Media Says: Face It, Archie’s Not Coming Back To State

As much as State fans will hate to hear it, all signs point to Archie Miller spurning NC State.

Just a little while ago, Joe Giglio, a man who is as plugged in to NC State athletics as any outsider can be, posted this tweet:

giglio

Immediately afterwards, Giglio was bombarded with questions and theories.  Sean Miller thinks he can get the UNC job when Roy Williams retires.  Archie doesn’t want to work for Debbie Yow.  Archie wants a B1G job, possibly Indiana.  You name it, it’s probably out there.  But no matter the reason(s), there’s no reasonable reason to believe that Archie Miller will be introduced as NC State’s next head coach in basketball any time soon.  And that makes Miller pretty much this year’s version of Rick Barnes.

Realistically, State will end up doing pretty much what it has always done, that is, hire a new head coach who has shown potential at a lower level of competition.  That list is long, and has some distinguished and not-so-distinguished members:

Everett Case got his first college head coaching job at NC State after serving in various basketball leadership roles for the US Navy during World War II and as a successful high school head coach before that.

Press Maravich had been the head coach at Clemson for six years, compiling a 55–96 record before coming to Raleigh to be an assistant coach under Case.  He led the Wolfpack for two seasons before being lured to LSU.

Norm Sloan was 85–63 at Florida after becoming their first full-time head coach before returning to his alma mater.

Jim Valvano was Iona’s head coach before he came to Raleigh.

Les Robinson was at East Tennessee State prior to coming to Raleigh for the thankless task of salvaging what was left of NC State hoops after the university’s leadership decided to all but kill the program.

Then came people you likely need no introduction to: Herb Sendek from Miami of Ohio, Sidney Lowe from an assistant coaching job at the Detroit Pistons and Mark Gottfried from ESPN.

There’s an obvious pattern here, and it is one that will surely play itself out over the next few days or even weeks: NC State will hire a head coach from a much smaller and generally lower profile program, and hope that it works out.  Case, Sloan and Valvano were no sure thing when they stepped onto NC State’s sidelines.  Neither were Sendek, Lowe or Gottfried.  And the next Wolfpack coach will also be a guy who is no guarantee.  And that’s probably the only guarantee that Wolfpack fans will get.

I have no problem with Keatts, but only IF we are now a school that is willing to pull the plug after year 3. In this day and age of one and done, there is absolutely no reason to keep a bad coach around as long as we did Lowe and Gottfried. By year three, it will be abundantly clear if Keatts is up to the job. In 1983, Coach K’s third season, sure they had a terrible record…BUT…he also had the FANTASTIC recruiting class in hand. As ESPN said in a retrospective a few years back:
“…Krzyzewski’s six-member class in 1982 that included Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie, David Henderson and Jay Bilas. They accomplished many of Coach K’s “firsts,” including their run to the 1986 Final Four. Without them, Krzyzewski’s tenure could have ended in an early and unceremonious exit from Durham, North Carolina.”
Duke fans knew the minute those 1982 HS seniors hit campus. ANd likewise, we will know as well by year 3. No need anymore to go through years 4, 5, and 6 of handwringing and growing realization a guy doesn’t have a clue. So in that sense, and the hope Yow’s replacement will be someone who isn’t afraid to pull the plug, I’m more than happy to give Keatts a chance. I know for darn sure he is WAY better than either of the last two hires.

It means Marshall just wanted a raise.

And Archie wasn’t coming no matter how many chickens BJD sacrificed

You TALK to the man, like he pledged he would when his season ended. You don’t panic and hire this random “just a guy” – he can wait, or who gives a shit if he doesn’t?

She did it for personal and (donor) political expediency. It’s chickenshit. Like the decision to retain her once MG’s wheels started flying off.

not to argue the ridiculous, but don’t think there is a “worse” than Jethro, except that Jethro is in the past and Yow is in the present.

Yow needs to go by Easter.

This guy better get us 2 sweet 16s in his first 4 years. Seriously, why did we fire Gott to replace with this fella? Just puts our athletic department in a financial hole for no reason. I’ll tell you right now we’re not winning any championships with this non-defensive minded dude.

I wish we could have gotten Miller (or holtmann)

But I think Keatts is a very good choice and better than Wade.

Marshall is just a nut job wanting raises

I’m sure other schools in play were talking to Keatts. She settled. It’s her supposed “legacy”. Which looks rather dim at this point.

I really am not concerned with personality so long as the man wins. And that Marshall does.

That’s something that doesn’t go together, and never will again in my lifetime. NC State and wins.

I sure wish I could have all my money and time back.

Congrats to Coach Keatts. I hope he is able to motivate the players we get to play together and win.

We never wanted that bum Archie Miller anyway*.

*I retain the right to revise history and/or my statement should Archie Miller, in fact, show interest.

Disappointment abounds. Not my choice either, however I gotta give him a chance, as they certainly played a great game against UVA, with lesser talent. So maybe we have found our diamond in the rough. Time will tell.

I’m really hopeful. I think history will judge this as a terrific hire. Keats WANTS to be here. He’s well-connected. He plays an exciting brand of basketball, and I think he will win – a lot.

I’m concerned this dude has to coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference against the BEST OF THE BEST and I’ve got jebronis telling me to be glad about it who can’t even get our coaches name right.

Of COURSE Keatts wants to be here! The salary bump will be a significant one from Wilmington.

I knew where this was going after listening to Len Elmore, the local sports talking heads, and reading the N&O. Their headline in the sports section today told me all I needed to know- UNC-W loses so now their coach is available to NC State. This is the THIRD article they’ve had in the past week, plugging Keatts.

Did NCSU even CONSIDER other candidates? This is a PC hire, pure and simple. And no one will expect Keatts to do well for a at least 3 or 4 years because of the “learning curve” from low D-1 to high D-1. We’re going to be stuck with Keatts for a long time. Actually, I’m not sure we’re a high D-1 anymmore. Honestly, folks, is this the best we can do?

I don’t think that winning is the main goal for NCSU revenue sports anymore.

Blame the Millers all you want, but the REAL blame lies in our athletics department. They are hellbent on re-inventing the wheel. They failed three times with Lowe, Doeren (yes) and Gottfried, but they just KNOW that eventually, if they are given the time, that they can create the next Coach K.

I thought BC had the most dismal outlook of any ACC school in football and basketball, but not anymore.

Yow’s replacement will fire this guy on day one.
