Marvin, UNC-CH football scandals featured on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines”

On Easter Sunday our man Marvin Austin (0-3 against NC State) was featured during the first 15 minutes of ESPN’s magazine program hosted by Bob Ley.  I watched it at 10:00 a.m. but it is also scheduled for 9:00 p.m. tonight.  You can also watch it online here, although Ley’s discussion with Shefter is not included.

I found it quite entertaining.  Here is a brief summary in “bytes” format.  My comments are in bold.

* Bob Ley’s first line: “At the time, Marvin Austin was only part of the carnage in Chapel Hill.”  In the introduction Ley also mentions that 13 UNC-CH players were held out of the opening game and the ongoing, season-long suspension problems connected to the scandals.  UNC-CH fans must be thrilled with this great national publicity.

* From there the piece explained how Marvin was trying to rehabilitate his image in preparation for the NFL draft.  It shows him sweating in yoga class, lifting wieghts, and working out on a football field outside of Tampa as part of a program (explained to have been paid for by an agent) to get him ready for the draft and UNC-CH’s “Pro Day.”  Isn’t a UNC-CH football “Pro Day” a ridiculous redundancy?  Isn’t every day there a “Pro Day.”

* Marvin explains that yoga helps him “exscape [sic] some of the things that were very tough for me to deal with.”

* Next we see footage of Marvin’s televised “hat out of the bag” move on signing day, putting on the UNC-CH hat, and saying “Tar Heels baby.”  Too funny.

* Marvin’s Twitter problems are detailed.  I am very annoyed that SFN didn’t get even a passing mention.  Although my favorite picture of all time made the broadcast.  I wonder if they got it from here:

* Regarding that picture (and Austin’s tweeting in general), ESPN’s Kelly Naqi narrates: “the NCAA took notice, and by July there was an investigation into whether Austin was receiving illegal benefits.”

* Naqi then documents Austin’s various trips paid for “by people outside his family, including a friend he declined to identify and agent Gary Wichard.”

* During an interview with Naqi Marvin explains that the improper benefits were like “being caught shooting firecrackers on the 4th of July” – that you aren’t supposed to but that “everybody does it.”  Marvin then asserted that other schools that recruited him offered extra benefits, but that UNC-CH offered no illegal benefits.  Everyone who believes this, please contact SFN, as we know of an African prince who is requesting bank information by email so he can get a quick loan.

* Naqi explains that the NCAA has yet to rule on the UNC-CH case “which expanded to include allegations of benefits and academic fraud involving as many as 16 football players.” More great publicity for UNC-CH!

* Marvin’s mom was interviewed and started crying, at which point Marvin and his mom embraced and Marvin sobbed openly at length. Oh give me a break with this “Marvin as victim” crap.

* Butch explains that Marvin, “with the exception of this one particular incident, has been a terrific football player and a good kid in our program.”  I want to know which “one particular incident” Butch is talking about.  There are several to choose from.

* The rest of the piece is an interview with ESPN “NFL Insider” Adam Shefter, who explains that Austin has probably gotten himself into the bottom of the first round.  Shefter goes so far as to say that this “is a testament to the young man and how well he has done in handling some of the adversity that has come his way.”  “Adversity”?  Hilarious!  Good to know that Butch’s talking points have been widely disseminated. Look back at the Twitter picture and decide how much “adversity” Austin and Little were suffering at the Aquagirl festival in Miami.  I would like some of that adversity.

I wonder how this will play among the adults in Chapel Hill, assuming there are any. If Thorp was acting like a Chancellor rather than a nerdy Butch cheerleader/ football booster he might actually show some leadership.

” explained to have been paid for by an agent ”

    Why stop now?

Not sure I can agree with you on that one, Old McD. If you get some of that adversity, I hope that adversity comes with it’s own supply of antibiotics and/or anti-retrovirals respectively. Not to mention a couple of grocery bags.

To be fair, how much of that can be blamed on Austin? He came to UNC young, immature, malleable, and impressionable. He left a product of his environment.

Austin’s program, coach, and school should have helped Austin develop strong character and ethics, but @ UNC, those three entities only reinforced and developed the worst within him.

Austin is a product of his time @ UNC. He reflects what he lived, saw, and learned. If his coach, AD, and chancellor refuse to accept any accountability, why shouldn’t he?

Thanks hoop. I linked that up in the entry. I wonder why the Ley-Shefter discussion was not included though.

I’m not sure Austin is the product of his time there, but his presence there (ie the decision to come there) certainly wasn’t an accident.

I agree about all of the institutional shortcomings to which you refer, but I think that attracted his derelict personality more than being responsible for forming it.

  9. old13 04/24/2011 at 1:31 PM #

^ Agreed. The “institution” should have helped Marvin remold his “derelict personality” into a responsibile one rather than reinforcing what arrived on campus. As far as I’m concerned, the Marvin thing and all the other shenanigans going on with the NCAA investigation in Chapel Hole reflect, not only on UNC-CHeat per se, but also on the entire UNC System (including, unfortunately, NCSU) as a result of the BOG performing as a co-conspirator by not taking a lead in an internal (independent) investigation, the precedent for which was, of course, set about 20 years ago.

Maybe they edited it for the internet. The piece on ESPN.com is only 8:34. How long is the OTL piece on him on the ESPN channel?

  11. wolf_at_my_door 04/24/2011 at 2:09 PM #

I just watched the OTL video. All one big show for the camera.

Marvin looks hungry. If I was that little yoga chick, I’d keep my distance.

what i saw was a little boy and his mother crying because they knew what happened was wrong!

i also saw him admit guilt on national media! why? that’s crazy, why in the world would you continue to put yourself into the spotlight and keep fueling the fire.

haha, i also saw the one highlight that unc has over a total of four years of beatdowns by TOB! they just had to sneak that in their.

this interview was totally inappropriate! just makes me want the ncaa to expose these type of people(criminals/unc)! anyone and everyone involved, which includes E S P N, should be ASHAMED of themselves!

I have a friend who has had a bit of limit interaction with Marvin, he described him being a really big kid with the mental age of about 15. From what I saw of him in that video – that seems about right to me. I could tell he knows he has done wrong, and has to man up to survive in the adult world.

The boy had been coddled his whole life, and Carolina was perfectly content to let him stay a boy, if not enabling him to not have to grow up. I see this now more as an indictment on Butch and the whole athletics program there instead of Marvin is an awful thug of person.

I seriously doubt that anyone could play for TO’B for 3 years and show a lack of maturity of that magnitude.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Shefter were giving Austin the benefit of the doubt due to the time when he and Butch were both on the NFL Network. He’s certainly not going to totally go after one of his old buddy’s players.

I guess I can add this to a litany of issues I have with ESPN. This is a puff-piece designed to help ESPN promote ratings for their Draft coverage, and nothing more. Marvin Austin should be a high draft pick regardless of his circumstances at UNC; he’s big, fast, and strong. The whole weeping willow act was a bit too much, but again, it’s ESPN showing that these players have heart (or guilt). Nothing like a two minute foray into reality TV. The real story is that few are reporting the extent to which agents were involved at UNC. Given the image we’ve all grown to loathe, UNC is supposed to be immune to agent-involvement and academic fraud and the like. The fact that ESPN had nothing more than passing interest in a virtual calamity (had it been USC or OSU) in terms of agent involvement only deepens my distrust of ESPN in general. It’s hard to be unbiased in reporting something that perhaps stains your primary interest (either in a week with the Draft or in four/five months with the start of the NFL season). I almost hate to say this, but I’ve seen better coverage from the N&O on this subject, which is sad.

Folks let’s remember – anyone can be a “bad apple”. However, our friends to the west chose to promote and market Austin pretty aggressively. He was on the billboard on I-40. He had full page feature on their program.

He went to UNC because the two were a perfect fit.

it also stuck out like a sore thumb when he referred to all schools recruiting him would do what it took with recruits… also mentioning scenarios in osu, oregon and auburn… but unc-ch did nothing wrong? HA! it just baffles me that his handlers would allow him to get in front of the media with this message! i don’t know what is funnier?? espn mentioning unc-ch football is back or austin saying programs at the top would do what it takes to “you know??” neither being true!

austin should be drafted, as mentioned before on his physical abilities alone.. i don’t really care about him, i want unc to be punished!

..and i recall a tweet posted earlier this year maybe even back in football season about austin questioning ..”is this what i came back for?””

Did they mention his large man tits. They also show that he was the victim of excessive steroid use and an excessive fondness for cupcakes. Poor guy.

I like the part where he’s asked if anyone offered him illegal benefits, and one can tell that’s he’s trying to hold hold his tongue. Wow – talk about looking guilty!

  23. StateFans 04/24/2011 at 8:18 PM #

    any mention of cupcakes?

Just a heads up, but Snoop Dogg tweeted a pic of himself with Henson and Barnes last night. I wasn’t sure if any of the SFN authors followed @snoopdogg and wanted to make sure you were aware in case anyone wanted to store that little gem away should anything negative ever come to light regarding the bball program.

Austin is the perfect poster guy for UNC athletics.

I reckon all this has all pretty much blown over and no more will be done to UNC than already has been. It appears Butchie, Baddour and Thorpe are safe and the NCAA hounds are finally at bay.
