NC State Issues Statement on WTVD Report

Found this statement to be interesting in the way that it was worded as the department isn’t putting up much of a denial around WTVD’s report that Mark Gottfried will not be back in west Raleigh next year. Instead, the department is choosing to come out strong around the part of the report that NC State has already sent out ‘feelers’ to alumnus and current Dayton Head Coach, Archie Miller.

Of course, any potential connection with Archie Miller and/or any other potential coaching candidate would never be done directly and wouldn’t even be led by an official member of the Athletics Department. So, all of these reports and denials are generally semantics.

Why not consider Gregg Marshall at Wichita State? Heckuva coach! His record as a head coach is 444 -172 (.721).

Why not Marshall? Because he was highly sought after last time but was insulted by the events and being #2. I dont think he would consider us now – my guess he is holds a pretty big grudge.

Story was that he rubbed DY the wrong way / was stand-offish in the interview, although that’s just his personality. I think we’ve mentioned ad nauseam that we’d be floored by either Arch or Scary Wheat.

Everybody has a different recollection, or perhaps an interpretation. I thought it was Marshall who talked glowingly about how it would be such an honor to compete (But not WIN) against Roy and Mikey and spoke about them in hushed tones…..perhaps getting a thrill up his leg.

That did not go over well with AD Yow as she wanted someone who felt that he could COMPETE and BEAT either of them.

I MAY be wrong about the individual as he was never “publicly” named, but the consensus was it was Greggory….

Others with more info or a better memory can chime in…

    Was that not Turgeon?

^yes, it was turgeon, and I don’t why there’s even an ounce of confusion about it. Was discussed ad nauseoum. Marshall was offered the friggin job and declined. He should’ve been #1 choice but we went after Smart. And Marshall was still close to accepting the gig. He’s admitted as much publicly.

^except Marshall didn’t. That’s your pack faithful letting themselves off the hook for what was a terribly managed coaching search.

Marshall wanted this job twice. We botched it.

    No ARCHIE, Sendek coaching tree.

Go hire Marshall and beat Duke and unc’s a$$es for the next 15 years.

No matter the choice, this saga will more than likely to continue, until basketball is done, and a champ is crowned.

My apologies to Marshall. I thought he was the one that DY rejected for his attitude. Sometimes when we discuss things (not that we EVER do) Ad Nauesem, then facts and the names just start to blend.

I, again…my memory, thought that we were shot down by Marshall and Smart was the one who said yes….and then NO.

BUT, regardless, wonder if he is interested NOW or if he now has a “Gary Williams” attitude towards DY?

The CBS SN announcers are promoting Archie as one of the “Miller Brothers who eat, sleep, drink, etc. MBB…..and have teams with stiffling defenses….” Compared to our situation of having a stinking defense…

Time will tell whom we court and who actually WANTS to be courted.

I’d hire Dabo Swinney to do the hiring. Pay him a tidy sum, send him on.

State is being State, it is Archie or bust.

My understanding is also that it was Marshall. Turgeon was the guy DY thought wasn’t really gonna leave TAMU but was just after a pay raise (wrong).

Will never be known for certain. We do know that Marshall has a habit of not interviewing well.

Thats so dumb about not interviewing well. Look at his body of work. If she honestly didnt hire him because of an interview then she is dumber than I though

Yow better thicken her skin up quite a bit if she’s so easily offended during interviews. I’d imagine the first words out of any half decent coach to Yow would be “so why would I want to come here?”. Archie included

I can see Marshall coming off as a major prick in an interview. He does have an air about himself. But I agree – his success speaks for itself.

What about reports Archie wouldn’t take the job? Just espn guessing or any truth to that?

Marshall is earning $3.3m a year. That’s likely too steep for us. The guy I’d like to make a push for is Frank Martin at South Carolina. He may not be interested, but earns less than Gott, coaches at a football first school, was interested in the Miami job before Larranaga took it, has been successful in power 5 conference play and I believe he is exactly what we need at NC State Basketball.

Overcome the negative press this season will garner (players talking: DSJ, Yert, Anya, etal)
Prevent current talent from transferring out
Continue to attract high level talent

I’m not sure an Archie hire would accomplish all of this. If we choose the wrong guy, we’ll be set back 10+ years. We need to put this season in the rear-view mirror ASAP and hire someone that will have us at least in the middle of the ACC pack next season and a tourney bid.

Unless they have someone in mind that is a shoe in for the right money this search will be tough. I agree, what we have offer the top tier coaches will be a tough sale without a crazy amount of cash. Great facilities, great conference, great tradition blah blah Charlie Brown. That sales pitch doesn’t work like it used to (or did it ever for the Wolfpack?) And we normally screw everything up from a coaching search perspective. Still a funky way to start with the current fired/not fired reporting.

I bet we end up with Keats

I just know he would come here, steep learning curve perhaps but good pedigree

Turgeon was the one that admired K and Roy in the interview. He worked for Roy at one point. Marshall played us for a raise. Shaka and his agent agreed to a deal on Sunday night(he was first choice) and then backed out Monday morning. Once you think you have your guy and it comes aport you are then in a free fall in a coaching search. Keep in mind all the poeple you are talking to know each other well. Archie and any
other coach will deny and say they are not interested when their name comes up for a job when they have one. Archie has a very good senoir team that is poised to make a good run. Do not read anything into comments until th season is over. Of course we are NC State and anything could happen. Bottom line it is an atractive job much more than last time.
