VaTech: Greenberg out

A major press conference has been scheduled for 4pm EST this afternoon in Blacksburg, Virgina.

Twitter is all abuzz with rumors that Hokie head basketball coach, Seth Greenberg, has been fired…including this tweet just moments ago from Hokies Journal:

CBSSports.com just posted this:

Virginia Tech will announce at a 4 p.m. press conference that Seth Greenberg won’t continue as its men’s basketball coach, according to a report from Daily Press columnist David Teel.

Greenberg told CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman earlier Monday that he didn’t believe the scheduled press conference was about him. Multiple attempts by CBSSports.com to reach Greenberg after Teel’s report published have not been successful. Virginia Tech has neither confirmed nor denied the report. Greenberg has not returned voicemails or text messages in the past hour.

Greenberg, 56, just completed his ninth season at Virginia Tech. He’s only made one NCAA tournament while compiling a 167-117 record, and, it should be noted, that all three of his assistants — plus his director of basketball operations — left the program after this season. James Johnson left for Clemson and John Richardson moved to Old Dominion. Robert Ehsan and director of basketball operations Jeff Wulbrun both left for UAB.

Due to the odd timing of this announcement, there is some reason to speculate that more is going on here than is currently being reported. For example, there are scenarios where ‘Greenberg will not remain as VPI’s head basketball coach’, but would remain at Virginia Tech. Look no further than NC State who actually PROMOTED the least successful basketball coach in our program’s history in the mid-1990s when Les Robinson moved into the athletics administration only to later serve as the University’s Athletics Director.

There are also scenarios where things happen behind the scenes about which the rest of the world never really learns – ie recruiting issues, academic issues, behavior of players off the court, etc? Look no further than the events behind the scenes of Dino Gaudio’s ouster at Wake Forest that were not made public at or since his firing.

It is worth noting that Greenberg has not used his Twitter account since April 16th.

SFN just re-tweeted the following from David Teel

RT @DavidTeelatDP Greenberg’s record at VT: 170-123. ACC 61-67. One NCAA in 9 years. Buyout $1.2 mil for remaining 4 years of contract.

Another strange component of this developing situation is the manner in which VPI is ‘promoting’ this press conference. Usually press conferences that discuss a firings are scheduled quickly and without much ‘fanfare’; but, this PC is literally being ‘promoted’ by VPI outlets with a different style of communication. For example, check out this screenshot from the VPI sports website.

As much as I always wanted to ‘love’ Greenberg and his fire, passion and candor, I was never able to divorce myself from the public criticisms he made of NC State’s fan base when we were mired in the ‘Herb Sendek decade’. As SFN’s Jeff blogged in this entry in February of 2007:

As likable as Greenburg is, his propensity to publicly comment on NC State’s coaching situation (Herb Sendek) last year really rubbed me the wrong way. He talked A LOT on Fox Sports radio, etc about the situation in Raleigh and was too critical of Wolfpackers for my liking. IMHO, he would have been better served to have kept his mouth shut. In 2005, Greenberg defeated a deep and experienced Wolfpack coached Herb Sendek in their first battle in Cassell Coliseum. In 2007, Greenberg lost to a thin and inexperienced Wolfpack team coached by Sidney Lowe. I guess I don’t blame him for loving Sendek so much.

Stay tuned to SFN and SFN’s message forums for more on this as it develops.

(AP) Tempe, AZ — According to unnamed sources, ASU Men’s Basketball Coach Herb Sendek is strongly being considered for the opening at Virginia Tech.

Thoroughly mediocre coach at the ACC level. Better at the mid-major level. I was just glad I didn’t have to listen to him bitching after Selection Sunday this year. Dude just rubbed me the wrong way, a little too much of the Gary Williams misery thing going on along with the inevitable March whining. I wish him luck, but VT needed to move on.

If you win a football championship 80% of the time you’ve been in the conference the basketball coach doesn’t matter so much. They will probably get a mediocre coach and no fans will care. In 5 more years try it again. It’s hard recruiting basketball players to the mountains out there who are being considered by other ACC schools.

In addition to the timing, etc., I can’t help but find the following odd as well:

Greenberg told CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman earlier Monday that he didn’t believe the scheduled press conference was about him. Multiple attempts by CBSSports.com to reach Greenberg after Teel’s report published have not been successful.

“It had nothing to do with losing, it had nothing to do with NCAA appearances,” Weaver said at the presser, adding that he did not want to give Greenberg a new/refigured contract in the next two years.

I think that in terms of where Va tech should finish…Seth did an acceptable job. Where he really hurt himself was that he pretty much made the same scheduling mistakes each year. He finally had a decent ooc this year but his team was awful in conference.

They should hire Matt Daugherty, he must be doing something right Roy Williams jumped at a chance to coach his recruits and now Larry Brown did the same at SMU.

About time VT stepped up. Greenberg was an average coach at best. Maybe they can find someone better. Herb is not a big step up, but if they get him best of luck to them.

Herb would probably have to have something in his contract about not coaching games in Raleigh due to fearing for his safety.

Virginia Tech basketball – a rich tradition of nothing.

why did they wait. Why not fire him the week after the NCAAT was over.

Herb taking over at VT? That would be funnier than funny. Surely people in Blacksburg are aware of the history of non-accomplishment at not one but two major universities? Do they really want a circus of player transfers, of Magic 8-ball aphorisms, and all of that? Please.

As for him coming to Raleigh, what would Herb be afraid of? Getting laughed out of town?

I don’t follow VT that closely, but it was clear that Greenburg was more or less their version of HWSNBN. But, given the timing and Greenburg’s apparent cluelessness about the situation, could there be something other than winning and losing behind this? A scandal of some sort? I’m sure VT doesn’t want to risk getting the kind of “talking-to” that UNC recently received from Swofford!

LOL, skitchwolf…The dreaded “talking to” !!!

It would be fun to have Herb come back to the ACC. Just not State. It would be quite amusing.

randygupton: This just in — HWSNBN has officially removed himself from consideration for the VT coaching vacancy.

As for Seth, I figured he was a dead man walking. I do think he got a bit jobbed one season but for the most part his NCAA tournament absences were of his own doing.

I thought Seth was a pretty mediocre coach, who got what he did out of the emotional side. I found it very, very telling that Bobby Knight effectively called him out during an early season game between VT and Syracuse this year. He basically highlighted the litany of ways that VT was incorrectly trying to attack Syracuse’s 2-3 zone. The way they repeated the same approach over and over lead me to believe that they must have been coached to do these very things.

Honestly, I think VT can and will do better. I’m now living in the DC metro and VT is the single most represented school (at least amongst bandwagon fans). I’d have guessed it’d be Georgetown, UVA or possibly even Maryland, but I see far more VT gear than anything else. I’m sure that this is due to the football team, but it leads me to believe that they could recruit here with the right coach.

Fire up the newspaper presses . . . Seth Greenberg is the best that Va Tech could do. Who does Va Tech think they are firing a guy that averages over 8 wins a year in the ACC! (that is fact)

Can someone please print that? Because if Herb Sendek is the best coach a program with 2 National Titles can do, then Seth Greenberg far exceeds the top limit of what a program with only 8 total NCAA appearances can do.

No one has ever won b-ball at Va Tech, it has no tradition, it is a football school which it built up with Beamer.

Greenberg was not the next Wooden, but who is. He worked hard, had extreme passion, and typically recruited well. He had a great team coming back next year.

This clearly was not a personal situation with Greenberg, he would have seen it coming if so. The recent assistant leaving was an ignitor, and the W/Ls was likely the root case, just a hunch of course.

I have no remorse for Va Tech in b-ball. Return to the cellar. Welcome to the abyss and good luck on the coaching lottery. See Wake Forest for an example of what can happen, and Wake has a little more tradition.

What we have learned over the last few years, mainly due to the increased salaries at the mid-majors, is that getting a good b-ball coach is not easy. At least with Greenberg Va Tech was a bubble team every 3 years . . . and don’t forget about those 8 wins per year he averaged.

And yes, it feels good saying all of that knowing our B-ball program is in good shape, finally!

Sendek saw the NCAA tournament at NCSU alot more than Greenberg did while at VT . Greenberg was only in the dance 1 out of 9 years. Just sayin. I think Greenberg sucked more than Sendek. Lowe sucked more than both of them combined.

Not sure if anyone if interested or following this. Went to the Coach’s Caravan last night. Plenty of GOOD stuff going on for us. If you have curiosity about VT, then read this.

Not a real follower, or supporter of John F. I think that Mrs. G. called his show one time and dressed him down.

However, this opinion has been voiced by a lot of folks….

SO we will see WHO shows up for the Presser at VT.

Personally, it would NOT surprise me to see a Presser announcing that Jim Weaver was stepping down for health reasons and that the NEW BB coach would be hired by his replacment….

    BUT, who knows….

Certainly something that we went through before and, thankfully, now with Dr.’s Yow and Woodson, we are past such.
