Lutz interested in vacant FGCU position?

Right when we were hoping the exodus had ceded and that we had switched to a net flow of talent coming INto the NC State Basketball program, we get this.

While FGCU’s vacancy two years ago produced countless qualified candidates, an impressive list of recognizable names and well-credentialed coaches already was waiting this time to hit the send button on job applications the moment Enfield’s departure was announced.

Former NBA players Eric Snow and Anthony Peeler, now college assistant coaches, and former NBA coach Eric Musselman, an Arizona State assistant and an FGCU candidate in 2011 as well, contacted Kavanagh last week, according to FGCU documents obtained through a public records request.

Other coaches with strong credentials contacting Kavanagh included associate head coaches Tim Buckley of Indiana, Bobby Lutz of N.C. State and Chris Jans of Wichita State.

“I’m sure you are getting bombarded,” Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing wrote in supporting fellow Missouri Valley Conference coach Jans, who shares the same connection with Kavanagh through his 13 years as Bradley athletic director before moving to FGCU in 2009.

    Bummer.

However, the guy at FGCU surely is forthright and forthcoming and does NOT play games.

I guess we shall see what we shall see….

I certainly hope that FGCU is willing to pay some big bucks. If I read the tea leaves correctly, Coach Lutz has not moved to Raleigh and commutes. He and his family still reside in Harrison whatever or where the 49er campus is.

He also has family committments as his mother has AZD and is in a secured care facility. Having gone through that, making a move to FL would have to really be the “right one”. If I were him, though, I would have had the email ready….you never know…

I would hate to see him go. Whatever Lutz’ personal situation, I’m not sure FGCU is a step up from where he is. Not to disparage FGCU, but they’ve been in Division I for only 2 years. They caught lightning in a bottle. Is this sustainable? With such a high bar set this year, the next coach coming in will be expected to maintain or exceed it.

Eric Snow is the perfect fit!

The town of residence is Harrisburg, on Highway 49 and near the speedway.

I don’t know if a move from NCSU assistant to FGCU head coach would be a step up or not, but if you’re asking me if I want to live in Mecklenburg County, Wake County or the Fort Myers area of Florida, that’s a no-brainer.

    Absolutely and positively.

Herb Sendek has just removed his name from consideration.

    +1, 13OT.
    how ’bout
    +44?

Eric Muscleman sounds like the obvious choice from an outsider…

LOL, PM. We love our Credit Union at SFN, but I would rather they leave Lutz where he is.

  9. BJD95 04/09/2013 at 9:31 PM #

Coach Andy didn’t even make $200K per year, remember.

    Random thoughts….

I hope this thing comes to a conclusion quickly. Based on how close he is to Tyler, I hope that he stays around o that Tyler stays moivated and we keep TL for three more years. That boy could turn ou to be as good as Towe and Lowe….and that is heady company.

Nothing to base this on, other than my speculations and reading the tea leaves.

Lutz reached out to FGCU, which is not surprising. There are a lot of asst. coaches that will take a pay cut to get a head coaching job. Usually the main thing they look at is can they win at that particular school. Local writer down there requested AD’s emails and Coach Lutz had sent his resume. I do not think Bobby is their first choice so time will tell.

Coach Lutz was at the baseball game tonight. He wasn’t wearing any FGCU apparel. I’ll take that as a good sign…

In all seriousness, I think he can get a much more high profile coaching job with his resume and I wish the best for him if such an opportunity presents itself. I don’t want to assume that FGCU caught lightning in a bottle this year, but they could easily fade off into the night. It does seem like an attractive job; however, given the recent success, location, etc.

My guess is that FGCU isn’t major enough to tempt WBS into following Lutz. At least not until he sees how his role evolves next season.

I am excited for a dual PG look and using Buckets as a strtch four.

Cheap rates on car loans is something they can offer to supplement whatever the cash compensation is. Hopefully that won’t be enough to lure Lutz.

It is no secret that Lutz is interested in a head coaching job. He said that openly during a recent radio interview.

But it also seems that Debbie is willing to lay out some cash to make staying here as attractive to him as possible.

I think we can have confidence that we’ll hire a great replacement when he does go, based on Debbie and Mark’s track record.

I like Lutz and I REALLY want him to stay. Having said that, no one expects good assistants to stay assistants long term. They all want to be head coaches, and everyone knows that.

Having an assistant coach occasionally leave to take a step up in the world is a GOOD thing. Too much turnover is bad, having people leave because they are unhappy is bad, but having people go because they got an opportunity to progress in their career is good.

    Please stay, Bobby!

Pretty sure we had Larry Farmer sitting next to Gott for a reason this season. He’s not the “scheming” defensively minded coach Lutz is-probably better suited to give Gott another offense coach so he is not the only voice on that front.

    What’s wrong with… ?

  19. tjfoose1 04/10/2013 at 11:15 AM #

High profile position? Has Lutz ever done anything to make you believe such a thing is a high priority to him? Some importance? Sure. HIGH priority? I don’t know.

FGCU. Less restrictions, less expectations, recent national exposure and made national name. They are now on the map and have a national profile (Monteith doesn’t quite grasp that concept, but that’s a whole ‘nother story). Go into a kid’s home and no longer does the coach have to explain FGCU to a recruit.

Fort Myers. Quality of life, no income taxes, and still within the ACC footprint (if that is important to him and he wants to keep that option open).

If Lutz leaves for a HC gig, I was hoping it’d be something bigger than FGCU.

I’d like NCSU to be a place, where assistants get recruited to take over major programs or at least programs in major conferences, like Collins getting tapped for Northwestern.

Given Lutz’s success at Charlotte, I’d hope he’d land somewhere bigger, so we can be “that program” other schools look to, to get good coaches.

    ^ Hope so.

  22. tdouble 04/10/2013 at 12:21 PM #

Lutz was 8 games over .500 his last 5 years in Charlotte. Not sure why people continue to say he was so successful.

  23. Wulfpack 04/10/2013 at 12:50 PM #

He was very good in Conference USA but it fell apart with the move to the A10. He is definitely looking for another chance somewhere.

I don’t know what to think..Since we got “invaded”, I don’t know who is credible and who is full of crap anymore except for a handful..
