How is State not last in the ACC power rankings?

New ‘power rankings’ are out from the ACC Sports Journal and somehow Virginia and Boston College are both ranked below the Wolfpack. Does that mean that State might actually have a chance when we travel to both Charlottesville and Chestnut Hill later this season? With a win this weekend over Central Michigan it looks like the Wolfpack could potentially win five whole games this year! Oh goody!! (Thank goodness we scheduled to FCS teams this year).

10. N.C. State (2-3, 0-2)
Maybe a little bulletin board material will put some life into the Wolfpack. After scoring three touchdowns in Georgia Tech’s 45-35 win in Raleigh, Yellow Jacket Orwin Smith said, “We haven’t played real competition to really test our skills.” Ouch.

    Well, it’s the ACC. Just because you’re almost comically putrid, doesn’t mean nobody else will be just as bad or even a hair worse.

    Are we good enough that we can go ahead and pencil in a win against Central Michigan? Are they bad enough? I say NO WAY.

    None of our games can be pencilled-in wins.
    That said, CMU lost to Kentucky, and they are as bad as we are this year. So the chips are in our favor for the CMU game.

    BC and CMU are comparable this year.
    UVA??? Who knows.

    For those of you who are miffed that we’re 10th instead of 12th in this poll, simply include Pitt and Syracuse, who are for all practical purposes already in the ACC.

    Now we’re 11th. Feel any better?

    The biggest surprise to me when I walked in on the game midway through the 2nd qtr wasn’t the score – I somewhat expected to be down 21, even though I hoped for better – no, it was all the empty seats that were clearly evident on national TV. In the 2nd half it was even worse: whole sections of barren seats for the cameras to pan across. I know for a fact the game was a sellout; if you buy a ticket or secure 1 as a student the least you can do is support the team. I also know of @ least 2 bball recruits that were attending so that means there were also probably fball recruits there. There are other programs that have down years/games & their fans dutifully support the team – Maryland, WVU and Minnesota come to mind. If I were a recruit I’d want to go somewhere the fans support you win or lose.

    If you’re trying to send a message to a coaching staff in its 5th year there are better ways – don’t submit the players or potential student athletes to that embarassment or the program becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    And you chuckleheads that want to bolt the conference for the SEC – how do those barren stands look on our resume? Or, I guess you’d sit through a 21+ point loss to LSU or ‘Bama, but not Ga. Tech? The best way to make it through hard times is to band together: the strength of the wolf is the pack.

    I’m showing up to support the players (I know the Raleigh boys), if not so much the coaching staff. I enjoy the tailgating and fellowship with my friends in the parking lot before the game and the folks in section 11 during.

    I expect we’ll beat CMU this weekend and maybe BC, but maybe not.

    Is this season disappointing ? Tremendously !!! Injuries have absolutely gutted this team, and along with it any chance of a winning season. But I’m still going to be out there at Carter-Finley, filling my seats for 7 games.

    I really don’t think this team is as bad as everyone is behaving. This team is going to surprise people coming out of the bye week.

    That defense was impressive for all the pieces it was missing and the run game churned out over 200 yards on a good rush defense. I’m looking forward to Sweezy being in at DT this week, and the return of Moose, Wallace, Manning, et al. for UVA.

    Personally I thought we had a very good crowd until the game got out of hand. Maybe the camera just happened to pan a section at an inconvenient time or something. Having been there I would not have had any complaints with our crowd when the game was still in reach. That being said, I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a more pronounced mass exit as early as this week. It was standing room in the aisles for several minutes after the pick-6. I’m not a guy who condemns that (I don’t judge the paying customers – especially considering how we are constantly crapped on), just making an observation.

    And folks talking about sure-wins are totally nuts. I expect us to lose this Saturday to CMU. I figure we’ll come up with some way to beat an ACC team to go 3-9 (1-7). We are who we are.

    People who paid money for those tickets didn’t leave for no reason. NC State is well regarded as having some of the most loyal fans and high paying fans out there. If fans are leaving as early as ever there must be a reason for that. Or wait maybe its just that our fans are lunatic A-holes and we are impossible to please and should be satisfied with our performance as long as we are not last in the conference…….. Where’s Lee Fowler commentary when you need it?

    I think when I do a bad job at work I would like for my supervisors to tell me so I can correct the problem. I think our players and coaching staff and athletic administration needed to see those empty seats.

    Nobody knows what will happen. The pessimist say 3-9 and the optimist say 7-5. Probably end up in the middle which would stink. Hard to pencil in any W’s with this team or say we will definitely lose out too. Get behind the team and see what happens. Debbie is watching.

    We still have a legitimate chance to win 5 games yet. And if somehow the “new” running games holds up then we might just do it. Especially if the defense can improve some as well. CMU, UVA, NC, BC, and Md are possible wins. I consider FSU and Clemson not within reach. Will we actually do it? Nothing but opportunity in front of this team.

    Oh good, more soapbox telling all us folks that pay $300 annual WPC dues + $300 LTRs + $800 season tickets how terrible fans we are.

    As for the SEC, Ben Hill Griffin had cleared out by mid fourth quarter the other night. Empty stadiums during routs aren’t exclusive to the ACC.

    And yes, I think SEC membership would very much infuse energy into the fanbase. We would also be able to differentiate ourselves in the NC/VA market and recruit at a much higher level.

    Having been at the one game we’ve had recently with a high-profile opponent (Ohio State, where I sold an extra single ticket for $100)…yeah, I think we’d be more geeked to lose to LSU than GT.

    You’re kidding, right? Semantics. Yes, that was absolutely a rout. It was 45-21 with a minute left. We scored twice in the final 0:34 in junk time against the third string defense.

    And I didn’t say anything about being ready for the SEC; I said that Ben Hill Griffin was empty in the fourth quarter. Fans don’t like losing, no matter who they cheer for.

    I’ve seen a couple of BC’s game this year and their sucktitude is everyy bit the sucktitude of ours – so I expect that to be a bloodbath in Boston. Outside of that (CMU aside) we’ll be underdogs. I think we win 5.

    One of my gym buddies bristled at the notion of us going to the SEC, pointing out we’ll get our butts kicked. We’re getting our butts kicked now. The difference is, in the SEC, we would get our butts kicked in style. And we won’t have to play those cheaters on the hill.

    I’ll betcha Swoff is still expecting VT and/or NCSU to bolt for the SEC. He knows money talks. Maybe the SEC, in particular Spurrier, would LOVE to have an easy W on their schedule. Adding ‘cuse and Pitt may be in anticipation of losing some team(s) to the SEC. Don’t expect Yow or her VT counterpart to tip their hands. Of course an AD will “act dumb” on the subject.

    Wait! They have GA now! hahaha. Don’t need us anymore.

    I’m not going to waste any energy trying to predict what our record will be at the end of the season.

    But, it sure was nice to see Sweezy in there. Too little/too late, but i think NCSU did improve some, considering GT is probably better than either WF or Cinci.

    The defense finally had some good 3rd down stops, and we found the running game in the seat cushions. That was countered by Glennon and the passing game taking a step down, however.

    I’ll try to get to every game remaining – for the school and the players (and also for the tailgating and fall weather i have waited forever for). I think Yow will do what she has to do regardless of how full or empty the seats are. Yow ain’t Fowler.

    I found it interesting that the fans did not even boooo before the mass exodus. The disinterested fans just got up and drowned away their misery in their beverage of choice. Meanwhile, TOB roams the sideline seeming to be just as disinterested.
