Wake Forest @ NC State

Interest and excitement for Wake Forest’s visit to Carter-Finley Stadium today appears to be at a recent year low.

I don’t think winning today gains TOom O’Brien anything. I think losing costs him his job. IMHO, the only ground he can ‘make up’ is by winning all three remaining games and the bowl game.

The greatest problem a sports team can face is indifference, and there was a whole lot of that before, during and after the game yesterday.

State won big and the game really wasn’t even as close as the final score, but truth is, we talked more about hoops than we did football. It was definitely a going-through-the-motions thing.

Fans definitely seem to be making the transition from football to hoops, just happening sooner than expected. I think he gets one more year, but who what DY has lined up. The league is so bad, it would be nice to ascend and get up near the top.

    Nice summary, adventuroo.
It makes me think Yow is in more of a quandary, because she may want to make the change, but may not have the financial clout to do anything but get us a Bzedlik type hire… which will make the program worse.

The next hire MUST be an upgrade, & can’t be an ‘up-&-comer’ hire unless he’s a ‘can’t miss’ guy [who will use us as a stepping stone–when have we seen this before?].

Perhaps the key component will be IF the WPClub will toss some coin into the mix? I can’t see things being ‘bad enough’ that they would want to do that though…

    Howlie,
    Thanks for the compliment.
I believe we DO have the AD budget resources to buyout Coach and pay a competitive salary to a competitive new coach. But this is not a Sidney situation where revenue is declining.
Fund raising appears to be flat and maybe precarious.
Based on the charter of the WPC and the negative publicity of the Jimmy V era (largely UNTRUE) I doubt there will be no WPC checks.
I think that fan support or lack thereof will be the tie breaker and that vote of NO CONFIDENCE has already been cast.
Do not have strong feelings either way and glad I am not AD.

Overall a decent game and effort on Saturday. Only two big “WTF”‘s that I saw – both coaching.

    1) Started the game being aggressive with hurry-up offense which worked unless we stopped ourselves. Scored and gained nice yardage totals in first quarter. Then, we took the foot off the gas and their throats to go to a more conservative style. Produced no points and only 50-60 yards of offense. Why not continue to do what is working??

    2) Drove within field goal range as time is running out before the half. Stopped on 3rd down and there is 15 seconds to play. We immediately call time out leaving 13 seconds on the clock. WTF? Run the clock to 1 second and kick the field goal. Instead we miss and WF get the ball back near mid-field (they took a knee but thats not the point). If we make the FG we still have to kickoff again. WTF? Just another example of poor clock management by our coaching staff – this isn’t rocket science.
