Gottfried tabs Pierre as new assistant coach

h/t collegechalktalk.prestosports.com

Today Mark Gottfried officially introduced Butch Pierre as his new assistant coach. Pierre previously was on Travis Ford’s staff at Oklahoma State.

“I’ve known Butch for a long time and he’s regarded as one of college basketball’s premier recruiters, but he is also a great teacher of the game who has spent a number of years around winning programs,” said Gottfried. “He brings a wealth of experience in many areas that will help us tremendously, and I’m excited to have him join our program.”

Welcome to Wolfpack Nation, Butch!

66: To be fair, many staffs in the college and NFL ranks are filled with people who were fired at their last gig. One could argue that the most successful college football head coach of the past 20 years (Pete Carroll) was unceremoniously fired from his previous gig.

I do get the point of your post. The true stars are continuing an upward trajectory. It’d be nice to have some of those on staff. Eventually though all coaches will either reach their “Peter” principle position, or they’ll settle into somewhere for the long ride.

To have not been fired at your last job at a certain level in coaching can also suggest:
    – The person is just young
    – The person has bounced around a lot
    – The person possibly hasn’t taken enough risk
    – The person was hired as a grad assistant and has stayed on with a successful staff

I think Pierre was a great hire. I’m hoping that this fixes what ails us.

Not a DOC. Don’t have a bug in the GOTT War Room.

Rob M’s issues were diabetic. How much that impacted his recruiting activity, nary a clue. BUT, having traveled domestically and internationally with several diabetics who required more than once per day injections or were on a “pump”, they were very active and the disease, other than the inconvenience and the dietary restrictions, did not slow them down.

Based on what I read, he was not in control of his insulin levels or there was a freak incident and he went into insulin shock and that manifested itself into cardiac arrest and also a stroke. He was obviously NOT 100% this season, but Jeff should have been able to fill in. He has a good way and quick wit and should be an excellent recruiter.

SO, If Pierre comes on board, he SHOULD bring in some talent or at least get us in the game.

Am REALLY disappointed if Abu follows the ill fated Lacey path. YES, he did come on strong this year. However, he was NOT, IMHO, a two and done recruit. FAR FROM IT. He only started to mature in the later half of the season. We probably would not have been as “upset” if he had come out of the box HOT this season.

BUT, again, he seems pretty intelligent and he will have to make up his mind….but there are a LOT of Orifice Blowing Sunshine Specialist out there….who want the UPFRONT fee for signing a player…..15% of something is better than 15% of nothing.

What precipitated this thread was the unexpected transfer of the twins….and THAT was something that NO ONE….their friends and relatives in Davie County had a sniff of. YES, they were valuable to us this year and they matured at different rates (as well as receeded) and we were fortunate to have them. They will be LESS sought after than any of our OTHER Gott Losses. They were NOT in the Tyler Lewis or Rodney Purvis category….far from it.

Unless they drop back a level or find some coach that is new, totally desperate, etc. (Hmmm….I think thats been said about us), then they will barely be a blip on the NCAA radar next year. Has anyone seen Calipari or the other vultures circling above the Bell Tower?

OTH, the team looks (sigh….again), YOUNG, FRAGILE and INEXPERIENCED…..like the proverbial 1900’s lass going to a big time University….We need (to paraphrase Professor Harold Hill) A Sadder, but WISER and TALENTED tranferee….and I do NOT know if we have that. Perhaps should have added TALLER.

Anya leaving….be serious…..the only reason he will leave is if they put him on a REAL diet and hire a handler to keep him from his usual 6 Big Mac Snack Attacks on the weekend when the Dietician is off duty. If he LOST about 20 more pounds and did a bunch of Yoga, he would be a force next year…

I can see why people were so up in arms. I found an area marked “pending” and there are a large number of posts there. I am going to add them back but they will probably be out of order. I am not sure why the forum software would have sent them as pending but it appeared to

Lord, please grant me an ill-fated path like Trevor Lacey, where I can earn 6 figures a year playing ball in Europe. I don’t think he left with a solid expectation that he would play in the NBA. I’m sure that was his hope, but he knew he could get a gig in Europe, get good money, get set for life, start his professional career and get experience for what he plans to do later when his playing days are over – coach.

An assistant who is fired from a school along with the rest of the staff isn’t cause for concern.

A Head Coach fired in college for performance is. Gott’s situation at ‘Bama was complicated by off-court issues. However, it wasn’t a case like Bobby Petrino or Larry Eustachy where it was clearly off-court issues.

A successful college coach who goes pro, then doesn’t find success in the pros, and then returns to the college game is NOT cause for concern.

Lutz and Pierre have excellent resumes for assistant coaches. They would probably be solid hires for mid-major and below Head Coaches.

Not sure what you are talking about here but Gott got fired MID SEASON for off the court issues. Thats pretty much the exact same if not worse then the 2 coaches listed above. Mid season. That just doesnt happen unless you really fuccccccccccgggggggggggeedddddd up.

I would also argue about the “excellent resume” remark but I am too hungover right now.

Lutz has tried like the devil to get another gig, but hasn’t been able to. It’s just been way too long (6 years since Charlotte let him go) and he is now 58.

06-07 Gott won just 7 SEC games and went to the NIT

07-08 17-16 overall, 5-11 SEC (just like our season this year)

    08-09 Fired mid season at 12-7, 2-3

Bama had seen enough and saw a sinking ship. The character issues just made it easier to justify the firing of a guy that led you to five NCAA’s and an Elite 8 appearance five years earlier.

Why not? Assistants have responsibilties, too.

That said Pierre is a fine hire. I just don’t think he’s going to be here all that long because we got issues.

I see your point but he would have been fired mid season even if he was having a good year and went to the elite 8 the prior season. You cannot sleep with your star pg’s girlfriend, get caught (on tape) screwing a coed on the golf course and get away with it.

Wulfpack – everything in context. You want to look at the assistant’s book of work. You don’t want an assistant with little exposure to winning teams who just keeps hitching himself to broken wagons. OTOH, if you see a guy who has thrived and is good at what he does but he didnt get off of the sinking ship due to principal / loyalty or something unforeseen, that’s an entirely different story.

This is true. The Politburo was tipped off this morning (and were discussing by e-mail), but didn’t have clearance to put in public domain yet.

Tis expected that Credit Union (new, not old, sadly) head man Joe Dooley will be his replacement.

This was the second staff move that I expected. We’ll see who we hire. It is critical that we get this one right.

There have been lots of rumblings that Lutz was much more involved in the day to day than Gott. If Gott is hands off and leaves more of the coaching and prep to assistants then we’d better get this one right.

I’m hoping it’s Dooley. Early, Pierre, and Dooley would give us three of the top recruiters in the country. Lutz is a great Xs and Os guy, but we need desperately need to upgrade the talent on the floor. He’s also a fanatic about good defense, which we can obviously use.

of course, similar things (defensive stickler) were said about Lutz…

^If Lutz is a great Xs and Os guy, and especially if Gott left a lot of “day to day” stuff to him, how come we weren’t better at Xs and Os? I like and respect Lutz, but I have felt for quite some time that we would better off turning over his specific assistant coach position.

Makes for a totally new team next year. Two new coaches and a completely different roster, with or without Abu. Breaking in a freshman PG that will have the weight of the world on his shoulders. It’s why I can’t understand how some are saying we are a bubble/tourney team. Based on what? We weren’t even close to that this year with an All ACC MVP-caliber point guard (and Abu and the twins). Maybe all the change will be good. But the point is – who really knows?

I wouldn’t blame Lutz, and to BJD’s point, maybe Dooley won’t make a big impact defensively. At the end of the day the HC sets the tone, and if he would rather stress offense first, there’s not a lot the assistants can do about it.

I just don’t see it. You guys use the term, rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. IMHO that analogy has never been more apropos than discussing the turnover with our assistant basketball coaches.

It’s like betting your last $1,000 in one bet at the roulette table when you owe $20,000 to Eddie the Weasel and Fat Tony.

Well, if Dooley leaves a HC gig at a place he made the tourney, it would seem that there is gonna be more than just next year, pretty much no matter what. No way a guy comes to do a 1 year stint knowing the current roster situation. In fact, since he’s seriously considering it, I’d say Gott has bare minimum 2 years (according to Yow and probably higher up).

A part of it is money. He’s making about $250K right now and would double that here.

I’m just wondering what the backstory to all this is. Why is Lutz leaving? His own choice? And if so, why go to become an assistant at another ACC school? Something isn’t adding up.
