NC State @ BC

Hi all – forgive me but I’m posting the game thread the night before this time around … Not sure when I’d have time to post a game thread tomorrow (Saturday) morning, plus Premier BJD has expressed reservations about opening game threads – so I figured I’d go ahead and get this one up 🙂 . I could have used the ‘publish timer’, but who am I to deny those who are hype about State playing BC and want to post thoughts tonight? Onward Red Army!

Not sure about you, but I’m still a bit hungover with my head still in the clouds after Tuesday night. As fans, we can afford that luxury – the team, not so much. Thankfully, Coach Gottfried and the players have expressed that they know what’s at stake with the BC game. This is a business trip. While recent ‘next game’ results are decidedly not in the Pack’s favor after beating either Duke or the Cheats (they’re so bad I won’t state them here), there are some other factors that do weigh positively in our players’ favor.

One of those factors is that this team has already experienced what can happen after beating a top ranked foe, namely Duke, earlier this season. Several State players expressed that exact sentiment after the win over the Cheats on Tuesday night. They know the kind of focus and composure that is necessary in order to hopefully avoid a ‘letdown’ performance. They also know that Tuesday night’s win is now firmly in the past, and a new challenge awaits. It’s one of those ‘thin line’ differences between consistent championship level Top 15 teams and those programs and teams that only catch lightning in a bottle now and then. State has always had the talent to win this season – some of it new and raw – but winning talent nonetheless. A number of State’s losses have been greatly aided by the mental/psychological side of the equation, leading to seeming inconsistency. That’s hopefully in the past for this season.

Another factor playing in State’s favor as they move forward is that this team is this team … it’s not the team from a decade ago, or even last season’s team. As they proved on Tuesday night, past results and trends are not necessarily indicative of current or future results. It’s like a new spin of the roulette wheel, just because you’ve hit black or green 11 straight times doesn’t mean you won’t hit red on the 12th spin. Most Pack players had no idea about any ‘losing streak’ in the Cheat Dome – they just went out and won. What this team’s players know is that they had a collective letdown after defeating Duke, and they know now to be focused from here out. To hell with any past results of other teams – those are completely irrelevant to this team.

All that said, even with great focus at 12 pm Saturday there are other challenges this game presents. One is that the Conte Forum is likely to be a near dead arena. It doesn’t matter who you are, it can be tough to generate energy for a noon start in a moribund setting. Thankfully, this is just as likely to potentially impact BC as it is the Pack.

The other challenge is the BC team itself. It’s been a tough season for the Eagles under first year coach Jim Christian. They’ve won only one league game to this point, and are on a prolonged losing skid. Still, they’ve been competitive in a number of their games and they do own a nice early season win over a solid Providence squad. Olivier Hanlan has been tearing it up in league play, and scored 39 in BC’s last contest – a 71-65 loss at Pitt.

Bottom line: Challenges aside, as in almost all games this team will play – if State can come out and play poised and determined they stand a very good chance of winning.

Clemson got up on GT about 30-2. It is now tied at 60.

18 shots by Turner. 14 3’s…You have to be kidding me…

That’s disgusting. Says a lot about no adjustments from the sideline.

How many games have been played this year? Enough. This is not on the coach, this is on the players for coming out flat. Their own mentality, after a big win over unc. Lacey, Turner, Barber, our big scorers just not in it today, and when they are not, we are not, spelling another loss. Tis getting old. We better win the last two. or we are out of the dance.

^mak, I beg to differ. Totally on coaches. Preparation, execution, and game management completely lacking today.

I think as a player, these results have to be confusing. You wonder why you hear the same old coach speak and player babble: “we didn’t have enough energy,” “we’ve got to play for 40 minutes,” “we just couldn’t known down shots,” yada, yada…BS. If this is what your coach is selling, and accepting, then you’re going to continue to see plenty of bed crappings.

I don’t always beat on coaches but when I do, it’s the assistant coaches!!

I agree about an earlier post regarding more excitement from Gott…..but maybe that’s just what inspired me?

Gottfried on the postgame radio defending the jumpshots. I’m shocked by this.

He knows we didn’t have energy, knows we were leaving shots short – yet we kept doing it. I simply do not understand the logic of this.

Tired and no energy is not an excuse.

I agree. When you look at Gott’s career at Bama and so far at State, you see a team that consistently defends well, rebounds well and is rarely on the bubble.

I don’t know why this team is so different than his others.

The starting 5 should have watched the game from the bench. They brought no fire, hustle, intensity at all. Even if the shots aren’t falling there is no excuse for that wet defensive turd that state leaked out all over the floor in Boston.

Right now, our bigs just clog up space on offense. It was clear early in the year, that if we were to continue the plodding style of play on offense, to continue trying to run some version of the UCLA high post, we’d be forced to choose between interior players who were deficient on defense or offense, or both. WE’ve been an outside-in team pretty much all year, so no suprises on the jumpshots. Shot selection for Lacy and Turner is still a problem. Similar to TOB, we’re trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Defensively, same old same old.

Said it all year, even when he was struggling, Barber needs more shots, not less. OUr best offense is him creating off the dribble, spacing, and the bigs getting the heck out of the way. Defensively, there is no cure this late. Just pray for off nights for the opposition, or good matchups, or a combo of both.

Honestly….did anyone really expect anything different today? Someone said were were 1-14 after beating Duke/UNC….we are actually 1-19 overall after a big win over the Blues. No performance, no defense, no show….typical NC State basketball after a big win. I told my better half wish had not made such a big deal with the campus celebration over the win against Cheats….we can’t handle success or admiration.
Today is why I try and stay grounded with NC State basketball…knew it was coming. What pisses me off is that you don’t see good programs, not necessary good teams, tank like NC State does after a big win. Or a big loss. You never see the Blues or most other teams in ACC do this. Course, most teams don’t get so emotional over beating a team like UNC unless you are Clemson.
Think about it….we just lost to the worst team in the ACC and perhaps D1 knowing we need to win to make the Dance. If the kids can’t get up for this type game or atmosphere, then not sure if its on the staff or kids. And don’t give me this “dealing with 18 yr old” crap…we are almost 30 games into the season with so much on the line. We are NC State.

Yea but Bass – how come some 18 year olds give consistent effort and others do not?

Here’s a question: Give Gott UVa’s roster – what do you think the results are?
Give Gott Duke’s roster – what do you think the results are?
OTOH, I bet his results at Wake or GaTech or BC would have been better than what they have had.

He is a good coach. He’s not a great one. As much as it makes us pull our hair out – he’s been pretty consistent in Raleigh and Bama.

^That’s fine overall, but after the 10:00 mark of this game it was clearly time to attempt to generate energy. Press, sub, attack the basket. If you’re not going to play any defense and they’re not able to hit open shots – and you know this – then why not adjust? I’ll be the first to admit that I know little and that all is not clear from the couch, but damn.

If you know that they players have no energy and are heavy-legged (Gott’s words) – then why keep doing what is clearly failing? Open shots are great, but you can’t say ‘the players were dead and heavy-legged and leaving shots short’ and have one guy shoot 14 threes – open or otherwise. Madness. It was as if we thought we had a secret bag of pixie dust to spread around and then all of a sudden we’d start playing D and hitting shots.

    I now understand. Seriously.

Until Gott changes himself (and I’m not talking coaching), his teams will continue to rise to the challenge when facing adversity, but continue to fail miserably in the midst of success. Think about it. If you know Gott’s history, and watched the u*nc post game, you’ll get it.

It won’t change. Accept the roller coaster. Enjoy the highs, expect the lows. Beat’s the helloutta everything we’ve had since V.

Football, on the other hand, is different. DD will quench your thirst for excellence and consistency.

^I think there’s merit to this. There’s a reason the cliche/saying ‘Teams adopt the personality of their coach’ exists.

Also agree totally about ‘best since V’.
