Chronicling the Criticism

We need your help!

As you are well aware, a significant number of national and local media members have been openly critical of Sidney Lowe’s hire as Head Basketball Coach at NC State. Although this criticism is very relevant, we have chosen not to dwell and focus on it. But, we don’t want to ignore it completely.

So, what we would ask you to do is use our comments section for this entry to share criticisms that you have heard/seen on television and radio, and link to articles and commentaries on the internet. Feel free to include a quotation or two from the article that is particularly critical so if the source chooses to remove the article in the future, we will have the commentary chronicled.

We ask that you do NOT share your own commentary or thoughts on this entry. We just want links, quotes, and recaps. We are trying to compile a single entry with all of the criticism so that we can have it chronicled in one spot. We would LOVE to be able to come back to this entry in a few years and serve up a bunch of crow.

Thanks!

Recent hire trades substance for style for Wolfpack program

He’ll show up at little Johnny’s house, spin a few yarns about the N.C. State glory days and drop a few names from the NBA. It’ll be a good show right up until Roy Williams shows up with a shiny national championship ring and a laundry list of players he’s coached into the pros.

State fans, and apparently, some players got their wish. When Sendek left for Tempe, they got rid of a boring coach with a boring offense.

“(Lowe) told us he wanted us to be free and have fun,‿ said sophomore Gavin Grant. “(Sendek) wasn’t focused on having fun. He was more focused on we’ve got to win and it was this way or no way at all.‿
Yeah, sure. It’s all about fun now at N.C. State. Let’s get it up and down and stick out their chests when they play Duke and Carolina.

It’s a page out of the N.C. State football playbook. Walk loudly and carry a twig.

What you have here is a trade-off that most State fans will welcome. The straight-laced, soft-spoken coach that wins more than he loses firmly in the shadow of his neighbors for the tough-talking State alum that isn’t scared to yell at Coach K or Skip Prosser to fire up his team.

Style over substance never works over the long haul.

^^It’s also a slap in the face to every non-traditional student in our Universities today (almost of third of the entire student pop).

    Check out this article:

I know it’s not negative, but it’s just so dang spot on. The perfect counterpoint to the ridiculousness/pompassity of the ACC Basketblog. It’s a good story to tell Chris Wright, a really bright kid (Manny Lawson type, wants to major in math), who very well may leave for the NBA without his degree.

Roy Williams was UNC’s third asst. two years before he got the Kansas job and I remember the media ripping Kansas for such a dumb hire on a guy that had never even been a head coach. 99% of the guys in the media do not know if a ball is blown up or stuffed!

A good article overall, but it definitely implies that Lowe’s being black will get him fired quicker. Every sentiment I’ve heard on here was that his being part of the “family” would keep him on too long. I felt the need to email the website ([email protected]) to let them know that Lowe being part of the family matters FAR more so than his race (and that only matters cause we can rub it in those dang blue schools’ faces).

This one comes from Jeff Goodman of MSN. Funny, there was a time when we DID compete with Duke and UNC.
“Whether it’s Sidney Lowe, Rick Barnes or John Calipari, it doesn’t really matter. There’s no way N.C. State will be able to topple the powers-that-be on Tobacco Road.”

I am almost ashamed to add this as it is so stupid

With regard to the current lack of a degree by Sidney Lowe. I’d like to point out that I have a BA, a BS, a Masters, and am National Board Certified and I make about 44K a year teaching school. My brother on the other hand has a heavy equipment certification from Wilson Tech. and spends more than I make in a month in one day in Las Vegas. We are both big State fans! I think these critics are simply jealeus that he has been successful.

One of the things that have bugged me the past few years is listening to bozos calling into the local talk shows to say, “Well, State fans really shouldn’t expect to compete on the same level as Duke and UNC.
Foe those of us who are in our mid-thirties and older remember that throughout our childhood and well into our adulthood, the Pack was easily on even terms with the Devils and Heels. It has only been since 1990 that the Blue teams have skyrocketed past the Pack.
    Check these FACTS out:
In 1990, NC State had 2 National titles, UNC had 2, and Duke had ZERO
In 1990 NC State had 10 ACC titles, UNC had 11, and Duke had 9
So, most of us can say that for the overwhelming majority of our lifetime NC State was on even terms with the Heels and AHEAD of the Devils.
To hear a lot of folks tell it, State has been 3rd fiddle forever, truth is this a relatively recent development. These are the same ESPN influenced idiots who say that Duke-UNC is the greatest rivalry. It’s not even the greatest rivalry in the state! It was only until the nineties that one could even remotely compare the Duke-UNC rivalry to the State-UNC rivalry—I don’t care what those yankees in Bristol Connecticut say!!

  8. RAWFS 05/08/2006 at 11:11 PM #

^ And that is why they hate you, sir. They are the arbiteurs of all things sports, and you refuse to submit to their wisdom. There is but one college basketball rivalry, UNC and Duke, as much as there is but one baseball rivalry, Boston and the Yankees. State and Carolina nor the Dodgers and Giants need apply.

“Their nickname, the Hurricanes, is the only thing about them that makes sense, because thus far the NHL’s incursion into tobacco country has been a natural disaster.”

    –Sports Illustrated,
    October 27, 1997

“RALEIGH, N.C. (October 2, 2005) — If you have seats in section 121 at the RBC Center, keep an eye out for Tricia Andrews, devoted mother, wife and Hurricanes fan, who was recently named one of five finalists in the Sports Illustrated Sportsfan of the Year Sweepstakes, sponsored by SI and Verizon.”

“Tricia is in second place, but well behind a Pittsburgh Steelers fan from San Antonio. Also in the running are a Yankees fan from Jersey, a Jacksonville Jaguars from Florida and an Philadelphia Eagles fan from Philly.”

Trust me, I have no illusions that the Shelby guy will admit he’s wrong.

“tough-talking State alum that isn’t scared to yell at Coach K or Skip Prosser to fire up his team.”

This comment tells me that the guy in Shelby has no clue at all. There isn’t anything “tough-talking” about Sid. He has a confidence about him but in no way does he come off as arrogant or “tough-talking”. I beginning to enjoy how these guys are making themselves look much more foolish than they are claiming us to be.

  12. RAWFS 05/09/2006 at 8:32 AM #

    Tex,

You know what? I don’t really care what they say. After all, the games are decided on the court, not in the press, and Coach Lowe has forgotten more about basketball than most of the jock-sniffers ever will.

About the only thing I do care about is the COWARD G DOYELL refusing to answer my challenge for a boxing friendly at the local gym. Seems he doesn’t care to face State fans any place that they can hit back. Come on, big boy, put up your Dukes!

From this morning’s N&O (i’m sure most have already seen it):

Surely someone from this site was mentioned in Saunders’ story. Fess up!

  14. GoldenChain 05/09/2006 at 9:19 AM #

RedTerror, I would think that being ‘family’ is an advantage however, I also think its fair to say that the Wolfpack Nation’s patience has been worn down (for 15 seasons) to the point that the next person will not get near the time that the predecessors received. 1) being family will get Lowe more time than if he were non-family 2) race is not a factor 3) regardless of what anyone says the folks at that site will feel the same.

After scrolling through all the quotes above, I’m shocked & amazed at the number of “journalists” who would actually quote message board tripe in any of their columns. If that’s the best you can do to support your case, then you obviously have no case. Not to mention that it offically declares to the world, “Yes…I am THAT lazy!”

It appears a “Don’t feed the troll” link might be necessary for a few users.

    Lorenzo Romar’s educational history!

    http://gohuskies.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/romar_lorenzo00.html

A native of Compton, Calif., Romar graduated from Pius X High School. He earned his associate degree from Cerritos (Calif.) Community College in 1978 before studying at Washington from 1978-80. He completed his coursework at Cincinnati, receiving his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1992.

Note the degree came in 1992

Prior to his stint at Pepperdine, Romar was the top assistant under Jim Harrick at UCLA from 1992-1996. The year before he was playing for Athletes in Action.

    ….

I really respect Lorenzo Romar. He’s a great coach. I’d love to have him. People need to get off Sid’s back though.

  18. Dan 05/09/2006 at 10:39 AM #

^ in case people failed to make the obvious connection. Romar also got his degree right when it was required. Do you even hear anyone question Washington or Romar?

Listening to The Herd on espn radio – I think it was Doug Gottlieb talking about NC State and how it was pathetic that we were not happy making it to the tournament 5 years in a row under Sendek. Said we were taking not one, but TWO steps backward by hiring Sid with no recruiting experience. Why should we be satisfied watching the same predictable team have the same predictable season every year. We should be proud that we have the passion to have higher aspirations than settling for what some call respectable!

  20. Wolfman300 05/09/2006 at 10:45 AM #

    Just to clarify…

The “why should we be satisfied” question was obviously my own and not Gottlieb’s.

I really can’t seem to find any value in this thread. What is the point of this and is it prodcutive? Who cares what they say. I don’t. Please don’t tell me this site is going to go the way of the message boards now that some coaching change task is completed.

How about a write up on Monte Towe and his spark, fire, and passion for the red and white and how he is so committed to getting the Pack back on Track that he’s leaving a head position to do it. He did recruit seveal players that won a national championship you know. He did recruit the number 5 scorer in the country a couple of years ago. He is pretty decent coach and the last I heard he was starting a new job today.

  22. Sam92 05/09/2006 at 11:19 AM #

ok, i know this isn’t the right thread for this, but i was just looking at gopack.com, which has a story about how great the NCSU athletic teams have been doing — next to which there is a picture of Lee Fowler.

why doesn’t that article feature a picture of, say, Cullen Jones? or the baseball team?

it’s no big deal i guess but it speaks to me of the off-base mentality in our athletic department

  23. Dan 05/09/2006 at 11:26 AM #

Everyone should note that Lorenzo Romar also just was named the U-18 coach for USA basketball.

    Why is this important?

He will now get two weeks of unfettered access to Jamelle McMillan.

Aren’t these guys, Doyel, Goodman, ACC Basketball Blog etc., the REAL lunatic fringe?

I just finally got around to reading the Seth Davis piece. Herb said: “You’d like to be on the highest plane possible and not let those kinds of things affect you, but I think it would take a pretty self-actualized person to maintain that”

Boy, I don’t miss Herb-speak one bit. That’s almost as bad (but for different reasons) as when he told ASU in the press conference that we live in “a global world.”
