Tom O’Brien & Dick Sheridan Get Together For Coaching Clinic

“It made sense to have Coach Sheridan come back here,” O’Brien said. “He had tremendous success. He did a lot for this university. He did a lot for the players.

“One of the things I found when I started to do some of the Wolfpack Club events during the winter was the tremendous respect and love his former players had for the man.”

O’Brien also had a strong working knowledge of Sheridan’s program from O’Brien’s time as an assistant and offensive coordinator at Virginia under George Welsh. That’s when Sheridan led the Wolfpack to six bowl games in seven years and was a regular contender in the ACC race.

“I always had a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Sheridan and his football teams, the way they played, the way they carried themselves and everything they did,” O’Brien said.

Coach OBrian is a smart guy. He’s seen the impact of the Wolfpack tradition on the BB program and has already figured out how to capitalize on it for football. This is another indicator of good things to come. When we picked up our BB tickets at the Vaugh Towers last Friday, I was shocked to see the improvements to Carter Findley. Hadn’t been to the field in a long time and though you see it on TV, you just can’t get the full picture of how impressive our facilities are. Seems we now have all the pieces in place for an outstanding season. I’m loving basketball; but, also can’t wait for football to start.

I’m serious, y’all; we’ve got a basketball coach who understands Valvano, regularly visits his gravesite and everyone compares their coaching, and now we’ve got a football coach who is being compared with Dick Sheridan and now even talks with him?

This owes in part to my fandom beginning in 1981, but those two coaches are my ideals for their respective sports, and I’m completely geeked over their potential here!

TOB is not an alum but he is doing all the right stuff in asking the former FB players to contact him on the media sites, and reconnecting with Coach Sheridan to try to develop a feel for the program. That is definitely not required or neccessary, but it is great to hear that TOB is interested in the overall program and going the extra mile already.

This is off topic but anyone watching VA Tech getting killed by So. IL? They’ve mentioned N.C. State a couple of times during the broadcast. Most recently for the way So. IL is hitting all their threes. We’re getting good press based on our past accomplishments eventhough we’re not at the big dance.

I will give credit where it is due, to Amato for facilities improvement and Sendek for academic improvements, but our current coaching situation of Lowe,Towe and O’Brien is the best since Valvano and Sheridan.

By the way Sheridan and Valvano were really close friends.

    Our future looks really bright!

good post graywolf. If TOB had come here before the improvements would he have been able to get them done? Who knows, but Amato was definitely the right man for that job. Now TOB is seemingly doing all the right things, embracing his new home and fostering a family atmosphere.

Key information in that article: That TOB was hosting 200 high school coaches from around the state.

He is certainly laying the foundation for a successful run here. I am geeked about football season now too. Its incredible the positive vibe around Pack athletics. The sky is the limit right now.

Now if we could only get an upgrade in our AD like we have with our FB and BB coaches!

  8. WolfPup35 03/18/2007 at 5:32 PM #

    AMEN and AMEN!!

FWIW, TOB and SL are making the AD LF look like he’s been TCB in respect to the BB and FB programs. IMHO, it will now take a huge SNAFU on LF’s part before the topic of replacng him arises again at the WPC AGM, so anyone wishing him gone is probably SOL.

    just sayin’…

    Nice use of initials, wood!

Almost like my favorite line from Good Morning Vietnam…

“Sir, if the VP is such a VIP, shoulndn’t we keep the PC on the QT, cuz if word leaks to the VC, he could end up MIA, then we’d all be put on KP.”

Look at it this way…with SL and TOB now on staff he can turn his attention to some of our other NCSU sports teams. Let’s get some more hype for out women’s basketball team (although they’re doing a pretty good job of hypin’ themselves), the baseball team (which I’m pretty stoked about our prospects this season) and our new women’s softball team (they’re a force too). Ply is right, but as long as LF just doesn’t screw up and stays out of the way and let the Alumni “run things” then we all should be just fine…just no more deals with the Other NC school in the East!

I just thought of something and it is a bit off topic, but with the recent naming of “Kay Yow Court” in Reynolds; what is the liklihood of us renaiming our court “Jimmy V Court” next season in honor of the 25th Anniversary of our National Championship??

  13. SaccoV 03/18/2007 at 7:24 PM #

I’m glad that the discussion has focused back to Fowler. Unfortunately, because he has fallen into the proverbial oil well with TOB and SL, I think we’re going to be stuck with him for some time to come, unless of course that Tennessee job opens up soon (fingers crossed). Women’s softball, women’s basketball, and wrestling have all made some vast improvements in competing within the conference and with other teams in the nation. Congratulations to all these sports for great seasons. I believe strongly that Willis Casey’s vision is closer to a reality than it has been since he left.

Off Topic here: I wonder when Rick Barnes sits down to re-evaluate his season in the next week or two, if he will second guess his decision not to go to NC State. Part of me thought that he said no because he thought this would be one of his best chances to win a National Championship.

Don’t we all remember, “State fans are crazy to think that RB would come knowing he has Durant coming in this year… he could win a NC.”

…well he didn’t even make it to the sweet sixteen.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time I firmly believed he was the saviour of NCSTATE basketball.

Glad I was dead wrong on that. I love Sideny Lowe!

    Let’s Go Pack, Beat WVU!

More good press for TOB and NCSU:

    http://tinyurl.com/2lcwj2

The article from ESPN includes this quote:
“I expect that we’ll have a winning season and go to a bowl game. That’s the goal we’re going to start off with. You know, I’ve been to eight straight bowl games. I don’t want to break that streak.”
    — NC State coach Tom O’Brien

It’s really refreshing to see State mentioned early, often and in a good light these days.

    1. Keep the faith re: Foulup! I’m sure he’ll do something (else) to earn a dismissal. The real questions are: Will he stay out of the way of TOB and SL and let them do their jobs? (He has no idea how to actually support them!) AND: Does the administration have the foresight and guts to get an AD who actually would promote NCSU/things Wolfpack!

    2. I’ve seen several suggestions for honoring Case and V by naming something for them, which I’d like to see. Seems like Sloan should be in there somewhere – and maybe something in FB for Earl Edwards and Sheridan.

  17. doug74 03/18/2007 at 8:29 PM #

This also reminds me of the early 70’s when we had Holtz and Sloan. I bet that TOB will stay longer though. Sloan could be an a–hole but he was our a–hole. To me Sid combines some of the best of Sloan and V but knows more about basketball.

A friend of mine from Lexington came to State on a football scholarship. He said the first thing Dick Sheridan told the incoming freshmen was that he would not see hair coming out from underneath their helmets, he would not hear profanity come out of their mouth and when traveling they would be dressed appropriately to represent North Carolina State University – no athletic attire. “Gentleman, if you can’t live with that you can’t live here”.

Is there ANY wonder that Dick and TOB would get along?

  19. blpack 03/18/2007 at 8:54 PM #

Good call by TOB. Linking with State’s past endears him to the present and should pay dividends in the future. Imagine being a high school coach and seeing DS and TOB in the room and you were invited to listen.

I don’t understand how two great coaches who approached us about being our coach (both citing our great fans) has any impact on an analysis of Lee Fowler?

People seem to really like EL and TOB. Had Lee Fowler had his way, neither of their predecessors would have ever left and therefore neither of these men would have been hired.

^NEVER have truer words be spoken. Our AD is Mr. Status quo until a critical mass forms or one of the handful or high rollers gets upset. If he is an example of a leader then I’m an astronaut.

  22. noah 03/19/2007 at 8:57 AM #

My only regret is that we didn’t hire Tom O’Brien after O’Cain was fired. Yes, it was never an option. I know…

For what it’s worth, Obrien doesn’t have any of the rules of hair (facial or skull). The rules are all conduct and football-related. Personally, as someone who prefers to shave about once a month, I’ve never understood why that makes me more likely to not behave appropriately.

  23. GAWolf 03/19/2007 at 1:22 PM #

It could possibly be a unity of the team thing, Noah. All the kids look the same and play for each other the same… the “indivuality” of beards and braids takes a back seat. I have no personal knowledge of the reasoning behind such rules, but that would just make more sense to me than it being for behaviorial purposes. Just a thought….

I love this move by the way. I think both this and Sid’s approach to our past shows just how confident these guys are as coaches. They aren’t scared of the past as an obstical for their personal success, but rather they see it as an opportunity to better the program. That takes some eggs.

  24. GAWolf 03/19/2007 at 1:25 PM #

With respect to Jed, we can only hope that the inevitable success of Lowe and OB will get NCSU athletics enough attention to get some SEC programs calling for Jed. We all know that’s the only reason he’s here….
