I was also there for the original Pirate Riot. It was legitimately frightening.

When somebody comes over for a dinner party and shits on your living room carpet…most people wouldn’t invite said guest back over, whether they paid for the damages or not. And this particular guest did it TWICE.

  2. Wulfpack 11/25/2013 at 12:25 PM #

I have no interest in watching us play the pie rats, win or lose. It offers nothing but their fans the chance to crap in our living room.

BJD: I’m all for playing Purdue, Mississippi State, Iowa State, K-State, Boise State, Fresno State, Cal, Oregon State, Northwestern, etc.. That should be our “top line” non-conference game.

Frankly though, we have to play 3 other games (and I think 12 game schedules are ridiculous, but that is another discussion). Play those against teams like ECU, App, etc..

The games are interesting because the stadiums are full. They’re interesting to our fans if we think we can win. We just need to stink less, not run scared.

These games are also valuable to us if we win. We keep lesser programs down by beating them on the field.

Playing ECU in any revenue sport is good for them and bad for us. We win no big deal. Recruiting it helps them hurts us. Last time they had to pass a law to make us play them. Hopefully DY will step up and put a stop to it.

85Designo: War where people die is similar college sports? Really?

If you feel that way, we’ve got a fundamental difference of opinion about the value of sports and the outcomes. I’m not sure that we’re going to get anywhere with further conversation.

I clearly remember the two games where the ECU fans trashed our stadium. That’s crowd control, drunkenness (see my above points about tailgating), and then holding ECU as a school accountable afterwards. Shrugs.

  6. 85Designo 11/25/2013 at 1:17 PM #

Ryebread: now you are just fooling with my play on words. Don’t be so damn serious, of course it is not real war. How many times of you heard sports analogies refer to warriors, battlefield etc. Now my point: of the purples who damaged the field only a small percentage were intoxicated, it was a bandwagon riot plain and simple. Those bastards couldn’t get us to play on their turf so they treated ours as their home game. If they beat us in Greenville they would have trashed their own field, just the way they are…..no class. Purple-headed step children is all. I just have no respect for their program whether they are ligit or not ( it just means too much to them to beat us as; it does to us to beat the heels) Just not worth the aggravation. I don’t appreciate your cut questioning my appreciation for our brave servicemen and women. Lighten up!

I’m with Ryebread. Play them, beat them. Beat them down. Don’t run from them. Beef up crowd control if need be. Bill ECU for the extra costs.

This comment from Rye speaks volumes “If we can’t beat them, then are they really a lesser program? I’d argue not. I suspect that’s why ECU fans dislike NC State and the ACC schools so much. I tend to agree with them.” Blaming ECU’s obnoxious crowd is a cop-out.

@85 – all due respect, when you replied to Ryebread’s “this isn’t war” comment with “IT IS WAR!” twice, in all caps, mention blood spilling, etc. your post looked pretty serious…

  8. ryebread 11/25/2013 at 3:44 PM #

85Designo: To Mr. Plywood’s point, your post seemed to suggest you did see a collegiate sporting event as a war. I’m glad that you don’t. “By gones” from my perspective.

My point is the same though. Play ECU, beat them, and move on. They only do stupid things because we refuse to play them and because we look down at them. If we are indeed the superior program (and I personally think we should be), then we’ll beat them 75% of the time on the field and the whole point will be moot anyways.

The athletic’s department is running a business. TV, ticket sales, concessions, bowl revenues and alumni giving are the sources of revenue. I would contend that a game against ECU as one of our “mid-tier” OOC games is going to generate a lot more revenue than La Tech.

Give us a similar, middling BCS school, a game against ECU, a game against Charlotte and a game against App and I can guarantee you’re going to have a lot happier season ticket holders than we have with the current schedule.

Just because we sell out doesn’t mean that we maximized revenue off of the tickets. The department makes a lot more money off of season tickets and visitor tickets sold at face value than ones sold at fire sale for pennies on the dollar. The goal should be to have an attractive home slate with enticing games to attract more season ticket holders and full priced ticket sales. Playing games like ECU, App and Charlotte will do that.

Additionally, this type of scheduling model will help us both with in State recruiting, and also with our overall record. Beat those smaller programs and we’ll slowly but surely win more and more recruiting battles. Play more games close to home and we’ll follow the Ohio State model, where we’re never really all that far from our fans. These things tend to snowball, particularly for the larger, more established school.

Alumni giving is a no brainer. The kids need a practice field in order to ensure ECU never beats us again? The checkbooks will open in a second.

Finally, I contend the issue at hand isn’t that we play ECU. Had we won Saturday, BJD would still be complaining about playing the game (because I’ll give him that he’s been consistent on this point for years), but most would be just fine. We’d be seeing discussions like “yeah, those fans were really quiet when we pushed in for that last score” or “yeah, the place really cleared out when we were up 21 in the 2nd.”

The problem is that we lost, that we do care that we lost to ECU, and that we were frankly outclassed in doing so. The truth hurts, as does the ARRR billboard that rubs our faces in it.

Okay, I have mixed feelings about playing ECU. However, I’m going to the game Sat. against Maryland. I have two tickets. I’d like to take a Grandson with me. Does anyone have an extra ticket they would give away? Contact me at . Thanks!

  10. archdalepack 11/25/2013 at 6:11 PM #

Virginia wolf, I should have an extra ticket for you grandson. Do we break any rules if I give you my email?

  11. archdalepack 11/25/2013 at 6:24 PM #

Ryebread, FYI, Saben told students who left early this year during Arkansas game “I expect 60 minutes out of my players, if you can’t stay for whole game, give your tickets to someone who will”. Alabama does not give out passes at the half.

Guess it is wrong of me to expect State ticket holders to come to games or give/sell tickets to State fan!

Except for the FSU/ECU games, going into the 4th quarter we were within a TD or less in every other game. Just have to learn how to finish.

The lack of quality depth is what leads to that.

A TN fan & a Bama fan were awaiting execution in a Tennessee prison. On the day they were to meet their Maker the Warden asked for their last requests. The TN fan said, “I wanna hear Rocky Top one last time!”

The Warden says “OK” then looks to the AL fan & says “You too can have one final request; what will it be?”

The Bama fan looked at the Warden and said: “Kill me first!”

Obviously this thread is getting a bit shopworn….and I apologize for contributing to it’s demise.

    Bill…..That was funny….

Others….I think it would be GREAT to play ECU….many times a year.

BUT….lets put it to a vote. Only the persons purchasing Season Tickets (LTRs or just plain loyalty) or the ones that will COMMITT to purchase a single to the ECU game gets a vote….

Johnny Swofford has talked about using WiFi in the ACC Stadiums to “improve” the fan experience and compete with the “Home Theater” fan decline…

For me, who does give the WPC my CC#, I do NOT want to play ECU….that would be like going to a mall in downtown Detroit…

I am NOT paranoid. I rarely have a drink when we tailgate. I am NOT a prude but getting drunk (stoned) out of your mind to show your loyalty for your team is a bit of a puzzle.

I also understand that we have a few folks that wear red, certainly not any of the fine and upstanding posters here, that subscribe to that philosophy.

We need a poll and only the ones (Likely Purchasers in the Political Venacular) can vote.

Archdalepack, I’m not sure if we broke rules or not. My email is . Let me know today, so I can get the ticket before the game. Thanks!

Virginia Wolf, I can be reached at [email protected]. See you at game!

archdale: Good for Saban. They also sell out every game at 90k+, have a waiting list for people who want to be there but can’t get tickets and have won the title 3 out of the last 4 years. Not exactly apples to oranges there.

When NC State is putting the product on the field that matches Alabama’s, then things will be different. We’ve got a long ways to go.

DD made a similar request (and you allude to this with the pass outs comment) and it caused an uproar amongst a certain vocal group within the fan base. I can’t help but find the Saban reference ironic given that we can’t even get our paying customers interested enough in a game to stay there as opposed to going back to the tailgate. For the record, I’m against pass outs. I cannot ignore the irony of some that I’ve seen griping about the fans selling/giving tickets to ECU people also being some who are quite vocal about keeping pass outs. We can’t have it both ways.

If you’re paying attention, you’ve seen a lot of articles in the last couple of years about lagging student attendance. Even in the might SEC, there are consistent reports of empty student areas. Even at big time football schools, people aren’t showing up to watch blow outs of patsies. That’s my point about tickets. If we want to sell them for the most possible money, we need to have compelling opponents. Games like ECU help sell the package at face value so they’re good for business.

adventuroo: That’s kind of a country club view. Once you’ve paid your dues and gotten in, then you’re the only vote that matters. While there’s clearly some correlation between keeping the LTR members and the big donors that can’t be ignored, it’s not everything. I’d argue there’s far more to scheduling than that and that the AD and coach have to schedule with the long term interest of the program in mind. I hope our coach and AD are smart enough to realize this. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fowler weren’t.

I agree that playing ECU has no advantages and plenty of disadvantage. My old high school had the same situation years ago. A nearby county school (we were a city school)never played because of different conferences and classification always ran off at the mouth that we were afraid to play them. Well finally circumstances forced us to play them in the same conference for several years and we beat the crap out of them every time we played. Well that shut them up but it brought out the “well you were supposed to beat them crowd”. Same situation here with ECU but I will say if we stopped playing them now it would indeed look like sour grapes.

  19. Tuffy2 11/26/2013 at 5:24 PM #

The statement of we have nothing to gain and everything to lose when we play ecu is a thing of the past. We now have everything to gain and lose when we play them.

I say this with a heavy heart. I hope I am only talking about football.

There are a lot of reasons to continue playing the pierats and it helps us recruit in NC…if we beat them! There are more important things in life than tv revenue and LTRs, though our school does not believe so. I tried to get minipak tix for football but there were no good games tied to them, so I passed. All the indiv tix to “good” games were sold out, just didn’t know they were sold to our enemies, such as the butt pirates. I would have bought a minipak even if the only “rivalry” game was ECU. Embarrasingly enuff, I had to buy my tix through a piratesniffs club friend, to the tune of what it would’ve cost me for a freaking minipak!! I told the ticket office this was a curse, and payback was coming. Pictures of the stands at CFS this weekend…exhibit A!!!!!! Again, when you piss on the people who have been there with open wallet for 25yrs, it will come back to bite. And it did. Keep playing the EZU buttpiratesniffs…we just need a team that can beat them. All this talk about not playing them cause it is meaningless is silliness, there’s an honorable mention on any football teams schedule no matter what conf theyre playn in! When your as far from a bcs anything as we are at this point, why does it matter? Just play em for pride, bragging rites, and recruiting. I would have liked to have had their quarterback!!
