Matt Dayes re-commits to the Pack

If seen some fans express the tiniest bit of frustration that they had been wishing that Coach Doeren and his new staff were making just slightly larger recruiting waves over the last month. They weren’t large ‘complaints’ per se, but just an acknowledgement that we weren’t burning up the recruiting trails quite as much as some had hoped.

Today, State took a big step towards solidifying our 2013 class when running back Matt Dayes recommitted to NC State and Coach Doeren’s staff. Dayes gained almost 1,900 yards and scored 31 touchdowns on 200 rushing attempts as a high school senior.

Dayes is a solid 3-star running back recruit from Weston, Florida who is generally considered to be a Top 50 player at his position. He has a it of a ‘bowling ball frame’ at about 5’10 and 210 pounds (think Toney Baker type). His offer list included Miami (FL), Arkansas, Kentucky, Boston College, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Tennessee.

VERY good get. This kid is a down-hill bowling ball & should be a great 1-2 punch with Thornton.

    Bring ’em in Coach D.

Doesn’t appear to have breakaway speed, looks like a good pickup though

Good pick up. I have no clue how doeren will recruit. He should be able to attract talent. The key will be keeping it and coaching it up.

Doren and several staff members are known for their recruiting.

That is the opposite reputation carried by our last coach and staff, 1 or 2 of which were considered decent recruiters. Like most attributes of an institution, tone starts at the top.

I’ll pass significant judgement until next year, and 2 years from now should be a true indications of their recruiting acumen.

Stateman, agreed on the top end speed. Does look like he has great vision though. Glad he is running with the Pack

You don’t need breakaway speed when it is 3rd and 2. You need a bowling ball who can bust through and get you the tough yardage.

Glad to see this young man is coming to Raleigh…especially over a program that’s just starting to get some attention as “on the rise…”

Anything we can do to bring in playable, D-1 talent this late in the game is a HUGE relief. I know we will be bad for awhile, just hope not so bad that it puts DD behind the 8 ball and he never really has a chance to show what he can do.

Has recruiting gotten so bad that a 3star recruit gets his own article on the main page??

And correct me if I’m wrong, but didnt we already have a solid freshman RB who started last year? Sounds like this guy wont step in Carter Finley for atleast 2years…

    We need DEFENSE.

  9. rdjennin 01/31/2013 at 7:41 AM #

So does this mean that DD is already 1-0 against James Franklin?

    RD , it does not

Yes, God forbid we should have more than one legitimate running back on the roster. Personally, I want to see our walkon white dudes from Broughton on the field in ACC play. I bet they have grit.

Agree with Pack Leader. Nice get but is this front page news?

Over the last decade we have beenable to lock up 5star running backs almost everyother year (TA, Hall, Brown, Baker,Barnes) with less that steller coaching staffs… How is this program changing news?

Dont get me wrong, nothing wrong with a 3star backup, but I dont see him shaking up any program anytime soon…

It’s called a slow news day/night people. Damn, people bitch about anything and everything.

Oh, and also lets just have 1 good RB on the roster. All the great teams bring in top quality RBs EVERY year, but not here at State. Lets just get a good 1 every 3 years or so, and then get crap players the other years.

Front page news to raise the topic of DD’s recruiting under extremely difficult circumstances. It’s a very relevant topic.

We need legitimate D-1 talent everywhere. Our personnel situation is not such that we can cherry pick to fill specific needs.

The only reason Old Testament played this year was the rash of injuries at RB. A RB takes a ton of hits and abuse, and being deep at RB is critical.

UGA recruited both Marshall and Gurley – why do they need 2 top RB’s? Oh yeah, depth. Still a crying shame neither of those two even gave us a chance. New staff, be positive and let them bring in the recruits.

Too bad this guy cant play WR… we are scary thin there

  18. StateFans 01/31/2013 at 10:34 AM #

Pack Leader, looks like we are in the running for a WR transfer from West Virginia. (Check the football forums for more).

The cynic in me says that we’re in a bad spot when a 3 star recruit is news.

The apologist in me says that it’s late in the season, so we can’t really judge anything from this year’s class.

The realist in me says that this year’s class was pretty much a wash either way. Had TOB stayed, there’s no evidence we’d have had a top 20 class. Whether it is ranked in the 30s or 40s isn’t all that much different because it’s still below the level of talent we need to really compete in the ACC (particularly after Louisville is added to our side).

The doom and gloomer in me fears that DD and staff may be behind the 8 ball talent wise before they ever get started.
