Game Thread: Pack Football in Tallahassee

Wolfpack Football (6-3, 2-3 ACC) hits the road today for the last time in the ’15 regular season as they travel to Doak Campbell Stadium to take on the #19 Florida State Seminoles (7-2, 5-2 ACC).

The Pack is coming off a big bounce back win at Boston College last week, while the ‘Noles will try to bounce back vs the Pack after dropping one at Death Valley last week.  A loss which put the nails in the coffin of their ’15 ACC Title hopes.

Can the Wolfpack catch the ‘Noles still reeling?  Or will the ‘Noles come out intent to prove that even sans Famous Jameis they are a force to be reckoned with?

Last year, in case you’ve forgotten…..

A win at FSU would give the Pack a fifth road win, the most since 1957.  It would also go a long way toward gaining some respectability among the great unwashed.

Not to mention take away the bad taste, at least to a degree, that teh Bill and Mary provided last night.

Alls I can say is I’ve already got my baseball tix ordered.

But first things first.  Let the push to Charlotte continue….

Once again, it’s the coveted 12:30pm slot.  (/sarcasm)

Wolfpack Seeks Fifth Road Win at FSU (GoPack.com)

RALEIGH, N.C. – The year 1957 was a very good one for NC State football. In a season that ended with the school’s first ACC Championship, star tailback Dick Christy earned legendary status by scoring all of the Wolfpack’s points in the clincher, a season-ending 29-26 triumph at South Carolina. The dramatic victory over the Gamecocks also gave the Pack its fifth road win that year, something no other NC State team has accomplished since.

Flash forward to 2015.

When the Pack plays its final road game of the season on Saturday, NC State (6-3, 2-3) will be trying to match the famed 1957 team when it shoots for its fifth win in hostile territory. Standing in the way will be 19th ranked Florida State (7-2, 5-2).

The Wolfpack and Seminoles are slated to kick things off from Doak Campbell Stadium at 12:30 p.m.

NC State owns road wins at Old Dominion, South Alabama, Wake Forest and Boston College this season with the lone defeat coming at Virginia Tech.

“I challenged the players,” said State head coach Dave Doeren. “We could be tied with the winningest road team in NC State history if we can win this game. To me that’s what this is all about, it’s all about how can you create history and leave a legacy. We’re fighting to get to better status than we were a year ago, so winning this game would give us the right to say we’re tied as the winningest road team in NC State history. I think they’re excited about that challenge.”

Game Notes

I have to admit that I feel oddly confident about today’s game.  I’m not saying that I think we’ll win, but I do think we’ll show up and at least give as good as we get.

And also maybe win.

Or perhaps after losing last night’s basketball opener at home to Bill and Mary, there’s little left to fear in a road loss to FSU in football.

What could go wrong???

Teams should pay State for finding their “New” starting qb. Last year at Clemson, we knock out their starting qb, in comes freshman backup Watkins and a star is born. Out goes Colson, in comes Maquire and a new starter is exposed for FSU. Just can’t figure out the State curse of providing opposing teams little unknown players with career and record breaking game performances. Damn I hope show up Thanksgiving or WTNY again and again.

Does the bass team compete tomorrow? If not gonna be hard to show my face after two great Wolfpack performances so far this weekend.

If the Jacoby we saw in the second half plays on Sundays next year, it will be with the neighborhood kids in the backyard..

I personally never thought of JB as a Sunday caliber QB. I think some of the nuances of the game escape him a lot of the time. Not to mention his recurring accuracy issues. Guess time will tell.

I honest to God wish I knew what we have in coach DD. A part of me sees a tireless recruiter who is making waves then the realist sees the rankings. A part of me sees the moments of a top flight defense and offense and then I see multiple possessions of just utter brain farts. I think in a nutshell DD is probably a good coach but is way too green for a major p-5 conference and by the time he learns he may be too late. Going 3-5 again this year doesnt make 2016 any easier on him. He desperately needs that signature win and this was his last opportunity for it unless he can knock UNC off.

Like I ask of Gott, is giving extensions just part of the collegiate game right now or did Yow jump the gun?

If McClendon is not better than Brissett at this point, what do we have in a quarterback next year? Brissett is not that good and average at best. I say play him next week at home versus Syracuse. Carolina game is looking scary.

this sums up my feelings pretty well, but I’m with you in that it’s hard to really get a good grasp at the moment. He really ticked me off that first year he called out our fans for not being there in the 3rd quarter against some piss ant team.

Missed our deep passes down the field today. I am sure we coulda found someone open. Kept running up the middle, and gaining nothing. Wasted downs. We should have passed more, as in the last drive. Just can’t figure why we thought we were gonna score up the middle, with FSU team jamming it up. Woulda tried the outside. But then again we were supposed to lose. Have to win our last 2 home games, and get a nice bowl to play in.

I’m confident that if the staff thought McClendon would give us a better chance to win, he’d be on the field.

Does the term “learning curve” escape some of you?

I’d love to have a little baggie full of some of what some of y’all be smoking.

Been a PACK fan since the 50s. Today like many others pissed me off. My morale plunged because: first series major turnover; QB draw and lose a couple of yards. WTF. Why not twist the dagger??? Last series first half; WTF drop our heads and walk off the field with time for at least 3 plays??? Where is the dagger? 2nd qtr major turnover; QB draw and gain 1. WTF. Does anyone recognize we need to start developing a QB??? We need to mhit often and hard. Another major let down for me. When will it end?

If the spread was your interest, was there any doubt in your mind that our last play was JB up the middle? I’m a DD fan, very much so. The glass is half full, I think. That said, I hate what seems to be a wasted timeout, especially in the second half, and we wasted one early in the second half when they were in a fourth and short, I believe. Like I said, if the spread mattered to you, you hate the wasted timeout, but what if the game was decided by that last play? That erstwhile timeout would have been convenient. I hate a wasted second half timeout. They are money.

Unfortunately Pack1969E we have seen same thing for the past 45 plus years and it’s not going to change for us.

OK. As much as it really doesn’t matter…

JB called his own number on the finale.
    98.5% sure. Me…meh. I woulda spiked.

Onward to 8 plus 1. Boone might have killed his Achilles, BTW. Hope for hammy, but not sure.

Ya know…? The Hand of God has not been a righteous one so far. Shad,Matty D; etc.

Maybe he just be settin’ the table for Thanksgiving.

wolf71 you might be right. But I still have wonderful memories. 1967 Earle took the white shoes boys to Houston, #1. We beat them. My wife and I jumped on my Honda 90 and headed from McKimmon Village to Hillsboro Street. By the time we reached PR I had 5 people hanging on the back. I pulled over at the Velvet Cloak, unloaded, and we marched to the Capitol. We went to #2 or #3 in the nation. Bad luck hit us and we lost to Penn State and we went down to Clemson and lost. Beat Georgia in the Liberty Bowl. If only we could do it again…

Think if the coach is gonna be around, he needs to ask some accountability of his supporting cast. The OC, and DC, leave me scratching my head more than I care to. We are always determined to run it up the middle, pretty much every first down, even if it ain’t working. Defense burned too many times on 3rd down conversions. Then again we are young, but the coaches don’t have that excuse. And JB was just plain bad in the second half, minus the last drive. Too late to find his accuracy then.
