#7 NC STATE vs #10 MIAMI PREVIEW (ACC Tournament Edition)

Time: 7:00
TV: ESPN
Announcers: Dan Shulman, Sean Farnham

Survive and Advance. Yes, it’s that time of year again, Tournament Time, where you are literally taking it one game at a time. If the Pack are going to have even an extreme long shot chance of making the NCAA Tournament then it all begins here and they have to do it against a team they haven’t played very well against this season.

Recap of both games this season…

Feb. 8th, 2014 (Coral Gables, FL)
NC State 56
Miami 55

The Pack did not play it’s best this day on offense where everything was brought to a stop by the grind it out, slug fest of slow ball. The Pack was also still trying to figure out zone defenses at the time and how to score against them. Luckily for them the Hurricanes were their normal, awful selves on offense. The only thing that kept Miami in this game to the end was the Pack’s inability (all season) to get a defensive rebound, giving the Canes a second chance shot every other trip down the court. The Pack walked out with a victory but for some unexplained reason the refs swallowed the whistle on the final 3/4 court shot when Kyle Washington thought he was playing football and tackled the shooter.

March 1st, 2014 (Raleigh, NC)
Miami 85
NC State 70

The Hangover Part II. The Pack was coming off a heartbreaking loss to rival U*NC and looked uninterested most of the game, at least on defense. The Pack played Matador defense to perfection allowing Miami to score at will and do it efficiently. Even when the Canes missed they were likely to get a second chance at it. The Pack did finally wake up and fight back to tie the game but something happened with about 6 minutes left in the game, the Pack up and quit. I can’t explain it except for the fact this is the weakest team mentally that I can recall in many years.

ADVANTAGE

So what can we expect from today’s game? Well if the refs call a tight game then that should put Miami in serious foul trouble outside of Brown. It also means Vandenberg will go to the bench early as well as Washington. If not then who knows how the game will play out, there’s a certain amount of pressure on the Pack that isn’t on the Canes and we have seen this team, outside of Warren, can’t handle any pressure at all. Now there isn’t a lot of pressure since this is an NIT bound team trying to somehow win enough to make the NCAAT so maybe the pressure is small enough now they’ll play loose. Who knows, I’ve given up trying to figure out this team beyond Warren.

Prediction
I’ve had a bad feeling about this game since the seedings were decided. I’ll go with my usual negativity here and say Gottfried gets outcoached and the Pack gets out of Greensboro in a hurry.

Which is why Cat Barber is the key to victory.

That is why Gott needs to have Cat and Lewis in the game at the same time at crucial times of the game.

Again I will ask this question? Maybe there is no telling how. But, is there a chance Karl Hess refs our game tonight?

I live about 5 miles south of the coliseum and don’t really know the best way. I have parked in the neighborhood and walked in, and I have paid the $8-10 bucks to park. It’s usually not too bad a traffic issue. But if you know a better way such as a shuttle, go for it and share.

While were explaining nicknames, I have managed to understand who they belong too and I know why on most of them, but what does WBS stand for.? Is it the same pattern as BSW? If so, who was BS referenced by WBS? I missed that one.

Also for anyone interested, if you are looking for walkup tickets, Take HW 40 to High Point Road North to the Coliseum. The couple of miles stretch between the HW and the Coliseum will have ticket sellers on the right side of the road. Just look for them, they will probably be at a Restaurant parking lot where you can see them.

I would not be surprised if Thursday evening tickets are less than face value. Friday will be another story.

skillful use of zone schemes worked well in certain games, and gave us a whole new gear. If we can rediscover that we have no concerns.

^ He said he voted for Brogdon for POY. We still don’t know which coach didn’t vote TJ for first team All-ACC.

I assumed that today we would have proof it was Laranaga who snubbed TJ.
Tomorrow (If we’re lucky enough) we would have proof it was Boeheim.

/You see where this is headed

As such, we really need to see much more of the alignment we’ve closed games with lately:

Hipster Cat, Des, Buckets, Le Nard, KH

^Agree. Cat, especially will be huge today. If we allow Lecomte and co. to get comfy again early I’ll be furious.

For today especially, I’ll take the hit on offense with having Cat out there. We won the ugly game in Coral Gables. I’ll take another ugly win in Greensboro.

It would be infuriating to leave the ‘no D’ squad out there and fall down by 10 again to this Canes team.

BSW = Black Scott Wood (Ralston Turner)
WBS = Wee Baby Seamus (Tyler Lewis)
KH = King Hippo (Beejay Anya)
    etc.

Sorry…. ANTHONY just ain’t ready to play the whole game… maybe by mid season next year…

Last time we saw ANTHONY with that opportunity was in the Dean Dome we he took ANTHONY on 3,4,or 5 to the ANTHONY SHOWTIME level….and he was 1-13 for the first half… thereby putting CUZ and the rest of his team mates in a major league “WTF funk”…

Gott just ain’t ready to take that chance again…. and neither is ANTHONY.

Aside from a few times where Dez has hit some big 3’s, would we really be hurting to run both PGs on the floor at the same time? I don’t like the idea of not having Lewis feeding Buckets the ball where he wants it. But having Cat on D would be great. I have yet to see Turner worth the playing time he’s gotten. Unless he’s hitting his 3’s, he doesn’t add much on offense and is a liability on D.

    Am I crazy?

^^Barber doesn’t have to play the whole game, and I do think Lewis should be starting. I love our starting line-up – that said, defense will be what helps us to a win tonight and if we seriously want to win the championship then we’ll need to play a lot more defense than we have played.

Minutes shouldn’t be at a premium in this setting, but match-ups certainly are. Lecomte, Swope, Addams, and Brown destroyed us last time out – but it started with Lecomte. We let him do whatever he wanted to with the ball on offense. That can’t happen tonight.

Crazy like a Fox. Here’s the kicker, who do you replace him with on this team?

^^IMO, you are not crazy maverick. I’ve been pining to get Barber time at the 2 lately when the Turner/Lee combo falters or even just to have Barber guard the opposing pg.

As for Turner/Lee, I think Turner has been a net positive over the last half of the season (we simply need his offense in a dire way), and Lee has been steady defensively regardless of his offensive struggles.

^^That’s my point I guess with running Barber and Lewis at the same time. Lee plays good defense, but I think Barber brings more in this matchup (even though that would leave Lewis guarding their 2, but I think worth it). And Barber’s potential offense is higher, and if he doesn’t have to run the offense as much, that may free him up to beat his defender off the dribble and do what he’s good at, driving. I’m not saying sit Turner a ton, but I don’t think we should have to run Lewis/Turner OR Barber/Lee.

They are going to shoot a lot of 3’s if they stick to what they want to do, and I would rather have Lewis chasing their shooter (not their driving PG) than Turner (I just keep picturing him looking lost multiple times on switches that left Paige way too open too often.

And again, I’m only talking about using them as a change up, not the norm. I would just be interested if that could potentially give us a different look for strategic times against these kinds of teams.

I don’t think we should have to run Lewis/Turner OR Barber/Lee.

^Completely agree. Stubbornness almost cost us the BC game w/r/t not getting the defensive squad out there.

All quandries are answered with the aggressive matchup zone ( ie:FSU, VaTech, **C)

Any guard combo can and should be used when in it, with no concern of being unjocked to the paint.

That team plays a very good zone, for having a man oriented coach.

Zone on a make..man on a miss. Shake it up Baby!

Wee Baby Seamus, how did I miss that.

A lot of talk about the 2 spot and that has been our weak spot all season.
Last time out, the Lewis/Barber duo got us about 14 points 8 assists. That’s great and I would hate to mess with it. They are doing well lately. But the two spot.. I don’t think we solve anything by putting Anthony there. He’s not as tall as Dez and no better at the 3 than Turner or Dez. We just need those two to step up their game, play hard, don’t force shots and hope they get hot. Turner could really help if he makes multiple 3’s today.

Although a little bit of WBS and the Cat is OK by me. Just not the answer for a lot of minutes.

The great thing about this years team has been Gott’s willingness to plug and play when it comes to inserting players into the lineup. I like running 9 guys deep (not that we have much of a choice this year), and being able to experiment on the fly to find a lineup that works against any given personnel grouping. Every player on the team has proven their worth at one time or another. Dez had some great games early in the year, and is a spark plug who can really pick up the team when he is on. Turner had a monster game when TJ was out, and like most shooters, the more he shoots, the better it gets. Tyler and Cat both bring different strengths to the floor depending on matchups. The bigs have all had their moments, and for a group of four guys with little to zero experience, they have been very serviceable.

I would like to see WBS and Hipster Cat together some, especially if Des is off. But we never see it, ever since December. I do wonder if they just can’t work together. Balancing personalities is one of the harder elements of coaching teenagers.

I’m not sure we should see ANY of WBS/BSW together at all. That’s two guards who can’t really guard anyone of Miami’s perimeter options. Think you need Hipster Cat or Des on the court at all times today.

I’m not disagreeing that the Lewis/Cat duo is a full-time solution and I agree that we need everyone to step up. It’s just difficult for me to really want Cat in there too much because Buckets benefits greatly (so far) with Lewis running the point more often than when Cat is running it. But I also don’t like seeing the other PG beating Lewis off the dribble either. That’s the frustration I know GOTT is dealing with. No easy answer.

BUT, looking forward in any event to tonight’s game (<-that’s not altogether true…as a State fan, there’s a mix of excitement and terror in a tournament setting. Of all of the teams playing yesterday, Miami is the one I didn’t want to face the most).
