Fowler, Lowe Decide to Ditch Unpopular Jersey Design

After a swift outcry from students and fans, the N.C. State Athletics Department has opted to scrap its new white jerseys for the men’s basketball team and return to a design similar to the one it used last year.

Clarksa, great job. Can you produce picture without black trim around letters and the side of the jersey? I do not understand the black, it is not our school color. MSU’s “state” looks totally different and it is a non issue.

That is the best article Andrew Jones ever wrote!

That’s right, we did use the big S both on the red helmet and the white helmet. Sheridan did the diamond NCS. Somewhere I’ve got a picture of Gabe in the red helmet.

I’m going to see if I can link a few of the old uniform pictures to this site. I found a site in the DH Hill Library that has some really old pictures. If you’re old as dirt, like me, you’ll enjoy viewing that one sometime. I even found one of my old roomies in his BBall uniform when he was a freshman.

Here’s some from Gabriel, but none of the helmets have the block S, however the baseball hat does.

Here’s you link to the helmets, but I’m not sure it’s totally right. I’m going to find the pic of Gabe in the red helmet. Maybe it didn’t have an S though.

By mid-January, most of us will probably wish there was no team name at all on the jerseys.

OFF-TOPIC, but… I heard Russell Wilson is listed as “doubtful” for the game Thursday. Has anyone heard anything about this?

    It was here: http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/2/894176.html

Never mind. I just checked it, and they removed that wording from the top of the article. I’m still nervous, though. I didn’t like seeing that!

FWIW the block “S” has been the State logo since before the 50s. Sheridan did the diamond logo for football only when he came on board. The “NC” was added to the block during Amato’s tenure. But it is the official logo for all NCSU athletics.

Bradley, this is not your first time….behave yourself.

    I’m a uni freak.

Block S on Football lid, STATE on BB jersey and WOLFPACK on baseball jersey.

Hey highstick, the red helmets weren’t donned until 1972. and weren’t changed drastically until Sheridan. Here’s a great website called Helmet Project on the ACC page. I thought the Tuffy pride stickers were kinda cool.

If Fowler and Lowe decided to do away with the new “NC” jersey, then who decided to introduce it in the first place?

Our school is known to its mainline fans as “State”. It always has been and always will be, I hope. I couldn’t care less about anybody else who looks at us and has a problem figuring out who we are. Our uniforms should be what pleases US, not them! Besides, no one that I know of has EVER confused us with Michigan State or Stanford.

The basketball uniforms should restore “State” across the front, not “NC State”. If “State” was good enough to identify us in 1974 and 1983, it ought to be good enough to identify us now.

Keeping the “NC” on our uniforms is to me the same as putting “UNC Raleigh” on them. Please get rid of the “NC” on our basketball jerseys and football helmets!

‘Stick…the b dude is right. The red lid came in with us in ’72.

Holtz? Maybe, but he was a late hire. Willis?….Most likely long time equip mgr. Dorsey Poole.

I can’t believe we are even having this conversation.

    1) The Block S has been around a LONG time. That along with Tuffy are the two most identifiable logos we have. Whether or not the block S was on the basketball uniforms, football helemets, whatever is a different story but the Block S is most certainly one of our oldest and most identifiable logos.

    2) Dick Sheridan definitely brought the Diamond S logo from Furman. They used it as a carrot. You had to earn the right to wear it. I can’t remember the qualities they used but they brought it from Furman. I don’t remember it being widely used in other sports and IMO was a huge error by the athletics department as it led to different branding of different sports. (i.e. beginning of all of these jersey changes that have gone on for 20 years)

    3) We need to stick to the Block S and Tuffy as our logos for all sports. I realize we made some minor tweaks to both for ease of printing. That’s fine but don’t redesign the wheel. Pick a color scheme, jersey layout and make small tweaks now and then but quit f’ing up our brand.

I know the 70’s team wore the red helmets, but I remember seeing Gabe in a picture with a helmet that wasn’t white somewhere. However, it could have been an early picture of him as a pro or maybe even at one of the college all star games. It was a black and white picture though so my assumption had always been that it was red. If it was a picture of him in the pros, then the emblem was not identifiable. I ran across one of those on the web yesterday and really had to look hard to see the emblem.

I don’t remember seeing the red until the early 70’s though when Holtz came along. Odd that Gabe’s pictures did not have the block S, but he graduated the year before I started so that explains that. I did pull my freshman Agromeck(63-64) and the block S was on the helmets in those pictures.

I even ran across one of the old State freshman basketball team player’s pictures and all it had on the front was “Frosh”!!! LOL!
