Pack advances with 17 point win over VPI

NC State exerts energy on defense and shares the ball well on offense. Everything else clicked as you can see in the box score – like NC State’s 36-21 rebounding advantage. The Wolfpack wins 80-63 and Mark Gottfried improves his record to 3-0 vs Virginia Tech.

The game was close (State down 27-28) until the five minute mark of the first half when the Wolfpack started pulling away by converting turnovers to fast break points and when Virginia Tech couldn’t maintain torrid three point shooting that had carried over from the teams’ first game in Raleigh. State shot 12 of 14 from the free throw line in the second half and therefore never opened the door for the Hokies to make a run.

Mark Gottfried advances to 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

State plays Virginia at 2:30 tomorrow in the tournament quarterfinals. The Wolfpack defeated the Cavaliers 67-64 in the exact same Friday 4 vs 5 game in last year’s ACC Tournament.

History will repeat itself. It will be a forgettable weekend for the Commonwealth teams.

Still waiting to hear from NITStan whether the Fighten Sendeks (from the game thread) are a 1 or 2 seed following their epic choke against UCLA today.

Hope we can have a similar convo re UVA tomorrow.

Big key to today’s game? Lo Brown. Not just the 9 pts, 12 assts and 7 rebounds, but only two TOs.

  4. Rochester 03/14/2013 at 5:36 PM #

Don’t forget Brown’s defense on Erick Green. That was huge. The trapping, especially toward the end of the first half, really frustrated VT and resulted in a bunch of turnovers.

It was hard to take Brown out today because no one else could stop Green. Fortunately Virginia’s guards are crap, so it will be easier to give him a few minutes of rest. Just need someone to step up and slow down Harris.

Yessiree. Droppin dimes like a bank teller with arthritis.

He dribbled out of some tough situations. He looked good.

“Don’t forget Brown’s defense on Erick Green.”

Zo did a lot of good things, but IMHO this was as important as any of the rest today. Maybe more so.

They said only three teams had held Green below 20 points all year. We held him to 15 today. That’s almost all because of Brown, with some double team assistance in spots.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the line on Erick Green today. That’s the kind of defense we need to keep playing through to April.

There were a lot of times when State pulled the ball back out and looked for a better shot instead of settling. Calvin even got into the act (with lots of “encouragement” from Gott) when he resisted the urge to drive 1 on 3 on one trip down the court.

They all moved their feet on D.

I continue to love the way TJ finds a seam.

Gott has to get Lewis in there more often. Our team was dead tired at the end of the game. He makes 1 mistake and Gott yanks him. Zo or CJ make 5 mistakes they stay in. I know Lewis isn’t great defensively but neither is CJ or Wood or any of our players to be honest.

Team defense has been the key. Effective traps are critical.

Still wanted to strangle Zo when he sat back 5 feet on top of the key after the guard picked up his dribble. Pounce on that m’ther fucker and flail your damn arms.

Green gives a very good interview. Seems like a good kid.

I love our main lineup too, but there’s no way we are gonna have gas for a 4 day run if we can’t get our guys more of a break in a blow out.

TL will play more minutes vs UVa-he gave us many the first time after Zo rolled his ankle. Those wanting him in there more and guarding Green need to check it. As long as Green was off and frustrated then the whole VPI effort was useless. Give Eric Green some confidence and he could have changed the dynamic. Wait. See.

Absolutely agree Lo had to be in to handle Green on Defense. That being said Lewis absolutely positively has to get more minutes against UVA (well anyone for that matter). He should have got more today too!!! We all know the Lo & Lewis combo at the same time works very well. Lo was very tired and it showed.

Hats off to all of our guys for a great game. Get Lewis a good bit more minutes on the rotation and we may be alive to play on Sunday.

On another note, did anyone see CJ’s body language today? You can tell he is frustrated and kind of looks depressed out there. He still plays hard when he has the ball but off the ball he looks really slow. Just saying he doesn’t look into it.

^I don’t know. CJL worked his butt off today. He gave an outstanding effort, imo.

  17. Rochester 03/14/2013 at 8:06 PM #

I didn’t pick up any bad vibes from CJ today. Wasn’t as good as he can play, but it was solid and he didn’t inflict any serious damage. Got to the line and made free throws a pretty good clip, for him at least.

    Re: Leslie

I was worried too, when I saw his man get wide open for dunks b/c he looked slow covering his man.

Looked like he turned it around though.

Brown and Howell were great. Keep it up boys!

Shows what we know. When we defend we are very difficult to beat.

  20. Texpack 03/14/2013 at 8:27 PM #

Howell had the kind of game today that sets him up for the Case Award. That is the story to watch from here on.

Sixteen whopping responses to a Pack win in an ACC tourney game! One that they played at a very high level and possibly gave Greensboro half their highlight footage for the weekend. Locked down the ACC POY-what an absolutely crappy day for the Boo Birds. Sucks when you can’t come around because you guaranteed a loss to VPI.

Athletes their age with access to trainers should have no problem with energy and/or playing 4 games in 4 days. Fitness technology has come a long way in the past decade or so. All they should need is a recovery shake or two after the game, followed by a rotation between the hot and cold tubs, plus any further attention a minor injury or pain would call for, like a massage or rubdown, followed by a good meal and a good night’s sleep. If they do those simple things, they will be fine. If they don’t, then they have not done all they can do to win, in which case, they will likely get bounced. Taking care of your body is not that difficult when you are an athlete with a goal.

Count me as a happy Pack fan in South Georgia tonight. I didn’t expect us to have to play today but we took care of business.
I thought Calvin took what he was given – no more, no less. He’s better when he does that and he did it well today.
It looks like another early out from work tomorrow.
    Survive and advance.

Here here, vtpackfan! I still cannot believe how many people thought we were going to lose to the Hokies…

To carry your point about physical fatigue and what advances (not endorsed by Lance Armstrong) have brought forth. I would add (supplement 😉 that when facing a team like UVa it comes down to mental fatigue over physical. They are methodical and precise, but physically not an opponent to fear playing on no rest.

VPI didn’t put us through the mental meat grind like the OT game earlier and kind of let down their Commonwealth brethren. We still need to bear down and execute at all fazes of the game. I have a good feeling Lutz will scheme for Harris well, but it will take a big time full team defense effort.

One things for sure-in the half court sets we have to get Big Rich the ball in his range early and often.
