#7 NC STATE vs #3 DUKE Preview (ACC Tournament Edition)

Time: 3:30-ish
TV: ACCN, ESPN

Recap of Last Night

Review
January 18th, 2014 (Durham, NC)
Duke 95
NC State 60

Nothing went right. I mean absolutely nothing. Even Buckets was just Average. It’s pretty simple, everything the Pack did in the first game, do the opposite.

ADVANTAGES

PREDICTION
KenPom likes Duke by 9, Vegas opened at Duke -10.

TJ is going to get tired today from carrying the heavy workload. I also think it’ll be a 5-on-8 game if it’s even close. The Pack used up all it’s magic on the final 6 shots last night and the run comes to an end today. Yes I’m being negative, it’s worked for the Pack so far.

One Loss become Two Losses (the Hangover Effect).

The Miami and Clemson losses hurt. We got blown out in both. It is understandable following the devestating losses to Cuse and UNC. Had we won one of those (Cuse or UNC) I think we are in. Sucks.

Yes a marquee win is worth much more than a hangover loss when it comes to the bubble. If State doesn’t lose to NCCU, WF, and Miami then they are sweating it tomorrow but they’ll be sweating. If State won either the first SU or UNC then then they would be sweating but feeling better than the previous example.

I don’t like the ACC’s chances in the big dance. UVA plays defense good enough to stay in games, but they’ll go 4-5 minutes without scoring. In the dance, somebody gets hot and you’re done when you can’t score. Sadly, I think UNC problably has the most success depending on matchups.

Proud of our boys. ^ Definitely in if we had won at Cuse or against the Holes in PNC. History will remember this year as one of “what ifs.” Still holding out hopes that TJW will come back to claim glory for NC State, first marquee guy we’ve had in a while who I truly feel bleeds red and white and with the pedigree to boot. I think he should have the same mentality as far as Paige; it would be a mistake for Paige to go as Paige still has things to work on (putting on weight). TJ has got to improve his outside shot and he could improve his bball IQ, stop with the ticky tacky reach in fouls. Nevertheless, if he does leave, hats off to him. Future ACC Legend.

Certainly can’t fault the effort that they team gave today. If they do end up going to the NIT, I hope they give it everything they’ve GOTT. This team is good enough to bring home an NIT title. While some fans may not think too much of that, I’d really like to see our basketball program hang a new championship banner, even if it is just an NIT championship.

It’s been way too long since the ’87 ACC title.

Thought the same thing today. We are inching toward 30 years. 30 freaking years. In just the past couple we’ve seen FSU, Miami and now UVA find success. It really makes you wonder.

we needed to counter punch Coach K and crew in the second, and we didn’t.

    Fatigue. Pure and simple.

Turner and Warren were missing shots they were making on Thursday, in the second half.

Finally on the RPI effect of the Duke loss…

State is about 0.001 behind #52 SMU, 0.003 behind #51 Xavier, 0.005 behind #50 Kansas St., and 0.006 behind #49 Providence.

So what does that all mean? Basically with SMU, Xavier, and KSU no longer playing their value won’t budge. Providence plays #7 RPI Creighton so even a loss shouldn’t effect them any differently than State losing to #8 Duke. Maybe State swaps with SMU but that’s about all I see and that’s assuming no one leaps us from behind.

Again, at this point of the season State need another Signature win and with that the RPI would have improved but the Signature win against a Top 25 team is more valuable to the selection committee than an increase of 5-10 spots in the RPI ranking that would have accompanied it.

Absolutely give the kids credit for today’s effort. There aren’t many teams with the firepower to keep up with Duke. That said, I’m pretty sure we’re NIT-bound. I’d really like to see what this team could be with a junior year from Buckets to go along with more experience from this year’s freshmen, but that’s another thing I’m not optimistic about.

Maybe, only wishing here, Buckets only test the waters and gets feedback saying that with the other players entering the draft he’d be a late first round pick. Maybe that would be enough for him to return but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that to happen.

State had 3 people step up to carry us offensively, Duke had 4. Need more scorers.

Rodney Hood is a goon….He forechecked TJ to the head twice before he was penalized for checking him into the boards when TJ wanted the puck, in the first half…And the Rat complained to the refs..he spends more time talking to the refs than he does his team..

I’m pretty sure i speak for most everyone here when I say how proud I am of this year’s team. Not the most talented we’ve had but they played their hearts out. Coach Gott had his best year coaching since he’s been here. He put us in a position to win in most all our games. Just a few plays short of the Big Dance.

Yup. Feel the same way. I was impressed how much we improved individually and team-wise through the season. Just a few weeks ago I felt there was no way we were an NCAA-caliber team. Now I think we are definitely good enough, although it’s highly unlikely we’ll get a bid. Vandy has been a revelation. He’s not an all-star but how many of us here actually expected him to contribute this year? It’s really too bad he didn’t play much before this year, it would have been nice to have his end-of-year development/capabilities much earlier in this season. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

No one to blame for that but Vandy. We never needed much out of him, just to be a space eater who isn’t a TOTAL liability on Offense

Just an aside, I Didn’t mean for the previous comment to sound like I was bashing Vandy. Just commenting on the above post.
We played well towards the end of the yr. but the losses to SU and UNC hurt. Those are games tournament teams find a way to win

We are inching toward 30 years. 30 freaking years. In just the past couple we’ve seen FSU, Miami and now UVA find success. It really makes you wonder.

    We’re getting there, as well.

One of the things we’ve lacked, in the last 15 years is consistency in keeping recruiting classes together. Coaches have ridden one or two good classes for all their worth, while having terrible years in between.

    The Hodge class was good.

The next year was O’Donnell, IIRC and then a couple of guys who transferred and then the Grant class and then, I think, the Costner, McCauley, Fells class.

Coaching change and you get Horner the next year, and Hickson, Smith, Johny Thomas, Javi, et. al. the year after that. You follow it up with Mays and CJW.

Gott’s success was built on the backs of the next two recruiting classes by Sid, the Wood, Howell, Vandy, Painter class and the Brown, Leslie class.

You end up with a coaching change and have a couple of guys recruited by Sid – Raymond and Harris – who transfer.

With last year’s class of Warren and Lewis, plus this year’s class and next year’s class, we finally have three years of solid recruiting taking the court next year. Even with the Purvis transfer and if Warren goes pro, that’s the sort of consistency we’ve lacked and one reason we’ve sputtered so badly.

To recap the impact of the last bunch of recruits has been:

2001: Good class (in all honesty program changing, from where we were the prior decade).
    2002: Zero impact
    2003: Zero Impact
    2004: Good class
    2005: Good class
    2006: Horner worked hard
2007: Got bodies into the program (Smith was a good player).
    2008: CJW worked hard
    2009: Good class
    2010: Good class
    2011: Zero
    2012: Good class
    2013: Good class
2014: Good in-coming class (as far as anyone can tell).

I think 3 games in 3 days, compared to 2 for duke, took its toll in the second half, and we just ran out of gas. But preseason predictions never even had us having a chance of doing what we did. Lose 4 of 5 starters, and knocking at the door of NCAA tourney. Great job team. Quite proud of the effort. Hope Warren comes back next year, to help improve the team and its ability to win big games.

A few things that I’m feeling good about from the recent play of our team:

    1. I see a team that seems to like each other with no drama.

    2. It does seem like we have improved (although slightly) on the defensive end of the court.

    3. CAT is gaining some confidence and staying in control better.

    4. Lewis seems to be a tad more willing to take shots.

    5. Our front court bigs are actually pretty good when they are motivated.

Are there huge holes of mistakes and bad decisions still being made? Yes, but they are improving on those slowly.

I must say the GOTT really impressed me with his fire and enthusiasm in the Tournament. I do think his sub patterns are weird and defense is still weak overall. However, he really wanted to win and it showed. He looked as excited as he did his 1st year here. All I am saying is it was nice to see emotion from him again (I think he has been pretty calm the past two years). As Wolfpack fans this is what we want to see from a coach (besides winning of course). Just a few moments of passion from a coach goes a looooooong way in Raleigh.
