Why is Sam from Burn Notice sitting on a motorcycle in the middle of a desert asking me if I want to retire comfortably? Is that his version of retirement and would it really cost 500k?

I really don’t get some of you. We are in year 5 of DD and you guys still seem to think you are going to see something different this year. Sure the teams we played may not have been pushovers, but most of the teams on our schedule are not pushovers. Every year we find ways to lose WTF games, and not win against better teams. After the first 2 games of the year it appears more of the same.

Ok if you are ready for a new coach maybe time you start putting up the money to buy out the contract. I can understand the frustration, I can also see the depths the football program sank to in the past. I so see some strides but I’m not ready to pat coach D on the back just yet. I’m also not ready to buy out the contract. I might be there at the end of the season if I don’t see more progress. No I do not expect to be in the chase for the natty this year. I do expect some improvement on the filed. Lack of any improvement would set on the path of ending the relationship. I don’t expect to be there but I will concede the possibility.

I think it was Bobby Bowden who said something like the progression of a football program is to lose by a lot, then lose by a little, then win by a little, then win by a lot. DD certainly started out with the losing by a lot and we have progressed to losing by a little. This year should be the year we start winning by a little. I’m hopeful but also wouldn’t be surprised to see things go the other way.

My thinking is similar etab4u. Maybe we take steps back and it really is time for a change. Maybe we continues that progression of moving forward. I can see either happening. But I have seen some progress – we went from a dreadful team with little talent to a team with decent talent. Enough? NO. Progress? Yes.

As fans of NC State (if posters are indeed of that ilk), we want to see NC State’s athletics teams win. The debates certainly come on how to best do that, but in the end, we all want to see us win.

We have DD through the end of this year, regardless of what happens. I’m going to pull for him to win. Do I expect us to win the Atlantic? Nope. I expect 7-8 wins, but will be pulling for NC State even in games we lose.

Some are saying if DD doesn’t get to 8 in the regular season, he’s likely gone. I suspect he has to get to 7 and will be very interested to see how that scenario would play out if he makes 7 but not 8.

Do I ever think DD is going to win big here? Nah. Do I think he’s that good of a coach? Nah. Do I think that NC State is ever breaking through in football? Nah. Do I think he runs a program that I can be proud of? Yes.

So the question becomes what the minimal number of wins should be year in and out. I think if a NC State football coach can go 7-5 (4-4) they will be here indefinitely as long as they meet the “table stakes” pieces of program management. DD is doing program management at an acceptable level, so I suspect if he gets to 7, he’s staying.

I don’t think Yow will do anything if the team wins six coupled with a bowl loss. She can already point to a competitive, last play loss and unexpected injuries. Valdez is out with an acl.

I think that is exactly how this is going to play out. DD hits six and we are shoveled a lot of manure about him doing things the right way, men of character, injuries, tough schedule etc. Because deep down knows that if this train goes off the track her butt is on the line as well. No AD should ever get to hire 2 bball coaches and 2 football coaches that have failed. Smarter heads will step in and make her retire early. Its inevitable.

Heres the part you are going to have to wrap your head around though, when she doesnt fire him she is going to give him a nice ext and raise since he is due in terms of length on his existing one. I think in that scenario our fans will lose their minds.

I see this a ton nowadays from his supporters (not you specifically Rib) but I dont get what in the hell this even means. You are proud to be mediocre? Proud are kids only get in marginal trouble? Proud of what exactly? Its not DD’s job to raise these players or get them to graduate. He has to win games.

Continuous toleration of mediocrity. As an administrator, do you know what that’s going to get you? A shrinking operating budget.

All of you need to step away from the ledge and enjoy the ride. This team will play better with every week and game that passes.

92owen: Good question. I have watched NC State sports for nearly 40 years. During that time, we have had one top 10 team (thank you Rivers), a handful of top 15-25 type teams (Sheridan was the best coach we’ve had in my lifetime), and one or two good years here or there scattered in. We are (in the history of our program) a .500 program in all games. I look and see the deck stacked against us in the “inputs” and I don’t really see the financial or institutional commitment to changing that. Call me old, soft or a loser, but I think it is a fairly realistic view of our football program (not in basketball).

    So, we have some choices:
    – Change the inputs: The school probably isn’t changing. That would require a huge influx of private money. I sense LTRs ensure a captive audience and sell outs but have left the fan base a bit wary. I know I’m not putting my money towards this.
    – Get a different coach and one that is a bit more “gimmicky”: I’m good with this and preferred PJ to TOB. I was willing to take some up and downs for some truly special years.
    – Rotate coaches every 3 years until we hit on a winner. Be prepared when that winner leaves to move up (ah la Lou).

Any other move is effectively holding pat. State has been unwilling to make quick moves on coaches, and we’ve not hired gimmicky coaches. Are we really going to see that cash influx? I don’t know.

So, if we’re going to be mediocre, and I see nothing suggesting we’re not, let’s at least run a tight ship. I’d much rather have that than our mediocrity (post Rivers) under Amato, or having a coach run off a once in a decade player.

Totally agree with Rye…again. Maybe because we are getting a little “perspective on life”.

Check out my visual posted earlier. While I have had an endless supply of great memories with friends and family at football games, we have NOT had a lot of great seasons. Hell, even the year we went to the Gator Bowl (most exciting year since I started at State in ’84), we only went 5-3 in conference play.

Some folks might even bitch if we didn’t do better than that.

Not saying to accept mediocrity, just saying that things weren’t really “better” when you thought they were. And yes, I think the perception would be better if we had the occasional “magical” season to offset the turd season.

Hoping for the best, not holding my breath, and tailgating like a mofo until then.

GSO: I think we are in a similar spot with respect to football. I have zero expectations beyond mediocre. I have always said the worst thing for NC State football may have been that Chuck raised those expectations for so many. It was amazing that he could do it, and the LTR scam certainly benefitted from it, but somehow I think we were happier as a fan base before our Icarus moment. Prior to that football was always the fall distraction before the sport that really mattered at NC State (basketball).

The choice to try and chase football really caused us to take the eye of the attainable prize and really paved the way for the accceptance of underperformance in our crown jewel. Many NC State fans accepted 10 years of HWSNBN, 6 years of Lowe and 6 years of Gott because “we’re a football school now” or “we beat UNC at football.” Hogwash.

So, while I don’t love DD, think he is a terrrible in game coach and needs serious polish with the media, if he makes 7-5 and the PTB keep him aroun, then so be it. If they decide to scrape the money together to fire him, then I won’t shed any tears either. If he can’t make the definition of mediocrity for this schedule and with this team, when is he going to do it? With this schedule, there are ten “real” games. He ought to be able to go 5-5 in them. We are currently 0-1, but have a lot of football left to play. I’ll hope for the best.

Rye great posts above. Tough to argue with any of that. Until the PTB really want to get serious about football (see UNC hiring Butch D) then we can only hope for consistently mediocre.

I will say that I absolutely agree with you about the gimmicky coach angle. I have been screaming that for years. Why we didnt hire Mike Leach when given the chance is just bizarre. Crazy or not that mfer knows how to build a program and win with lower ranked recruits. Which is something NCSU will always have. Being so close to the SEC and with so many other d1 schools in the state the numbers will never work out in our favor therefor we need a sonny dykes or Ken nakamara offense. I think either could come in here and build something up especially Ken.

However having said that I think we had a football gift from the Gods drop in our lap and hopefully we are smart enough to accept it. I strongly believe Les Miles would do amazing things here. He could build a winning infrastructure with our program. He knows how to win and is big time football. He most certainly would elevate our recruiting. He is there for our taking but I am sure if DD gets fired this year we will roll the dice on another hot name and start the cycle again. Immediately laying the blame of his failures on the crappy recruiting of DD. I feel that Miles could come in and make our defense strong enough to compete in just about any game.

But we all know what is going to happen, we limp to 6-6 DD gets an ext, Yow leaves in 2019 and the new guy will put him on notice. Then the cycle probably repeats again in 2020. Just how we roll.

I dont disagree with what you are saying Tractor and Rye. My point was we know what we have with DD. I don’t recall our teams getting better throughout the year with him. year over year yes, but thats due to recruiting, not talent getting better year over year. For example our OL still sucks. What I expect as a fan is to be average at 7-5 most years with the 9-3 10-2 year once every 5 or 6 years. That should be sustainable as our players get older and develop. That isnt what is happening. I don’t think we pull the trigger this year regardless of our record. They will wait one more year to let the impact of the ball change not be so rough on the finances.

Tractor just because someone criticizes the coach doesnt mean your response should be help pay for the coaching change. I go to games, NC State gets my money already. My frustration simply comes from those who think we are getting better under DD. We aren’t, and thats not going to change.

Pack1997 no it does not mean to pay BUT is a particular person is so adamant we must change coaches maybe time to put some money on the table. Obviously I don’t think we are there yet but I’m not saying it might not be needed. For better or worse we have invested in Coach D – maybe he is not the answer or maybe he is. I can say I don’t expect to turn TOB’s turd into a diamond in even 5 years. We though TOB would bring stability (and he did lying about ever giving the ball to a fullback – that one statement turned me off him forever). Coach D came into a depleted roster, he has shown some improvement but I agree not enough. My question to you is where do we go? Many here was the “flavor of the day” (especially coaches who were fired for off field issues. Do we really want that?
I have seen some comments from coach D I thought were ill advised, some in game coaching moves that I though were ill advised as well. I saw the same with Holtz, and with any coach since then. If it was simple or if you were willing to go the “dump on the hump” route have at it.

My point is anyone who thought we were going to be considerably better this year hasn’t been watching the past few years. DD has done a good job bringing in some talent. But I don’t see the most important thing which us getting better year over year. Do I think we get there under DD, no. However I haven’t called for his head, nor do I want a retread coming to State. The answer is to continue trying until you find your diamond. Hell it took Clemson two decades, and they just got lucky. It is most likely what we will have to do….and it sucks.
