Can State break a streak at BC today?

Mark Gottfried did a lot of things right last year in his first season as NC State’s Head Basketball Coach. One thing that I liked is that he went out and took care of business by beating down programs that we SHOULD beat but have failed to exert dominance over in recent years. One of those programs is most definitely Boston College.

Gottfried did exactly what he should last year by posting a 3-0 record over the Eagles, including a 21 point win in the first round of the ACC Tournament (where the Wolfpack program historically excels the most).

Today, Coach Gottfried’s Wolfpack has a chance to continue to “get back” some of our lost glory by stopping an awful losing streak highlighted
here.

1. Packing for a road trip

N.C. State opened its ACC schedule with home wins in 2011 and 2012, but when’s the last time it started league play with a road victory?

The answer is the 1997-98 season, when C.C. Harrison hit a 14-foot runner as time expired in overtime to give the Wolfpack a 71-69 upset of 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech.

In the next 14 seasons, N.C. State was 0-7 in league openers away from home. That list features losses at Duke (1998-99), Virginia (2000-01), Miami (2004-05), Virginia (2006-07), North Carolina (2007-08), Clemson (2008-09) and Wake Forest (2009-10).

    Top 25 Conf Games Sat:
Pitt lost on the road (to unranked)
Olk St lost on the road (to lower top 25)
OSU lost on the road (to lower top 25)
Georgetown lost on the road (to unranked)
Cinn lost at home (to unranked)
Missouri beak Bucnell by 2 at home
AZ held on a home (another close game)

    1. Only Gonzaga and NC State had road wins Sat
    2. No other games had 72 FT attempts (not even close)
    3. ESPN2 commentors openly talked about calls against NC State (including the “push” by Purvis, the “three-point” contact by Purvis initiated by BC player and the free time-out and free ice attempt while Woods was at the FT line so the REFs could put time back on the clock for BC in which the foul occurred after the back had been inbounded but yet they put all the time back on the clock)
    4. JP Giligo also contrasted yet again the ACC ref crews working a State game with the Pac12 crew that worked the Stanford game. I saw the Stanford game and it was not physical to the point of being out of control. It was allowed to be played the way BB is supposed to be and had a flow to the game.

We won a road conference game (the opener on top of that) as we should have. It was close but BC, while being 8-5, had won 5 in a row and started 2 freshmen. So it is a mistake to think that they were some horrible team that should be beat by 20 points. Not in the home conference opener. In their next game, yes I would expect it. It will be a natural let down for them.

Bottom line is we took care of business in contrast to the above list of Top 25 teams. We won without our A game and the A game is not going to be there every game.

I’ll agree with most of that. My point is that it is not just “Lowe’s kids” who made mistakes. Purvis had 3 fouls in the last 1:45 of the game and Lewis is not an ACC caliber defender/scorer at this point, so I just don’t think there’s any reason to pile on “Lowe’s kids” when most made meaningful contributions. Brown didn’t play exceptional yesterday, but he’s 2 assists away from a double-double and only had 2 turnovers in 38 minutes. 14 and 8 is not a bad game and I’ll venture to say we won’t lose much if Brown gives up 14 and 8 with only 2 turnovers every game. There shouldn’t be much complaining about Brown yesterday. As mentioned, Howell is/was great and had a double-double and he always gives 110%. And Wood only played 20 minutes due to foul trouble. I’ll give BC credit in the 1st half for bottling him up and as all shooters, he’s streaky. He got hot at the right time. So 3 of 4 “Lowe guys” had meaningful impact on the game and too be fair, “Lowe’s guys” scored the last 16 points of the game. The guys calling Lowe’s players “like herpes” aren’t watching the same games.

Will take that any day of the week from Brown. What a nice point guard he is shaping up to be. And the fact that he can ruin defenses at will and shooter over defenders like Kobe does is icing on the cake.

Agree to disagree to some extent. Let’s agree to end it like this….Good Win, great momentum coming home where I expect all the kids will play well. Progress: underachieved yet still won on the road.

GO PACK!!!! 13-2 with PUKE coming in town

As an aside since there was discussion on another Karl Hess screw up a few days ago I am currently watching the UNC/Uva game. The Karl Hess led officiating team doesnt call UNC for their first foul until the 4:00 mark in the first half.

I can’t wait for Swofford to retire, be fired (when pigs fly) or die of ricketts or beriberi. The UNC officiating bias from the ACC crews is insufferable.

Roy wasted another “Sumo Squat” tonight…. Holes STILL lost !!!

Right on, gcpack – 4:44 left in the first half before the Holes got whistled for a foul, AT UVa ! Didn’t realize Hess was there, but should’ve known. Screw Swofford.
