Per UNC: Burney, Brown, Little, Austin, M McAdoo and Quinn all out(total of 15 being held out)

The UNC Football Bus

We have to give credit to a poster on Pack Pride for this particular image. It should be a wild morning.

Listen to Taylor Zarzour interviewing IC’s Greg Barnes who is live in Chapel Hill.

Mark Armstrong just tweeted:

Press release from UNC:

Chapel Hill – The University of North Carolina has declared six student-athletes on the football team ineligible for Saturday’s season-opening game for violating school and/or NCAA rules. The University is also withholding at least six other student-athletes from Saturday’s game while the investigation continues.

The six ineligible student-athletes include: defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.

Six other student-athletes who will be withheld from Saturday’s game include: tailback Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, tailback Ryan Houston, safety Da’Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.

The number of games that those 12 student-athletes may miss has not been determined at this time. The investigation continues to include both agent-related and academic issues.

The University also continues to work today with the NCAA to determine the eligibility status of three other student-athletes. Those three will not accompany the team to Atlanta on Friday morning. Further information will be announced when a decision on their status for the game is reached.

“We’re obviously very disappointed to learn that the actions of a number of our student-athletes have resulted in their being unable to compete in Saturday’s game,” says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “It is important to note again that people should not make assumptions as to the nature of each student-athlete’s involvement with these issues.

“We are still working with the NCAA staff to resolve these eligibility issues. The NCAA is focusing on each of their situations on a case-by-case basis. Together we are working to determine their status in as thorough and fair a process as is possible.

“I know our fans share my disappointment, but I hope they will show their strong support for the student-athletes on the football team who will represent our University on Saturday. I am proud of the way they have worked so hard to prepare for this season despite numerous distractions. They have my full support.”

“Moving forward, Dick Baddour, Butch Davis and I are determined to use this as an opportunity to look hard at our programs, resources and people to ensure that everyone associated with the football program upholds the values that are central to Carolina’s culture, most especially our academic values,” says Chancellor Holden Thorp.

“As I’ve have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University,” says head football coach Butch Davis. “We are disappointed the players’ choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina. Our coaches and players have a tremendous challenge this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be excited to face LSU.”

According to IC’s Greg Barnes, Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant and Deunta Williams did not board the bus. Barnes and Zarzour is also speculating that Johnny White did not board the bus either which would mean UNC’s top 3 running backs are not on the way to Atlanta.

Just curious. Baddour said earlier not to read into anything if/when/who sits out the LSU game. Wonder if he is still going to say that?

  2. JEOH2 09/03/2010 at 12:37 PM #

Lou Holtz has not looked more happier then when he’s been ROASTing Carolina on ESPN…

Glad LSU finally knows who they need to practice against…24 hours before the game…!

  3. package5 09/03/2010 at 12:47 PM #

I keep hearing that Johnny White never boarded the bus this morning. So that would mean the top 3 running backs are all out. And mean that Joe Schad was exactly correct at 16 players

  4. Lunatic Fringe 09/03/2010 at 12:47 PM #

Butch and Company knew EXACTLY who was going to be available all week long. It is not surprising that Joe Schad would get some information on this list.

    Lets see:

    Option 1:
Announce earlier in the week when slow news and LSU has time to prepare for personnell being missing.

    Option 2:
Announce after first evening of games (lots of other stories) and while LSU is traveling to Atlanta.

The only reason we probably know this list today is because they have to board a bus to Atlanta.

  5. tractor57 09/03/2010 at 1:15 PM #

And apparently Joe Schad did as well.

I’m trying hard not to gloat but “do the crime, pay the time”

Getting closer to that death penalty here – I don’t expect it will happen for a number of reasons but …

LF, I seem to remember a discussion of suspended players traveling to ATL but just not playing…imagine that…no one would know who was playing until they stepped on the field…well no one, but UNC…

Pack05 – Where is your tip coming from? Can you link, or is it personal?

I’ve been waiting on the 3-pronged pitchfork analogy to be complete. I suspected the third ‘prong’ to be recruiting violations, though.

  10. StateFans 09/03/2010 at 2:13 PM #

Is Blake making the trip to Atlanta?

  11. Pack05 09/03/2010 at 2:23 PM #

ppack3… everything from this source has come to pass. Blake has been linked to recruiting violations. I’ll stand by it and be extremely disappointed if it does not come to pass. Has not been wrong yet.

Word is he has been outed by an agent runner and a former player. The details are sketchy from source on that so I can’t promise that but at this time it seems to be something along those lines.

  12. Pack05 09/03/2010 at 2:25 PM #

More news pointing in the direction I just mentioned:

    from schadjoe
“Among those interviewed in NCAA/UNC case: an agent, a known runner and a former player who allegedly “screened” agents.”

  13. Pack05 09/03/2010 at 2:29 PM #

Looks like it’s starting to break:

    @schadjoe
Former UNC player/runner is Chris Hawkins who was kicked off team by Bunting and transferred to Marshall.

  14. ppack3 09/03/2010 at 2:36 PM #

I get this feeling of anticipation swell up in my gut every time a new piece of damning news starts to break about UNC. If this story breaks before tomorrow night, Baddour and Thorpe are going to be watching Butch and Blake, as Dead Men Walking, for the better part of 3 1/2 hours, on national TV, as UNC’s reputation sinks like the Titanic!

“look we need to come up with a good name for this debacle

    cheat-a-gate
    agent-gate
    twitter-gate”

    I was going to suggest – in Marvin’s honor – “CUP-GATE”

But now, with Pack05’s revelations (which I’m REALLY hoping are true), I’m going with “SANTA CLAWS”

  16. choppack1 09/03/2010 at 3:23 PM #

The thing that should have UNC and all of their fans worried is that the worst case scenario still continues to be on the table.

When this whole thing broke – I thought that the best case scenario for UNC was that Marvin would miss a few games and Little would miss 1 or 2.

However, the worst case scenario is still very much on the table…and the 12-15 players missing this game is right in line w/ the worst case scenario.

  17. MatSci94 09/03/2010 at 3:42 PM #

What I don’t understand is why UNC didn’t just post the list on Tues. All the talking would have happened, then it gets buried when actual football starts last night.

All they did was postpone the debate, encourage a “Bus Watch”, allow continued speculation of which of the many investigations people were in trouble for, etc.

Now, after all of the things have been released, there seems to be the feeling that the worst hasn’t even been seen yet.

Carolina’s bus seats will be as empty as the Kenan Stadium bleachers in a State-Carolina game!

Wonder if the bus seats are made of aluminum? 😉

    “@schadjoe

Ok, but… Joe Shad’s twitter shows the below as his last tweet, about 12 hours ago:

“Iowa extended Kirk Ferentz through 2020”

The last tweet about Carolina was:

“North Carolina leaves for Atlanta at 9:30 a.m. on Fri. The school may know by they which players cannot play and which held for precaution.”

    So what gives?

  21. tjfoose1 09/03/2010 at 5:36 PM #

“What I don’t understand is why UNC didn’t just post the list on Tues. All the talking would have happened, then it gets buried when actual football starts last night.”

Waiting to release stories on a Friday before a holiday weekend is an old political trick, it ‘buries’ the story in the dead news cycle of the weekend, when the public is less likely to be paying attention.

Probably doesn’t work so much the same for sports, since their big news cycle is the weekend, but that could be it right there… Releasing it on Tues and it’s the lead on every sports network and show. Releasing it on Friday and the story is ‘buried’ by the Thur night games and the lead ins to Saturday’s games.

Translation – Our athletes are even more stupid than the general student population. They can’t even follow the required cheating 101 course. We’ll remedy that with the next tutor.

Honestly though, how could the administration there really believe the chiefs Indians were students. I would like to know their graduation rate for FB and BB. I bet it’s pretty high and we know this same thing has been going on forever.
