$100MM non-TD (11/19 update)

Monday, November 17th
I thought about this last night and was glad to see that someone tackled the issue of the bad call by the officials at the end of the San Diego @ Pittsburgh game. Deadspin has it covered at this link.

An estimated 100 million dollars was wagered worldwide on the Pittsburgh/San Diego game, according to RJ Bell of Pregame.com. Approximately 66% of that money was on the Steelers; with only 34% on the Chargers.“If the touchdown was properly upheld, Steelers bettors would have won about 32 million dollars instead of losing big. This admittedly incorrect call resulted in a 64 million dollar swing in favor of the bookies.”

The return of K-Rob

robinson.jpgAs stated in an earlier post, NC State may choose to under-promote our alums currently making major contributions in the National Football League, but we will do our best not to ignore their contributions.

Koren Robinson was re-signed this year by Seattle after a string of injuries to its receiving corps that was, well, NC State-esque. It got so bad that the Seahawks started their backup quarterback (Seneca Wallace) at wide receiver, and he hurt himself, too.

We know K-Rob’s troubled history in the NFL and his losing battles with his personal demons. A second and even third chance didn’t bring about reform. But it seems that fourth time’s the charm, and others are noticing as well:

J-Co’s amazing one handed - or one headed? - catch

NC State may choose to under-promote our alums currently making major contributions in the National Football League, but we will do our best not to ignore their contributions.

Jerricho Cotchery has proven that he is good for at least three or four bigtime highlights each year, and last night’s catch on national television against the Patriots ranks right up there with the best of them. J-Co undoubtedly deserves the praise and pay that he receives.

Hauschka Scores First NFL Points

The good news keeps coming. Steven Hauschka has been kicking off for the Ravens the past few weeks. Apparently, he’s also their long FG man, having nailed a 54-yarder in the first half of the Ravens/Texans game.

Our hearty congrats to the first-class Hauschka family!

Your annual Adrian Wilson entry, III

I’m really not kidding about the title of this entry. See last year’s entry and corresponding videos. It really is time for our annual spotlight on Wolfpack great, Adrian Wilson.

Since the Arizona Cardinals were in town battling the Carolina Panthers last weekend, this year’s entry is primarily brought to us by this article in last week’s Winston-Salem Journal.

When Adrian Wilson isn’t making big hits as the Arizona Cardinals’ strong safety, he can often be found at a designer shoe store that he owns in Scottsdale.

The name of the store?

High Point.

John McCargo in the news

Not good news for former Wolfpacker, John McCargo.

First he was traded to Indy.

The Bills traded under-performing defensive tackle John McCargo to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick on Tuesday.

But he fails the physical.

Apparently, McCargo has a herniated disc

The Buffalo News, citing two league sources, reported on its Web site that the Colts found a bulging disc in his back, a detail Kelley could not confirm.

Our Best Pitch

The following was submitted to us by our old friend, SMD. The timing of the piece was perfect as Jerricho Cotchery was featured last night in a FANTASTIC piece on ESPN’s television show, E:60. If you didn’t see it, you need to find a replay of it and watch it. It was summed up by New York Jets Head Coach, Eric Mangini, “It’s hard to get better than Jerricho Cotchery”

N&O: ACC in the NFL

Joe Giglio at the N&O’s ACCNow has a fantastic blog entry analyzing the ‘ACC in the NFL’.

Very comprehensive. Very insightful.

J-Co is going to love Brett Favre

The Wolfpack-centric, NFL story of the day was almost the San Diego Chargers’ amazing comeback led by Philip Rivers. Instead, we’ve got Brett Favre to J-CO.

Mario Williams on Cover of ESPN the Magazine

Want to talk about making an impact in the BIG TIME? I hope that someone from the football program is taking note of this since our embarrassment of a Sports Information Director would never get this.

NC State’s Mario Williams was featured on the cover of ESPN’s Magazine 2008 NFL Preview Issue. That stands alone as a great accomplishment. However, take a quick click to this link from November of 2006 and look who graced the cover of ESPN’s Magazine.

Texans Mario Williams proves he is the real No. 1 (Updated

HOUSTON CHRONICLE: Whenever the Texans and Saints get together, whether for practice or a game, defensive end Mario Williams and running back Reggie Bush will be reminded of how different their careers could have been.

We have really enjoyed following Mario’s career and will continue to do so here at SFN. You can click here for a list of Mario-stories that you will really enjoy.

Carolina Panthers/NFL Pre-Season Thread

Like a long-lost friend, football is back! The Panthers open their pre-season slate tonight, and many questions abound. Can our old friend Muhsin Muhammad fill the black hole that has been #2 WR ever since…Moose left the first time? Is Dwayne Jarrett a complete bust? Is Jeff Otah the last puzzle piece for the OL, or is he just an overrated stiff? Will Julius Peppers be Julius Peppers again? Can Godfrey fill a glaring void at safety? He sure as hell better, after the Panthers passed on DaJuan Morgan in the 3rd round to take him.

Sunday Focus: Philip Rivers & Matt Ryan

Since Philip Rivers is on my mind and it happens to be (NFL) Sunday (if we were in season), I thought I’d take a quick ACC-related diversion for hard core football fans who like to stay fresh.

Philip Rivers ‘now he’s a folk here’
How awesome is this story on Philip Rivers?

The guts and passion that Rivers exhibited by playing in the AFC Championship game one week after tearing is ACL in a win over the Indianapolis Colts has worked to turn some of the mounting criticism of PR into massive praise. This article paints a lot of the picture. We will highlight a few quotes below:

ACC’s NFL draft success continues to be unappreciated

In 2006, the Atlantic Coast Conference produced seven of the first fifteen selections in the NFL Draft en route to setting the all-time record of first round draft choices from a single conference with twelve. Additionally, the ACC generated 25 of the 97 selections on the draft’s first day and had 51 total players selected in the draft — again the most of any conference in the history. (Crushing the previous record of 36 selections, also set by the ACC in April 2005, the spring after our first season with eleven teams) (Link to interesting entry from two years ago.

DaJuan Morgan joins Tank Tyler in Kansas City; D Pressley to New Orleans

KC

NC State’s DaJuan Morgan was chosen by Kansas City with the 82nd selection (3rd round) in today’s NFL Draft. See Morgan’s page on NFL.Com by clicking here.

Ironically, Tank Tyler was chosen by the Chiefs with the 83rd selection last year.

Analysts widely praised the Chiefs’ selection on the first day of the NFL draft and their second day selections are also garnering some praise. The Chiefs have twelve selections in this year’s draft and have publicly stated that they are looking to obtain as many as six new starters.

Praise for Mario, J-Co

Mario

We have recently run some nice entries on Mario Williams. On Christmas Day, the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain added to Mario’s praise with an article that (gasp!) focused on facts and statistics to support his point.

You can read the article that compares Mario to other current (and past) defensive ends in the NFL by clicking here. See below for a very small taste:

Let’s start with sacks. Williams has 14, or one-half fewer than Seattle’s Patrick Kerney, who leads the NFL.

Williams has recorded 48 percent of his team’s sacks. No defensive end accounts for a higher percentage of his team’s sacks.

ACC’s NFL Draft Picks & 1st Rounders

An interesting table of information available in this link. The information just adds to anyone who wants another reason to criticize Chuck Amato or John Bunting. But, why bother at this point?

Q: The most impressive coaching jobs of the last five years in the ACC?

A: Tom O’Brien and Chan Gailey.

Not even close.

NYJ & NCS

Good news, bad news for NC State and the New York Jets.

Former Wolfpack safety Andre Maddox was released from the Jets practice squad this week.

Additionally, Jets’ wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery earned an honor on USA Today’s 15th annual All-Joe Team of “NFL’s ‘grunts’ whose work doesn’t often show up in statistics but is integral to the success of any football team”. (Link)

New coach, new life, new Jets deep threat. Nice complement to another rugged mug, Laveranues Coles.

While one former Wolfpack defensive back was being released in New York, another was being signed in Denver:

Six Wolfpackers Drafted

It was a nice weekend for NC State to receive some positive PR!!! Six Wolfpackers were selected in the two-day NFL Draft over the weekend, and two others signed free agency contracts on Sunday. The Wolfpacker’s Draft Tracker highlights State’s six draft picks over the weekend. Heck, even Torry Holt got into the swing of things with analysis in ESPN’s studios.

* Prior to the 2006 draft, NC State had produced twelve first round picks. On Saturday, State grew that number by 25% when three players were chosen in the first round. NC State had never had three players selected in the first round in a single season.
