This is DD’s best team and this is what we get? No more excuses “we are too young “, “ we building for the future “ blah blah blah. This was THE year and we blew it. That being said, we are NOT a football school and if DD is dismissed, who replaces him? Does anyone think we can lure Urban Meyer or Nick Saban – didn’t think so. Even if we did hire a coach of that caliber, does anyone think he would stay around- again, didn’t think so. So, as it has been stated here, we are what we are. I have accepted it – mediocrity is ours. Sure, one year we may stumble in to an ACC championship game, but winning will not be sustained long term. I have history to back me up. 1979, almost 40 years – need I say more?

Can someone please answer a very basic question: Why would a prestigious university create fake classes if not for athletes? Just scratching my head on that one.

Let’s face it, no way does zag beat UNC tomorrow. I just have to get myself prepared for the obnoxious snickering Walmart crowd that I will surely face all day Tuesday and many days ahead. There will be no mention of the scandal. Even if there were, rest assured that I will be vehemently informed that ‘this’ team had nothing to do with the scandal. But what they fail to realize, ‘this’ team was recruited and made their decision to attend UNC off of the legacy of the scandalous group. They also fail to realize that reputation of the university continues to be tarnished as long as they say it was an academic issue – not athletic. In other words, ‘we acknowledge fake classes existed for everyone – not just athletes’ Let that sink in
for a minute. But I digress from my thoughts about tomorrow’s victory. Just be ready for what is to come because we have been there before (I hate them so much it hurts).

Well stated Seawolf. And to put things in perspective for those who did not witness DT’s greatness, not only was there no 3 pt line, there was also no shot clock. He still AVERAGED almost 30 points per game – let that sink in for a minute. DSJ averages 19 with a 3 pt line and a shot clock. He is no DT, but I still enjoy seeing him perform.

I can remember games and players going back to the late 1970s. Honestly, I can’t remember many players at any position as talented as DSJ”

Alas, I really pity those who never saw DT play. He was and still is the most incredible college player I have ever witnessed.

In a way, I agree with Kahn. I mean really, we have a ‘one and done’ rule. Are we now down to a ‘1/2 and done’ rule? That being said, here is where I disagree with mr Kahn – it is NOT a job for DSJ. He is NOT being compensated monetarily for his unique skill set. For selfish reasons I would enjoy seeing him play and finish strong. But I clearly understand the risk involved and would understand the rationale for limiting his play at this juncture.

    Choppack,

What we want and the reality of the situation are two different things. Keep in mind that any new hire would be entering the 2017-18 season as a first year coach with all of the “issues” facing a first year coach and you generally get a pass that first year. This coach would have to DRASTICALLY turn things around in the 2018-19 or face dismissal by the new AD in 2019. Now, are there coaches that would sign-up for this scenario – Yes. But are there any DECENT coaches that would sign up for this job at this point – probably not. These high demand coaches would go elsewhere with a more stable environment. Thus, by firing DD now, our plight of being unable to compete would continue with the wrong person at the helm. So you see, before releasing DD, one has to consider the next step and I cannot see a quality coach enlisting his services for NCSU with a looming AD retirement.

…and who would accept a coaching job at NCSU knowing that an AD change could occur in 2019?

    Ok Adventuroo,

I was off by 6 months, but I stand by my statements. Why would she “rock the boat’ if she is a short timer? If she is smart (which I know she is), you give those worries to the next AD. Not because you are lazy and don’t want to do your job, but because the new AD will want to select the new coach (ala ECU, UNC, etc.)

If Yow still plans on retiring in 2018, no changes will be made until she leaves. We are stuck with DD – get over it and move on.

When I arrived at the office today, the first UNC fan complains on how the officiating cost them the game. Next UNC fan I bump into while I’m getting coffee states “we can’t control the refs..,”. Me being a nice guy, I just say sorry/sad your team lost. But their arrogance is alive and well.

As I watched the highlights of UNC (no interest in watching the actual game), I thought to myself ‘What about the bogus classes?’ ‘Where are we with the NCAA investigation?’ I guess all is forgotten and swept under the rug. Of course, we all knew this would happen during tournament time, but it remains to be seen what happens in the months ahead – especially if they win it all. Unfortunately, I think we know the answer to that as well.

CowDog, I agree with everything you stated. But I think we all know in our heart, nothing (and I mean nothing) will happen in March. If I am not mistaken, only the women’s program was thrown under the bus – men’s program will keep rolling (sad, but true).

Back to your point about only having 9 scholarship players. You do realize Gott is competing against (and I hate to admit it) two of college basketball’s premiere programs. Others probably shied away from us for that reason (e.g. Callipari, Smart, Wright, etc…). Gott knew that recruiting against the blues would be a challenge, but accepted the job anyway. Does anyone in his right mind think that Gott only wanted 9 scholarship players this year? Does anyone think that he did not try to recruit 5 star talent? Stop and think about it, if you are a 5 star recruit, would NC State be at the top of your list – probably not. So he had an off recruiting year – it happens and will continue in the short term. I for one am not willing to re-live the Les, Herb, or Sidney years all over again. After a pattern of bad seasons then and only then would I entertain the idea of a coaching change. But until that happens, staying the course is the most prudent thing to do.

Oh how convenient, more violations on MEN’S soccer and WOMEN’s BB. Is anyone surprised other sports were spared? Clearly there would be no incentive for additional academic misconduct in the revenue sports (e.g. Football and Men’s BB). Yeah, men’s soccer and women’s BB is where we should focus our attention.

Has anyone been on campus lately? Why would you attend a football game when you are essentially living at a country club? Fast food, pool, weight room, wifi, etc. Lomg ago, going to a game was the thing to do on Saturday. Now, you can just go to your tablet or phone and watch from anywhere. Seems pretty obvious to me why attendance has dropped.

As soon as we lost to Louisville in the NCAAT, I predicted Trevor and Kyle would leave. This is one time that I truly hate being right.

As many have already stated, I too am looking forward to next year IF (big if) everyone returns. Lacey has a step-back jumper that probably has some NBA scouts taking notice and he could possibly enter the draft. I detect some “issue” between Gott and Washington and I would not be surprised to see a transfer. Hopefully, I am wrong with these predictions and everyone stays. However, over recent years, I have seen defections (Lewis, Purvis) that have significantly impacted our “next year’s” team.

But in fairness, the 84 Houston team was a totally different team (Drexler left for the NBA). For that matter, we were a different team in 84 as well. My point being that to compare the 83 game to the 84 challenge game is like comparing apples to oranges. On the other hand, this Louisville team has the same team composition that we faced earlier in the year. They are a better team now – but so are we. Should be a classic – can’t wait.

The statistics presented compare ratings of the champions. But to be fair, is it not possible that the non-champions had coaches that also stressed efficient offense and defense? In other words, there are some intangibles that cannot be measured (Cinderellas excluded). Sometimes one team is just luckier than the opposition (Again, Cinderellas excluded).

‘Duke has a strong team’.. ‘they are ranked’.. ‘They have beaten top tier teams’ ..high RPI. blah, blah, blah. I have heard all of these things. But THIS game is a tobacco road showdown and if history has taught us anything about tobacco road, a win IS possible. This is why we (Wolfpack Nation) will be in full force, this is why we will watch, this is why the game is played. Go Pack – Beat Duke!!

I was at PNC for both the LA Tech and Cincy games. Unless there is some DRASTIC change, I do not see too many ACC wins. Gott can get prepared for his first NIT.
