A couple of days after we told you that Duke was going to make a big push for John Wall…
John Wall, the No. 1 basketball recruit in the nation, will likely take an unofficial visit to Duke later this week, possibly when the Blue Devils play Lenoir-Rhyne in an exhibition Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 Wall showed some interest in Duke this past summer and the coaching staff recently reached out to the people in his inner circle. Duke pulled his transcripts and was pleasantly surprised.
Was Duke’s staff not expecting John to have good grades?

Speaking of carousels, there’s always the basketball recruiting one, and it never stops spinning.
N&O/CO NC State beat writer Ken Tysiac posted a pair interesting quotes from hoops recuiting super-guru Bob Gibbons:
Gibbons said he has a “gut feeling” that Wall will choose N.C. State rather than Memphis or Baylor. But he said even if Lowe doesn’t get either of those marquee players, he will have a solid class.
Gibbons (espn.com, others) also said that State has a shot at Derrick Favors too, but labeled it as “wishful thinking:”

Kenny Boynton, one of the nation’s top scoring guard recruits in the class of 2009, committed to Florida Thursday evening, choosing the Gators over Duke, Texas, USC and Georgia Tech.
Additionally, I just ran across this article on the internet.
“Duke has been calling my coaches and sending me letters. They are trying to get in there and I am looking at them a little,” commented Wall.

I am not saying that the AJC is wrong…I just haven’t gotten the feeling that they really have much of a clue what is going on with Derrick Favors throughout the recruiting process. FWIW, this link speculates that a surprise decision by Favors may be coming soon. Then again, the AJC seems to pen some kind of article that doesn’t really say anything other than they are convinced that Georgia Tech and Georgia are definitely his leaders. Its really kind of weird.
Is South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors about to make his heavily anticipated decision between Georgia Tech and Georgia?

Wolfpackers everywhere are desperate for some good news. So - no matter how subjective the good news may be - we wanted to link ESPN’s recent article from recruiting guru Bob Gibbons.

The reports that John Wall has made a decision to follow Dwon Clifton to Baylor may be premature. On Dave Glenn’s afternoon talk show currently being hosted by Bomani Jones, Word of God coach Levi Beckwith called in to set a few things straight. This is definitely worth listening too as he talks about the Clifton’s, his background, his role in the process and what he considers the most important factor in this decision - who is going to be John’s head coach during his time in college.

WRAL.com/99.9 FM has posted an audio interview with Rivals.com chief recruiting analyst, Jerry Meyer. Some more background and insight on the Pack’s latest two recruits as well as other recruits like John Wall and Derrick Favors.
This guy does not seem optimistic re Favors.
If Howell is truly a “warrior” down low, then we’re going to like him very much.
Meyer repeats these rumors that we discussed last week.

It is reported that the Pack picks up 6′7″ PF Richard Howell. Second verbal in as many days. Here’s an important nugget from the N&O write-up:
J.J. Hickson, who was N.C. State’s leading scorer and rebounder as a freshman last season before leaving for the NBA, also played at Wheeler. “It didn’t hurt that J.J. went there [to N.C. State] and had a very successful season,” Wheeler coach Doug Lipscomb said.

NC State’s Basketball program received an important commitment from a key member of the high school class of 2009 when Lorenzo Brown, a 6-4 175 pound a combo guard from Alpharetta (GA) Centennial ended months of speculation and provided the Wolfpack a verbal commitment on Sunday.
Brown is a consensus Top 25 player in the country and averaged 25 points and 9 rebounds per game in his junior season. Brown had various scholarship offers and was also considering Memphis, Texas, UConn and Florida.

It is no secret that poor point guard play has plagued NC State’s Basketball Program for years. (Link to BJD’s recent positional analysis)
Even if Farnold Degand doesn’t bounce back from his knee injury this year, a fix for this problem may be on the near-term horizon after Ryan Harrow, a rising high school junior point guard, committed to play basketball at NC State. We discussed Harrow and the Wolfpack’s future roster was discussed in this entry at the time of Harrow’s verbal commitment.
On Sunday, the N&O’s Tim Stevens wrote a great article about Harrow and his potential for stardom.

ACCBasketballRecruiting.com - along with everybody else - is that point guard Ryan Harrow has committed to NC State joining consensus Top 20 high school star, CJ Leslie in the class of 2010. (Link here).
Harrow - a rising junior from Marietta, Georgia - is a little shorter than his listing of 6′0 and weighs only 150 pounds. As ’seeinred09′ stated on an NC State message board, “Let the record show that Chris Paul was 5′10” and around 150 lbs as a high school sophomore.”

PackPride has posted an update on John Wall. Wall is one of the top 25 players in the nation and is from Raleigh. We got permission to run this quote:
While he didn’t name leaders, Wall did mention three schools that are recruiting him hard.
“I think [NC] State is really coming after me hard… them, Virginia, and Memphis.”
NC State is the hometown team for Wall, who lives just minutes from the Wolfpack’s campus. His mother would like to see him play close to home but expect Wall to evaluate all of his options before making a decision.

Basketball recruiting for this year’s class is complete and first year Head Coach, Sidney Lowe has an awful lot of which to be proud!! Coach Lowe made the best of his opportunity to make a big impact as early as he could last summer.
After inheriting a program that was in such disarray that Lee Fowler found it necessary to sign the new coach to an (uncustomary) SIX YEAR deal last year, Sidney bested expectations on the court during his first season and has continued his momentum off the court in recruiting.

There have been so many little blurbs in the media regarding high school basketball recruits over the last few weeks that we could have focused the entire attention of this blog on just recruiting nuggets. I ran across the following this weekend in the Charlotte Observer and just couldn’t pass on it. (Link)
In four years, after he’s done playing at N.C. State, Greensboro Day’s Johnny Thomas — who was the best thing about pregame warm-ups Saturday — should definitely be invited to the NCAA Final Four dunk contest. He would’ve won this year in Atlanta. Easy.

I haven’t followed basketball or football recruiting with any real attention for quite a few years now. The slow death of my overall enthusiasm for NC State Basketball over the last decade combined with the exhaustion of the incessant spin from Herb Sendek’s basketball staff that almost every player the staff signed was a “diamond in the rough who is really going to suprise” completely killed my interest in the topic.
