoring against a zone, which we will continue to see the rest of the season.

If you notice officiating the chances are good the refs did a piss poor job. I noticed. Almost cost us another game.

Mark is making a mistake by not playing and developing Anya. He’s been more than serviceable during his time in games and does that blockhead really think we will get through the ACC without our rotation of bigs not in foul trouble?!! Why not get Anya some PT now before the duke and UNX games when half our starters have 3 first half fouls???

Comments….LATE…but after I got home from the game, I had to resolve some issues with all the SMARTASS new electronic devices that I have purchase (TV SmarTV, Blu-Ray Smart; Wii-U….and now even a simple Garmin Nuvi…) If the device detects your router and hooks up with the wireless and wants your password….it is smarter than you and there will be trouble….

Anyway….sorry for the rant…but I needed to chill out.

Ray Natilli (Sp) was one of the three stooge team that kicked out Corch and Googs. We have had him TWICE in a row…or maybe game before last. He is living up to Karl’s tutelage….

Game was a really mixed bag. Part of it was downright UGLY…but there were some moments.

Cat was REALLY off tonight. Looked like he studied his stats and violated his own Post Game Presser a few games ago. He tried to KIDNAP the game instead of “Lettin it come to me….”. He sounded very mature in the interview but looked like CJ did when he decided to take over. He was well schooled by Whitt….Never pass off to a teammate that is open when you can throw up a prayer. He got into Foul issues….had 3, with a couple of minutes to go. Tyler played pretty solid. His numbers were 3 Fouls; 6 points; 7 assists; 3 rebounds and only 2 Turnover. Desmond Lee had 5 of the 17 TO’s and only 9 points…

The STAR, also the POTG, was Ralston Turner. He saved our fanny. He was hitting and they would double up on him…then Coach would put Buckets back in and they had to adjust. Turner had 21 points in 22 minutes…no TO, RB or A…but he SCORED….and that made up for some of the bricks we were heaving.

We shot OK….From the stands, it seemed that we could not hit much in the second half…but our FG % was 57% and in the low 40’s in the first half.

We had a GREAT lead….and then it just seemed to disappear. The ref’s made a LOT of controversial calls….and you guys that saw replays or listened to the radio will have to chime in.

Cat, as one astute poster pointed out….played like a TRUE freshman. It seems to take Tyler a few minutes to get in the flow, but he does a great job.

Vandy LOOKED awesome….but then again, looked like BJ. He was out of position for many of the bricks we put up. BUT, his reflexes are getting better. The reverse dunk or slam brought the house down. He did it on the end we were on and our seats were about the baseline so we saw the profile.

Freeman was a terror on the boards….but he subbed for Vandy. Vandy DID play a LOT of first half minutes. His conditioning and stamina look great….

Was it the shorter practices during finals? Did we jump out in front (I think we were up by almost 17 points at one time) and then figure….WE’RE COOL….SLACK OFF?
Did Motor City figure out WHAT to do? Did Juwan Howard take over…YES…to a certain extent….?

The vile purple pirates are ARRRRGGGGHHHHHH comin next week…..

HATS OFF TO RedCanine…..that Eagles parody was COOL….that lad deserves an ATTABOY….I am STILL Laughin’

Good Night said the night man….you can check out anytime you want….but you never can leave this place….

If we don’t learn how to box out and rebound it will be a long year.

This evening, when barber was in the team didn’t do a good job or he didn’t do a good job of finding him to start the break.this got better when lewis came in, then we stopped rebounding. In the last 5 minutes we didn’t do a good job from the line. I thought both Washington and vandy looked good tonight….but again, our team refuses to box out and our coaching staff obviously doesn’t care.

Nice slam except that he carried the ball 2 or 3 times before he got to the rim, practically And1 Mix Tape quality. Surely KH and crew will keep an eye on that tendency.

“Tyler played pretty solid. His numbers were 3 Fouls; 6 points; 7 assists; 3 rebounds and only 2 Turnover.”

I watched this game, and I’m surprised his line doesn’t look worse. One thing not mentioned here is that he was 1/5 from the floor and 3/5 from the free throw line. In addition to that, none of these numbers reflect his defense, and my impression from watching the game was that his man took advantage of him a few times.

For the season, Tyler’s Roland Rating is pretty bad. It has been negative for every game but one (Campbell). That shows that the team is playing better when he isn’t on the court.

I’m hopeful he will break out of his shooting slump while continuing to generate assists while minimizing turnovers. That still leaves the issue of how well he can guard opposing guards, but that will always be an issue given that almost everyone he faces will always be taller and quicker.

What does everyone think about Tyler’s play this season and his prospects going forward?
