AD Quote of the Day: ‘Performance-based profession’

Back in September we made a really big deal about Coach Tom O’Brien’s comments regarding his program’s position as a ‘Performance-based organization’. The entry and the good conversation that resulted can be viewed by clicking here.

“McKeen played very well. He’s got a lot of pass rushing ability. I think he performed better than Markus Kuhn did. We’re a performance-based organization here so he moved up.”

This resonated with us yesterday

Ron Prince is out as Kansas State football coach less than three seasons into an attempt to return the program to national prominence.

Non-Revenue Sports Update; Kerrigan steps down(updated)

Here is an update on how State’s non-revenue sports are doing so far this school year plus a few other tidbits at the bottom.

Men’s Cross Country
• Finished 2nd in the ACC Championships
• State has finished at least 3rd in the ACC for the past 20 years, including finishing 1st or 2nd in the ACC in 18 of those 20 years
• Virginia won their 2nd consecutive ACC title and has won 3 of the past 4

The Don of Donations (must read)

Out of all fundraisers in college athletics, the Wall Street Journal chose our very own Bobby Purcell to feature in this article. Some may be surprised that there wasn’t a single mention of Lee Fowler and others probably wonder how Bobby can raise so much money since NC State has such “bad” fans. Maybe the only person left out that deserves some credit for the flood of donations and record levels of attendance at football and basketball games is former football coach Chuck Amato (who at the same time deserves a lot credit for the current state of the football program).

“Next Year” - Fowler’s 9th - shaping up to be sadly similar to past

If you visit regularly visit SFN then you know how to search our archives to find any of our many articles on the current position of NC State’s poorly performing Athletics Department. But, if you need some quick help you can click here for just a sampling of some entries that might be of interest to you.

In that^ spirit - and as Lee Fowler enters his NINTH year of ‘leading’ NC State’s Athletics Department - the projected performance of the programs on which he has put his stamp for almost a decade seems to resemble the underwhelming performance of recent years.

The State of State Part Five - ACC Rankings (Bar Graphs Galore)

How do NC State’s ACC winning percentages and conference finishes compare to the other schools in the conference during Lee Fowler’s tenure as AD from 2000-01 to 2007-08? Below are winning percentage statistics in ACC play for the 13 sports that have win/loss records and average finish for the 8 sports that do not have win/loss records.

Notes:
• These stats are ONLY for the 21 ACC sports in which NC State competes. They do not include ACC sports in which State does not have a program (lacrosse, field hockey, rowing) or non-ACC sports (gymnastics, rifle).

ACC Expansion Revenue Comparison

The ACC hasn’t gotten appreciably richer than any other conference lately. ACC membership is the best thing to happen to Virginia Tech since Frank Beamer. Boston College is another big winner. Miami will have to get used to smaller payoffs for success in return for revenue certainty.

Please note - the information contained in this chart is of ‘reported revenues’. No standard accounting rules exist to define what revenue each Athletics Department chooses to ‘report’, therefore the odds are very high that you are not comparing accurately consistent numbers across athletics departments.

We’re #56!!! NCSU finishes 53rd of 66 BCS Schools (must be the ‘fuhcilities’)

The final ‘all-sports’ intercollegiate Directors Cup for 2007-2008 has been released and is accessible by clicking here. (Looks like Lee Fowler’s second embarrassment in one day.)

NC State didn’t obtain extra credit for our great ‘fuhcilities’ or our fantastic fans and therefore finished the year ranked 56th in the country and next to last in the Atlantic Coast Conference, besting private institution Boston College.

NC State supporters highlight Lee Fowler’s 2007-2008 annual report

Athletic Director Lee Fowler released the 2007-2008 annual report for NC State Athletics. Except for a few individual student-athletes and a couple individual programs, it was the accomplishments of NC State’s fantastic supporters and fans that received the most attention in the report.

First, the NC State fans helped land Head Football Coach, Tom O’Brien; now, the support of the very fans that Lee Fowler so often criticizes provides his athletics program its primary success story of the year. (Oh the irony)

Here are a few of the highlights:

The State of State Part Four - AD Battle Royale

In previous entries, several commenters had expressed an interest in some historical statistics for comparison purposes. Below are some conference title and winning percentage stats over the last 22 years for the past five Athletic Directors at NC State.

Notes:
• For the 1989-90 season, Jim Valvano was AD until October, Harold Hopfenburg was interim AD until April when Todd Turner was hired. For this analysis, since he was AD for the majority of the season, Hopfenburg will be considered the AD of record for 1989-90.

• ACC championship stats are only for the 20 sports in which all 5 ADs fielded teams (Softball is excluded).

Pack Nine One Game Away From the College World Series!

The Wolfpack baseball team beat Georgia on Saturday10-6 and can punch their ticket to their first College World Series in 40 years with a win in Athens on Sunday!!

We cannot over-emphasize the significance of today’s opportunity is for the entire NC State Athletics Department.

Since Lee Fowler became Athletics Director at NC State, Virginia - whose overall athletics program ranks near the top of the ACC with extremely strong, broad athletic success - and NC State are the only athletics programs in the ACC to have failed to participate in at least a Frozen Four, a College World Series, a BCS Bowl, or a National Basketball Championship game.

All Focus on…Lee Fowler, of course!

At a time when all focus should be on the quest of NC State’s Baseball to reach the College World Series - the Pack will travel to Georgia this weekend - our ‘esteemed’ Athletics Director turns some attention on…HIMSELF, of corse

Yesterday, Pack Pride highlighted an ‘extended interview’ that Lee Fowler gave WRAL-TV5 over the weekend. WRAL-TV also ran similar video interviews with Tom O’Brien and Sidney Lowe. The reason we aren’t criticizing Coach Lowe and Coach O’Brien for their inverviews is because (1) they are actually COACHES and don’t just play one in their fantasies and (2) they haven’t been interviewed at extreme lengths by GoPack.com, PackPride.com, 850TheBuzz and the News & Observer in just the last six weeks!

UNC Fires Lacrosse Coach Who Lost In NCAA Tournament

Haus, 46, compiled a 58-52 record in his eight years at UNC following two as head coach of Johns Hopkins, which went to the NCAA semifinals both seasons.”Obviously, we’re not at the level we would like to be,” UNC athletic director Dick Baddour said Tuesday. At the same time, Baddour made it clear that the Tar Heels should be competing for the national championship.

The State of State Part Three–Meet The Standards

“My goals have always been to be in the top three in the conference. If you’re in the top three you always have a chance to win the championship. That’s an obvious goal as well. Minimum goals, we don’t want to be in the bottom-half of anything.. the bottom-half in any sport.”
–Lee Fowler, PackPride.com, 5-22-08

“Our minimum should be middle of the conference, not last in the league”
–Lee Fowler, Technician, 8-31-07

These statements lead to three questions.

The State of State Part Two–Improvement

Disclaimer: Only facts and statistics will be stated below, you the reader can draw your own conclusions and opinions.

Did NC State’s athletic programs make progress and do better this school year than they did last year? One metric (and certainly not the only one) is to look at regular season conference standings.

State competes in 21 different ACC sports plus gymnastics (EAGL) and rifle (SEARC & GARC). In the 2007-2008 school year, 6 out of those 23 programs finished higher in their conference standings than they did the year before, 11 finished worse and 6 maintained the same standing. All 12 ACC schools compete in the sport unless indicated.

The State of State Part One — Overall ACC Records

Disclaimer: Only facts and statistics will be stated below, you the reader can draw your own conclusions and opinions.

Listed below are the overall ACC records for NC State’s team sports (teams that have a won-loss record) for the eight year time span Lee Fowler has been AD (2000-01 to 2007-08).

Revenue Sports
• Football: 28-36 (.438)
• M Basketball: 60-68 (.469)
• W Basketball: 63-57 (.525)
• Baseball: 109-104 (.512)

Both of the high profile revenue sports, Football and M Basketball, have losing records in ACC play.

Both W Basketball and Baseball have winning records in ACC play.

Late pushes fall flat for Pack; Baseball represents last hope

After failed attempts to garner some kind of notable success by a couple of NC State’s non-revenue sports fell flat this week (men’s golf and women’s softball), NC State’s Baseball team remains as the last primary opportunity for Lee Fowler’s athletics department to do something special and win a “major” ACC Championship.

It is something that hasn’t happened at NC State in a LONG time. And, as you will see from the statistics below it is something that hasn’t happened at NC State in far too long when compared to other programs throughout the country.

NCAA & ACC Championships since 2000

The table below that can be seen in larger a format by clicking here ranks Atlantic Coast Conference institutions by the number of ACC Championships claimed since 2000 (the year that Lee Fowler came to NC State). Additionally, the italicized numbers in parantheses is the rank for each school in the designated column. For example, NC State ranks 12th (last) in number of National Championships and 9th (last of pre-expansion ACC schools) in number of different sports in which we have won an ACC Championship.

ACC & NCAA Titles

Some following notes &; bytes:

ACC Championship Weekend yields no titles for Pack

The Atlantic Coast Conference hosted a series of Championships this weekend that provided 33% of Atlantic Coast Conference members an ACC Championship when:

* Florida State won its FIRST men’s golf championship

* Virginia won men’s tennis

* Clemson won the women’s tennis championship

* Duke won women’s golf

Additionally, we haven’t yet taken the opportunity to congratulate Boston College for claiming their National Championship in men’s hockey last week. We had a fantastic conversation about BC’s “Frozen Four” that you should read in this entry. Some great conversation in the comments section.

Congratulations Eagles! Ouch Wolfpack!

BC Eagles

StateFansNation would like to shout out a congratulations to our conference bretheren in Chestnut Hill as the Boston College Eagles have advanced to their third consecutive Frozen Four, hockey’s version of Final Four’.

Although many in the north - including a lot of the BC students - are more interested in hockey than basketball, I translate this into the equivalent of advancing to three straight College World Series in baseball (which is something that the UNC-CH Tar Heels may achieve this year).
