Next year’s 12th football game

At the risk of over-stating the obvious - next year is a very important year for the NC State Football program and every single leader with any type of influence over the direction of the football program. Unless the Wolfpack can string together four consecutive wins to close out the 2008 season, the program is heading for a 4th losing season in the last five years - all under the ‘leadership’ of Athletics Director, Lee Fowler.

To offer some historical perspective on this - NC State has experienced four losing seasons in a five year period only three times since the formation of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953..

WRAL: NC State and ECU play three times from 2010-16

Several gems in this article, so make sure to read the whole thing. The following is really interesting:

“We play them in ‘10, ‘13, and ‘16, and we haven’t scheduled any further out than that,” said (Lee) Fowler. “We had more games over those six years and I think Skip (Holtz) and Terry (Holland) got together and said, ‘We’ve got to make sure we can win and do some things properly’, so I think they wanted to back off every other year or every year, home and away”

MU and NC State have agreed in principle to a home-and-home series beginning this season at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The series had been in the works for the past month or so, with NC State working behind the scenes to move a guarantee game in order to accomodate MU.

Having recently been able to do so, the Wolfpack will now host the Golden Eagles on Dec. 22 at a time yet to be determined. The contract is expected to be finalized shortly.

Mid June Football Check

After yesterday’s entry on Markus Kuhn and last week’s little entry about the best players in the ACC we are starting to grind some attention towards football season.

Can you believe that football practice starts in just a month and a half?

To get yourself off on the right foot you can click here to see all of the pre-season entries for the 2008 season that we have logged thus far.

League will NOT expand schedules…more

Despite a lot of talk recently, the leaders of the Atlantic Coast Conference decided yesterday not to consider a proposal to expand the number of conference games played in both football and basketball. The Charlotte Observer provides an update of league meetings in this article.

ACC schedules will not expand to nine conference games in football or 18 in men’s basketball, conference officials said Tuesday.

Some basketball coaches had expressed interest in an 18-game conference schedule, but the issue died this week at the ACC spring meetings when coaches were reminded that a year ago they committed to 16 conference games through 2010-11.

Schedule expansion in football, too?

Just last week we were all talking about the ACC’s potential interest in expanding the conference basketball schedule.

Now the N&O is reporting that the conference will also consider expanding the league’s football schedule.

“It’s something that I think we should talk about and explore,” Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said Thursday. “There are some obvious pros and cons, and it’s certainly not beyond the exploratory stage for now. But with the 12-game regular-season policy, there is some additional room for flexible in-conference scheduling.”

Perhaps the best part of the N&O’s blog entry is that Lee Fowler is FINALLY NOT interviewed the piece!

Non-Conference Gets Upgrade for ‘09, ‘10, ‘11 (Updated)

UF

Those looking for tough out-of-conference scheduling need look no further than January 3, 2009 when NC State comes down to Gainesville to pay me a visit in a showdown with the Florida Gators. Of course we have yet to see how the conference schedule pans out, but most likely this will be the “tune-up” game leading into ACC play (at the very least leading into the meat of the ACC schedule). Florida returns the visit a year later to the day.

Breaking Down the 2008 Football Schedule

Sorry I didn’t have time to blog on this sooner, but the 2008 NC State football schedule is a very interesting one. Let’s take it game by game, and think of how the season might play out:

Aug. 28 at South Carolina (ESPN - Thurs.)

I love being in the national spotlight early. It will be easy for Coach O’Brien to get his players fired up. I particularly like playing a “nothing to lose” game - the players should be looser, and a win would have the nation talking about Tom O’Brien and NC State. Yes, I know that South Carolina had a disappointing year last year, but they are still a Spurrier-coached SEC team playing at home - they will be expected to win easily.

2008 NC State Football Schedule

ACC

The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2008 Football Schedule on Friday and the Wolfpack’s slate is included below.

There are no big surprises out there, but there is one extremely interesting subplot. Check out this entry from a couple of weeks ago after Boston College’s football schedule was inappropriately leaked to the press and we said the following:

…the brass at the conference office cannot be happy about the fact that Boston College has leaked their 2008 schedule to the public before the conference’s announcement. We found this link at Boston.com this morning that details the Eagles’ 2008 schedule.

State vs Gamecocks Series Close

Those of you that just can’t breath air without making sure that NC State has the toughest football schedule in all of America are one step closer to getting your wish.

The Charlotte Observer is reporting an update on some things that we discussed last month about NC State’s future football schedule. (Link). If the Observer’s information is correct, NC State will scheduled themselves one of the most brutal football schedules that I have seen and would inlcude games:

vs Florida State
vs Miami
@ South Carolina (coached by Steve Spurrier)
@ Tennessee
vs Boston College
at North Carolina
at Clemson
at Maryland
