Oh Crap.

Sorry Dudes.  Lots going on lately.  Yesterday, I knew this game was today.  Today, however….I blanked.

Sorry.

So this is gonna be short and sweet.  Well, short at least….

Last time out the young Pack (11-3, 0-1 ACC) got spanked pretty good in South Beach.

Tonight, they return home to face a VT squad (12-1, 1-0 ACC) which upset Duke last time out.

Also, they’re ranked #21 this week.

Also…..Buzz Williams still doesn’t have a neck.

buzz-williams

Gotta get this one.  Just saying.

Go Pack!!!!!

even at home, with VT at 31 and nc state at 61 on kenpom, quality win.

I don’t see why anyone should put stock in kenpom ratings at this stage of the season. IMO those rankings will be flipped by the end of the season, maybe there will even be a wider gap.

Nice win. I went to bed after the scolding I received for ruining the game 😉
Actually I was tired and we were up twenty so I figured we were safe.

Comments from being at the game.

It was “90’s” night. A little Hokey (Rim shot), but sort of cute. Now, no one ever used the work CUTE and Duke (Mikey) Basketball… in the same sentence without a NEGATIVE in it.

BUT, the crowd was pretty good for a 9:00 game on a school night. We had my daughter (a teacher) our our 13 YO GS, so we were concerned about the length and had a plan for a blowout.

The pregame crowd stuff really was pretty good and the fans were “loose”. NOW, the video guys had really done a great job of getting some “dancing and grooving” shots of Anya and the team. They superimposed them over some 90’s footage. Bib Boy looked cool in his shades and really loose. Maybe they worked on their moves and forgot to practice before they went to THE U. BUT, they also interposed the dancing shots into the intro.

Bottom line…..the TEAM seemed to be RELAXED. I KNOW that others had better stats, but Anya played a major role in the game. He came in early and then was in and out like a Whack a Gorilla game. He altered a LOT of shots. NOW, we did lose about 8 seconds on each possession for him to lumber down the court.

I quipped that if we took the entire bench (players, managers, coaches, consultants, trainers, whoever) and lined them up on a sideline and let them run the court…..Anya would finish next to last. Jim Harrick, who has been at EVERY game would be last as he has a hip and age problem. Rob Moxley might give Anya a run. BUT, despite the Wendy’s Guy (THERE’s the BEEF) loping up and down, he was loose and other than the untimely technical, was sort of the “fan favorite” of the team. His dribbling in and getting 2 points got the largest cheer of the evening.

Bottom line, it was really a good game from a fan’s enjoyment. The outcome, after 5 minutes, seemed pretty straightforward. YES, we did get a little sloppy at times. YES…DOUBLE YES….we were not focusing on FT’s like we should have been. BUT, we did look awesome. We were watching the Duke Mugging of GT (the team that whipped ORW’s boys) on one TV and the Pitt guys manhandling Tony Bennett’s boys. It was really a study in “WTF” of ACC. ONE did wonder WHICH VT team was going to show. Our Leave Early if Blowout had two scenario’s….We left at 5 with a 20 point margin.

Maverick looked like he wanted his starting job back. Real Monster, but he also had a couple of showboat turnovers….pretty behind your back passes MUST be completed. He did have some assists (actually has the SECOND most behind DSJ) and was rebounding. He also had the FOURTH “most minutes”. He MAY BE coming back….

Great GAME. I am not a believer in “Theme Nights”, but if it loosens up the team and gets us off to a good start, then start planning them now.

One of our group pointed out that Buzzy was MJ’s UNC Roommate. MJ was also Buzzy’s Best Man. Last night, he needed MJ back in uniform. However, if you look at the stats, VT did have 4 guys in double figures. BUT, they were lower numbers. We had 4 in doubles….and TWO with a “Double-Double”. DSJ’s numbers and show were unbelievable…..he seemed to look up at the crowd and say…”Any Pro Scouts here tonight?”

The listed attendance was 16,185. There certainly was NOT that many there. The Announcers side was SPARSE….but the crowd was IN IT….as well they should have been.

Probably have to mush over to the Nose Cone on Saturday. Looking forward to going to Reynolds tonight….Lady Pack is on fire.

Big takeaway from Coach regarding last night…

    “We played TOGETHER!”

We also had a good game plan and we stuck to it… except for the first 5 of the second half…

It’s also worth mentioning perhaps that the Zebras called an excellent game last nigt, imo…
Not too much, not too little, especially considering the talking and street stuff from Robinson and the Hokies…
    ————————

    Looking ahead to Saturday…

Our BIGBOYS will be playing eye to eye and toe to toe with equals…

Our Outside guys will have the advantage on paper, but that won’t materialize on the Court if the BIGBOYS don’t touch the ball FIRST on every set play and hold their own on the boards on both ends…

Fast break points will be more or less equal…

We are not a good run and gun team… Set Offense has to be our first priority, and discipline needs to prevail on the fast breaks.

HOLES get the home court advantage.

We looked as good last night as we did bad against Miami. I’ll hand it to everyone involved in the program that they bounced back nicely. This one was seemingly never in doubt from the opening bucket by Yurt.

I have watched both triple doubles by NC State players. DSJ had a great night and did it against a real team (no offense to Hodge, but App State isn’t exactly ACC caliber). If he does nothing else, he’s forever in the ACC history books. I think he’s just getting going though.

Anya played a great game. He was a rim enforcer, an energy guy and has a bit of a nasty streak. I love it.

Abu looked the best he has all year. He took high percentage shots, looked to dunk any time he was near the basket and was active on the boards. This is exactly what we need out you! 🙂

Let’s build this and go beat UNC. They are NOT as good as the number next to them. Yes, it will be a challenge at UNC with ACC officiating, but it is doable.

Botb – agree on the note that our bigs need to touch it first, then kick it out.

Unsung last night was a very solid job on the boards
VA Tech didn’t really crash them, but there weren’t many second shots.

We still have lots of room for improvement and we will need to play better to get a W on Saturday.

Good fun game to watch. Still, WAY too many wide open 3’s especially out of set plays. Transition defense is where simple sloppy play will surrender open 3’s but continuous great looks out of sets is ridiculous.

Oh….FCK Puke and Tippy the Tripper. K has become the arrogant pompas ass he has always been considered. Complete sell out for the W

    BOTB,

Can’t say that I totally agree with the Ref comment. They DID let them play during the First Half. There was a little “confusion” as one Ref could not figure out WHEN or IF to let one of our guys in. That broke the flow and rhythm of the game. THEN, in the second half, they tweeted more than Trump at 3:00 in the morning…

I GUESS that they were trying to keep it under control and prevent Chicago type abuse on the court. BUT, it sure did add a LOT of time to an outcome that was never in doubt. We left early and did a longer “gotta go NOW” stop and did not get any traffic. BUT, we were still running late compared to normal 8:00 games.

NOW, if you look at the Stats, the 43 Tweets is a bit above the average. Howsomever, the fact that there were only a few fouls called in the first half, then the number of fouls in the second half, due to the double bonus, certain added time. The players were also a bit more aggressive…

All in all, it was NOT the most cleanly officiated game….and the final score did reflect a lot of frustration.

One other comment, again from being there and also the stats…

Our 3 Point shooting was down about 15 – 25%. YES, Maverick and Smith and Henderson hit some real beauties….but not consistently.

Our FT shooting was also very subpar….about the same as our FT %. We were down around 15% or so from the stripe.

We DID get a lot of Rebounds and we did get a LOT of points in the paint…but had we hit more trey’s, the score would have been worse…

    ‘B’rer ‘Roo…

Didn’t have the visuals you had…

But Listening to Gary & Tony… the Hokies sounded like they wanted to be a poor imitation of West Virginia…

You know the old “if you can’t win the game, you can still win the fight” attitude….

When the game was over… I left feeling both teams were really lucky that it didn’t get really, really, ugly and the guys in stripes gott to get the credit for that.

I’m glad that someone found the real team and was able to get rid of the impostors that took their place in Miami. Hopefully we won’t see them anymore.

So, applying the transitive property, State beat VT badly. VT beat Duke fairly badly. Duke beat GT like a red-headed step child (is it still acceptable to say that?). GT beat UNC. So, there’s really no need to play Saturday’s game as State has already beaten them by an extremely large margin. Of course, that also means that Syracuse is our daddy. Not sure if I’m willing to let it go that far.

Yes packer in Russia – transitive property does have its limits. In football since ECU beat us, we beat UNC, who beat Pitt who beat Clemson

    Hate Gott?

    Nope.

His biggest issue is that his teams are not fundamentally sound. They play horrible defense and haven’t come close to playing defense since Richard Howell walked out the door.

In fact he couldnt coach Woody Durham to ask for the Hold’em Heal meal deal at Wendy’s.

StateRed44: Gott recruits better than HWNSNBN — particularly in that he recruits all positions and spaces the scholarships better. HWSNBN ran a much tighter ship and his players were better fundamentally. The differences run much deeper than just offense vs. defense.

I’d personally like a bit more focus on fundamentals and defense. The ceiling will be higher.

False dichotomy. How about Gott improve in the few areas needed to take us to the next level? That is what I would prefer.
