Orlando Early to join staff

Full link.

Early started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in 1993. He left in 1995 to start a three-year stint at Western Carolina. From 1998-2001 he was the coach at Charlotte under Bobby Lutz. During that time Early established a reputation as a good recruiter.

“When he was at Charlotte and Alabama he was kind of known as the top recruiter on the staff,” Cloninger noted. “When he was head coach at ULM, he did the same thing. He got some kids that normally would have gone out of state or maybe go to a Texas school to stick around and play for little old ULM and ended up winning the conference one year.”

Let’s not get all wound up over Harrick, the only reason he’s even being discussed is because some poster posed him as possibly a candidate.
We just spent three weeks frantic over the coaching hire and NOT A SINGLE POSTER OF THE THOUSANDS ON NUMEROUS SITES EVER EVEN IMAGINED GOTT. You think we’re any better at guessing assistant coaches? I doubt it.

Curiosity question: is there any news out of Word of God about Joseph Uchebo’s commitment? It seems like Tyler Lewis is still on board, but I haven’t seen any reaction from the Uchebo camp. I know he was recruited by Towe.

It would be nice to still have him in the fold if CJ Leslie decides to prematurely fly the coop.

Anyone think Orlando has shot at stealing away a Gamecock recruit? They have 2 4-star guys committed. I believe on hasn’t signed either. Would be pretty awesome.

    Go Pack.

“Towe is not “owed” is correct, but if we are as moral and ethical as we pretend to be when we bash the UNX’ers, then we will NOT “Phil Ford” Monte Towe. ”

This statement is beyond absurd. Did I miss Towe working for free or something? He got paid to coach. The success he and the staff had was unacceptable. We should tell him thanks and good luck at your next job.

    Rick,

I don’t know a lot about your career or experience. I, unfortunately, was involved in over 35 plant shutdowns and/or consolidations. When we evaluated people and how we would “transition”, we looked at their particular skills and experience and determined who would leave first and who would leave last. We did this at all levels; hourly, salary staff and management.

The ALL got severance. But we had to determine who was critical to getting the equipment moved, maintaining dual production capability, who was to travel and help train, who was to do the final “clean-up”, and who was the caretaker(s) until we had sold the building.

In some cases, we had recently purchased a company and knew very little about the folks….in other cases, it was an existing facility with a long history.

We would often retain some of the management and even the lower level salary folks and pay for their relocation. In some situations, we would integrate them into a similar department or we might put them in a new situation, but based on thier track record, we knew they would succeed. With some, we also circulated their personnel files to other operations in other divisions and they were picked up there.

Monte Towe has managerial and organizational skill sets that can be utilized in a variety of areas within the AD’s area, the Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club. He may also be qualified to teach in some of our “sports” oriented ciriculum.

I did NOT say that he needed to be retained for Mark’s staff. That is Mark’s call. But, I think that the University ought to look at every open position or see if we need to beef up some functions. His name recognition and personality go a long way in the fund raising and sports “PR” areas.

I will not make disparaging remarks about the “absurdity” comment….your lack of understanding of how to good management functions speaks volumes about that.

I would bet that if you are called in on a Friday afternoon and given the BAD NEWS, THEN you will certainly hope….as you explain the uncertainity to your family over the weekend…..that your relocation team or leader will treat you with the dignity that I suggested for Monte and that they will look at your skill sets and record and loyalty and make good decisions.

Hope you never are in that spot…..it is not pretty….I have many friends that were retained over the years and they have great careers and never fail to thank me for having a small part in allowing them a “second” chance as they had no control over closing their plant.

I did not suggest that we fire someone or create a job….but you always try to keep good people as they are your greatest asset.

” . . . but you always try to keep good people as they are your greatest asset.”

That is a byline for every good manager I’ve ever known.

Roo – I get the ‘good guy’ stuff and that MT would be a great guy to have as part of the organization. I don’t disagree. The same might be said for Sid, Levi and Harris.

Monte has been a coach for a long time. That is the profession he sought out. He enjoys coaching. He knows how this works. Coaches that are not successful are not retained. If he had the potential to be our head coach, he would have already been hired. He would have been considered 5 years ago, but he wasn’t. He’s had a 5 year chance to show the administration that he could step into the HC job, but he didn’t do it.

So you are suggesting that he do something else, take an administration job. Basically you are saying, “Monte, no more coaching for you but here’s something we think you might be good at. Put on this red jacket.”

As for me, I hope Monte gets another coaching gig somewhere. He and I were students at the same time, I remember his fire. I thought he did a pretty good job at UNO, he can definitely recruit, I think he could add something to another program. Monte’s a coach.

If he wants to retire and wear a red coat around campus all day, fine. But I say that’s giving up – go kick some butt Monte!

Bobby Lutz to State!! If we can get Dino, that what a hell of a coaching staff that would be!!

MG may turn out to be a good hire….but until the adminstration gets behind the programs and we have a good AD (maybe DY will be but her judgement at the introduction makes one question her business sense; her passion I cant question) we will continue to be second rate in BB to the rest of the conference. Ever since Jim Valvano the lack of adminstration support and strong AD has been the issue more than players and coaches. I for one would welcome a coach like JV who knew how to play the RPI (just go 8-8 in the conference and peak at Tournament time) and the emotion of college BB and makes a run at the end of the year. That is the “knock” on MG … I don’t see the downside to that.

BTW .. here is a link to the NC State Historical Website ….

You would think we could at least get our history right …. I dont recall the program being suspended for 2 years!

    http://historicalstate.lib.ncsu.edu/catalog/0008616
The accusations resulted in State being banned from the 1990 NCAA Tournament and the subsequent suspension of the basketball program at State for a period of two years. The Poole Commission Report, along with investigations by the NCAA, UNC, and NCSU, eventually concluded that there had been no improprieties by the Coach.
