NC State 24 Georgia Southern 23 [Updated 8/31]

The following from the N&O about sums it up:

Just when it looked like N.C. State was headed towards a ninth straight loss, Brissett and the Wolfpack offense found another gear for its first win since last September.

Down 17-3 at the half and 20-10 to start the fourth quarter, the Wolfpack took its only lead of the game on Brissett’s 35-yard touchdown pass to running back Matt Dayes with 1:37 left in the game.

Brissett also hit sophomore receiver Bra’Lon Cherry for a pair of touchdowns in the second half and N.C. State’s defense, despite giving up 246 yards on the ground, came up with a big turnover that aided the fourth-quarter comeback.

It was Brissett who made the difference in the second half after a sluggish start. He was 18-for-23 for 213 yards with three touchdowns in the second half, compared to 10-for- 17 for 78 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Brissett wasn’t interested in taking any of the credit for the win, though. He was quick to praise his offensive line, which didn’t give up a sack in the second half, the defense, running back Shad Thornton (10 carries, 73 yards) and receiver Bo Hines (nine catches, 85 yards).

[snip]

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Eagles led 20-10 and then held the Wolfpack on fourth-and-1 from the 9-yard line.

Quarterback Kevin Ellison, who ran for 116 yards and threw for 184, led the Eagles down to the Wolfpack 1-yard line on the subsequent drive. On second-and-goal from the 1, Ellison lost his footing and then lost the ball. N.C. State defensive tackle Monty Nelson came out of the pile with the ball.

Brissett led a 12-play, 99-yard drive to cut the Eagles’ lead to 20-17. Brissett completed six passes on the drive, including three to Hines, before finding Cherry wide open in the middle of the field for an 11-yard score.

The Eagles responded with a quick drive into Wolfpack territory but with Ellison shaken up after a 52-yard run, they had to settle for a 31-yard field goal and a 23-17 lead with 3:35 to play.

Brissett went 8-for- 9 on the final drive and hit Dayes down the right sideline for the game-winning score. Last year, with Brissett sitting out after transferring from Florida, that might have ended with a turnover and a loss but not with Brissett.

My opinion on Doeren, 13 games in: we should re-hire TOB just so we could fire him again.

The talent deficieny isn’t on Doeren (yet).

Certainly not, his job is to give the players that he does have the best opportunity to win.We will hae a better idea just how much talent he will need to win when this year is in the books.

He did a great job of recruiting last year but I believe this class is rated low so far…this isn’t a knock on kids who have committed but rather some of the misses we have had.

We need some running backs from THIS (is OUR) state. Now, I like Shad and I like Dayes and I’m gonna love Samuels, but we don’t even exist to the Gurleys, Marshalls, Fraziers. Then there’s another wave of home grown carriers that we’re lucky to get a visit out of.

Gimmie one out of Hines, Gallaspy, Love, and Sharpe (cross him off the list) and I’ll be happy.

We were 20.5 point favorites. Anyone who spins this game into a positive is….well it’s that mindset that has in part allowed State leadership to let the athletics program muddle along insignificantly for decades.

This was an atrocious performance. We can HOPE its an aberration but this is quite frightening to see our defense gashed by a HUGE underdog. I don’t think any sweeping conclusions can be drawn but the takeaway is this game is a huge red flag. Whatever your preseason win/loss estimate was…you subtract a game or two.

Hey look, it’s Mr Happy!… (No, not Mr Hanky)

We were 20.5 point favorites. Anyone who spins this game into a positive is….

Right, because the line setters know everything and never get it wrong.

    This was an atrocious performance

No, it wasn’t. Wasn’t great, but it was far from atrocious. Actually, because of the way it all played out, Saturday’s game was a net positive. And those paying attention would have noted that most (if not all) of the glaring and costly errors were made by young players on the front side of a steep learning curve.

But we all know you’ve been full of piss and vinegar for quite a while now, so keep enjoying life and sending us your ‘sunshine’.

Going into the game, I thought the Wolfpack was a 5-7 win team in 2014. Saturday’s performance changed nothing. If anything, I was encouraged, all things considered.

Favorites in the first 4, little to zero chance against FSU, L’ville, and Clemson, probable favorites against Wake and maybe BC, various levels of ‘reasonable’ chances of victory against the rest.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the Vegas lines just created such that it influences the betting to be a 50-50 split between the teams to maximize the bookies profit?

Yes. It is a marketing tool. But, I’ve gone down this same road more than once.

I usually do well on the 1st week taking dogs getting ridiculous points.

It doesn’t always matter what Vegas thinks. It’s what Las Vegas thinks the betting public thinks.

^ ‘Dog beat me to it. Not based on the relative strengths and matchups of two teams, but the public perception of the same.

If this audience was an accurate indicator, the general public, like ’44, where clueless to the relative strengths and matchup issues going into the GSU game.

We got a ‘W’, some galvanized team building, and early prep for GT. A win win win.

If we could go back in time, I have no doubts, after Rivers first game, requiring a double OT win over Arkansas State, we probably had the same negative comments about that team, and probably some toward Rivers. But they finished 8-4. Hopefully the team doesn’t read this negativity toward them and their coach, unless of course it inspires them to prove the doubters wrong. Go Pack! Until I see otherwise I believe in them.

That was the first game for Rivers, Amato, and Chow. They got a standing ovation after the first play from scrimmage – an incomplete (but deep) pass.

I remenber only optimism and excitement from the fan base after the game. But like that 1st offensive play, I think it was commentary on the previous staff as much as it was on Amato, Chow, and Rivers.

No one was upset with Rivers. He was a true freshman playing in his first game and had just thrown for 400 yds and I think 4 or 5 TDs. All this while barking at seniors and being the clear leader of the team.

I look at Brissett, much like a freshmen, since it has been 2 years since playing in a real game situation. He showed lots of promise, 2 long passes to open recievers for sure scores, just a bit too long with the passes, but still early in the game, then seemed to settle down in the second half, and led the team back from what looked to be a loss. I am sure DD will look at game film and work on our mistakes, and we will come out even better against ODU.

It would be nice if this season turned out like amato’s 1st or moc’s 2nd to last where we eaked out a close win against underdog’s….as for Vegas lines, over time they only show how a team does vs. expectations. In theory, eventually they will include a coach’s strength/weaknesses.

Way too early to see what will happen with season… Last year the high point of the year was the Clemson game. A couple of plays can make a huge difference in a season. In amato’s first year, the team’s built confidence over the year by winning some close games. This team will lose to FSU, Clemson and Louisville… We’ll beat Wake. We will have a shot in the other 4 conference games, especially if we can gain some confidence. We won’t win all 4 but we could 3-1 in them with some good breaks and confidence. A 3-5 mark would be solid progress.

I’m not a betting man, but do pay attention. And the lines are scary accurate the majority of the time.

There’s also a f-ckton more variance in college lines than NFL lines. Performance varies much more, and you simply knows less what to expect going into Week 1.

When I looked up and down all the NFL Week 1 lines, all I could come up with was “yeah, that looks about right.”

Because we KNOW what the roster situation is like, I thought it was the easiest money in the world to take GS and the points. And that shouldn’t be an indictment of Doeren (who still has very little of HIS talent in the pipeline), or Brissett (who endured a great deal of adversity and persevered).

“He did a great job of recruiting last year but I believe this class is rated low so far…this isn’t a knock on kids who have committed but rather some of the misses we have had.”

That is correct. What should be noted is the ratings are partially based on number of commits. At this time we are low on numbers. We ARE in the running for about 10 very good players. Should we be fortunate enough to land some of these, we will rise in the ratings. Related but not pertinent to our recruiting rating, we were second choice on about a half dozen guys who choose to go elsewhere. Not bad for a new coach in the area and a team that did not win but 3 games. I say the future is looking up.

About “the line” not making excuses for our play but just to point out the line may have been closer than it appears, We missed on 2 sure touchdown throws (open in the end zone) and dropped an easy interception. Also our LB was tackled from behind — clearly held — as he just missed the tackle on one of their long runs for TD. My point being the breaks of the game greatly contributed to the closeness of the score.

Really, I was out of town but had the ipad with me and I was surrounded by the orange county folks. It was unbearable. So much so that when we scored with 1:37 left I just walked away from them. No need for me to comment we stunk. Lets hope we do not reek the rest of the year and at least get an ACC win. Oh and by the way as always I love the Pack…so please do not take me or my comments personal.

Why the f#ck didn’t you walk away at 12:30?

“The goal this year is to not dig this program into a deeper hole. Losing to no-name teams is terrible for recruiting. If you schedule cupcakes you better beat them. The jury is still out on DD but he continues to underwhelm.”

So who said the goal this year was to not dig this program into a deeper hole? The only person I’ve heard say that is punkalum44. The coaches and players are working their tails off — the coaches recruiting and the players in the weight room — to build a foundation for this program to grow on.

This “no-name cupcake” won 6 National Championships before moving to the FBS division. They also beat Florida of the SEC last year. Last year they averaged 360 yds rushing and rushed for over 400 against UF. It’s best to judge football teams by their accomplishments rather than by their name.

Florida was not good last year. Their offensive and defensive rankings both putrid. Not just in the SEC, but nationally.

Ga Southern was also very avergage in their conference.

It was a win. We needed it. But don’t make it out to be something it wasn’t.

Florida didn’t do well last year, but most every game they lost, was a close loss, and winnable. Guess we will see what GS does this week and the rest of season, as well as seeing if we continue to get better. I will be the optimist. Even if it was GS, I have seen our teams get down like we did in that game, and quit. We didn’t. I give the team credit for that. We finished a game, and all the players recognized that fact. Go Pack!

Not me. I was too depressed to watch the Virginia game in TOB’s last year!

Speaking of recruiting, in what is definitely some sweet tasting schadenfreude, it seems that Kyrin Priester has been kicked off the Clemson team by coach Dabo due to “an attitude that is not acceptable to our standards.” Said Swinney, “Just a poor attitude. No respect for authority.” Recall that Priester gave State a verbal, flipped to Clemson, and verbally trashed State saying; “I believe Clemson has better coaching than N.C. State, and I’ll get more exposure there. Clemson is better than N.C.State. That’s point blank, period.” The former four star also did not qualify academically last year, and had to attend Fork Union Military Academy. I thought you were supposed to learn a bit about respecting authority at a military academy. I guess times have indeed changed. I wander where the schmuck will get more “exposure” now.

Agreed Wulfpack. Just countering the stupid notion that GSU were ‘no-name cupcakes.’ With us being 3-9 you could say that GSU was scheduling ‘name cupcakes.’

Cowdog…no worries. It was courage that kept me there. No really, I was working and every now and then they would call at me. But I took courage and it paid off because when I walked away with the 1:37 left and we had the winning score, they were quieted and dumbfounded (a short trip for them). Sorry I made you cuss, please forgive me.
