ORLY? (Updated @ 1:20pm)

This sort of thing drives me crazy: unsubstantiated speculation that is 100% paradoxical to reality. From a (supposed) ‘professional journalist’:

orly.jpgFox/Goodman: 65 Things to Watch For This College Season

Three ACC coaches — Maryland’s Gary Williams, N.C. State’s Sidney Lowe and Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton — are feeling a little heat to win. My guess is at least one of them is history after the season. But which one?

You have to wonder where this is coming from…other than the mouth-breathing fulminations of fringe message board posters, that is.  I’ve not heard a single credible source say anything that might even lead me to believe that NC State head coach Sidney Lowe is feeling any heat this season.  Not a single one.

WRAL: NC State and ECU play three times from 2010-16

Several gems in this article, so make sure to read the whole thing. The following is really interesting:

“We play them in ‘10, ‘13, and ‘16, and we haven’t scheduled any further out than that,” said (Lee) Fowler. “We had more games over those six years and I think Skip (Holtz) and Terry (Holland) got together and said, ‘We’ve got to make sure we can win and do some things properly’, so I think they wanted to back off every other year or every year, home and away”

There are a few FACTS that you should know:

Newsflash! Rutgers fans boo entire 2nd half (Updated Fri 10:50am)

BIG NEWS! BIG NEWS!

After booing on the kickoff of the second half of thursday’s game against North Carolina, Rutgers fans continued to boo on almost every play from scrimmage throughout the rest of the game. (Those fans that actually stayed and didn’t leave early to beat traffic)

RUTGERS!?! This is same program that was easily one of the worst programs in all of college football for decades prior to the last few years and with fans with credentials nowhere close to fans with these credentials. This is not hyperbole. This program was Duke-like in their futility. It sure doesn’t take long for fans to get ridiculously irrational with a little success.

ESPN.com: Carter-Finley 11th Toughest Stadium In The ACC (Updated 1:45pm)

It’s almost the official middle of summertime - about six weeks past Memorial Day and about six weeks until the start of the college football season - so it is obviously a slow time where college sports are concerned.  Fall practices are still several weeks out, and it’s really too soon for the major media outlets to start covering upcoming games.  Still, it’s a 24×7 news cycle and the media needs to drive traffic in order to get paid for their ads. Lacking news, they quite often they come up with meaningless lists like ESPN.com’s “Toughest Places To Play In The ACC.”

Raycom to expand web and television interaction; NC State officials dumbfounded, irate

Raycom Sports has entered into an agreement with another company to enhance its internet offerings during game telecasts starting during football season. (Link to article)

CHARLOTTE - Raycom Sports is hoping to capitalize on sports fans’ growing multitasking. The syndicator has announced a partnership with Jacked SportsTop that will begin during telecasts of Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference football games this fall and continue during basketball season.

The Jacked SportsTop is an Internet application that allows fans to download a device on their computers that provides statistics, videos, photos, news and other interactive features, including live chats with other fans. The application will be synchronized with the game telecast and be surrounded by online ads.

Lee Fowler appearance on 99.9FM Wednesday morning

No…you read that headline correctly.

One of the only Athletics Directors in the country to have his own television show needs to make another radio appearance.

Update: You can click here to hear the interview.

In addition to his regular column in the Wolfpacker magazine and the recent tour of the entire State of North Carolina with the Wolfpack Club Caravan, NC State’s Athletics Director has made appearances and given thorough interviews to GoPack.com, PackPride.com, the News & Observer and WRAL-TV5.com in just the last 60 days.

Changes Coming to N&O Sports Section

I recognize the value in the synergies created by merging many of the duplicative functions created by having operations in both Raleigh and Charlotte; but, the N&O’s Sports Page had easily become the best part of the newspaper while the Charlotte Observer’s sports page is rife with bias, off-base coverage and one of the worst I have ever seen.

Of all the fanbases out there, this move should scare NC State fans the most. Charlotte has a history of misunderstanding NC State while taking an absurdly adversarial approach to the Wolfpack when they choose to cover State - which is disproportionately less than the size and magnitude of NC State fans and followers would warrant as the area’s largest University.

Pack Pride vs The Wolfpacker

This is a topic that we have never discussed here on SFN and it is time to get it out there as my premium subscription to Pack Pride has recently expired and I cannot decide if I am going to renew it. I have severely limited familiarity with TheWolfpacker.com because of (1) my historical ties to the old StateFans.com that evolved into Pack Pride and (2) how bad TheWolfpacker.com used to be years ago.

A very quick glimpse of the two sites indicates that the message board community at Pack Pride is significantly more vibrant than the Wolfpacker - but, is the multitude of stupid people and the biased moderation of many of the personal attacks allowed on PackPride worth the ‘vibrancy’?

UCLA Farks Overexposed Hopsbrough

Hansbrough

The Final Four is almost here. Which means a lot of things…and this year it means that the world will have the ‘pleasure’ of watching the most amazing college basketball player in history!

With Rick Morrissey leading the charge in this fantastic article, we FINALLY have some other folks in the media willing to highlight some of the insanity around the world’s love affair with the previously unassailable Hopsandwalk.

Analysts for my network, CBS, portray Hansbrough as a crime-fighting special-forces soldier. He’s Batman Hansbrough. The only thing missing during some broadcasts of his games is the waving of the American flag and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner.

Billy Packer - Patron Saint of Objectivity

It was the rarest of rarities (aside from Wolfpack championships) - a long profile in Sunday’s N&O that seemed tailor made for me. There are tons of great anecdotes (don’t miss the “shard grabbing” story) - read the whole thing. But the overriding theme reinforces what I like about Packer - his near slavish devotion to the pursuit of complete objectivity:

“What I’ve always loved is the competition of being able to go out there and say what I see and to be objective, but that in turn obviously annoys people, because 50 percent of them, that objectivity is not gonna be what they want to hear,” Packer says.

‘Signgate’ stupidity and the good old double standard!

Been traveling a lot. (No…not the Tyler Hopswalk kind of traveling) Busy with work. Only so many hours in the day to keep the blog updated.

I was at the game last night. Saw the “disgraceful” (sarcasm) sign that the baseball player held up at halftime. Didn’t think twice about it. All I could make of it was that it was a picture of Hansbrough’s bloodied nose from last season with some comment about him finally wearing the right color.

Chilling anniversary: The Broken Nose

It was a horrifying moment. A chilling blow in the middle of a contested ACC game. Blood began to flow immediately. The shocked victim looked up, grabbed his nose, saw the blood pouring out, and had to exit the game. Who can ever forget it?

But then — oh, the bravery! The strength of character! Despite such a terrible injury, the player returns the very next game. He has to wear a mask to protect his broken nose, but how amazing that a player can do that, right?

SFN wishes to salute the media for being so fastidious, so compassionate … so late. Little was said at the time when Dennis Horner had his nose broken during the Georgia Tech game last year on this date, February 6. In fact, one would have thought that such injuries were common in basketball such that they didn’t deserve days upon days of fresh stories and media obsession.

Who knew getting commitments from South Carolina was such a big deal?

Today’s Charlotte Observer provides us a great opportunity to bring a couple of recent stories together for a quick note. There is certainly nothing earth shattering here; just some interesting observations.

Earlier this week we shared two different entries that you should read if you havent. One was an entry focused on NC State football recruiting in light of Sterling Lucas’ commitment to the Wolfpack on Tuesday (click here for link). The other was a good entry that turned into a fantastic conversation about the media that was built on the Charlotte Observer’s poor and slow coverage of NC State football recruiting (click here for link).

Charlotte Observer Over A Week Behind with Information

The Charlotte Observer ran a feature article about college football prospect, Robert Quinn today. To the side of the conclusion of the article on page 3C the Observer listed their Top 50 recruits in North Carolina and South Carolina. Why would I be surprised that they listed RJ Mattes as uncommitted with seven potential schools when Mattes publicly committed to NC State eight days ago and has called every coach recruiting him and asked them to stop their recruitment?

RAWFS Takes Down Lenox Rawlings

Yes, perhaps it is low-hanging fruit, but our friends at RAWFS do a masterful job smacking him around this morning. It’s truly a must read piece.

To be fair, there is another Javier Lopez in the sports world - but he’s a situational lefty for the Red Sox. As near as we can tell, he also has no connection to NC State basketball. Sorry, Lenox.

Curious Media Quotes - It is all about perspective

If NC State wins, I am happy and I think that it is a “good thing.”

If NC State loses, I am sad and think that it is a “bad thing.”

I admit it. I am also just a fan. I am not a journalist. You are reading StateFansNation that admits our bias. You are not reading something from a site that presents itself or strives to achieve impartiality as a part of journalistic integrity.

With this said, I am shocked at how many news organizations have allowed their reporters to deterioriate the quality of their stations due to gross informality and bias.

More on the ESPN2 / Jimmy Dykes Bull*#&^ (Updated 3pm)

Before you read any further, you need to click on this entry that lays the groundwork for comments made here.

“Costner, who is 6′9 can shoot threes because he was recruited into Herb Sendek’s system.”

* ESPN color analyst, Jimmy Dykes commenting on the secret source of Brandon Costner’s abilities with approximately four minutes to go in the first half of NC State’s 74-67 win over Michigan on Monday night.

Pack Baseball in N&O, not CHLT

Seven ACC baseball teams made the 64-team NCAA tournament field announced Monday, with North Carolina one of four regional hosts from the league and N.C. State the No. 2 seed at the Austin, Texas, regional.

Special thanks to News & Observer for sharing with the world that both Carolina and State made the NCAA Baseball Tournament in this piece.

The Pack will face perennial Pacific-10 power Stanford (30-25) in its first game at noon Friday. The Cardinal won nine of its final 13 in the regular season. There is no Pac-10 tourney.

Chronicling the Criticism

We need your help!

As you are well aware, a significant number of national and local media members have been openly critical of Sidney Lowe’s hire as Head Basketball Coach at NC State. Although this criticism is very relevant, we have chosen not to dwell and focus on it. But, we don’t want to ignore it completely.

So, what we would ask you to do is use our comments section for this entry to share criticisms that you have heard/seen on television and radio, and link to articles and commentaries on the internet. Feel free to include a quotation or two from the article that is particularly critical so if the source chooses to remove the article in the future, we will have the commentary chronicled.

CLT OBS Headline Writer Struggles with Common Sense

The headline of today’s Meineke Car Care Bowl section of the Charlotte Observer reads:

“Sales slow for Pack and…who?”

Link

Look at that again. “SLOW” ticket sales. SLOW ticket sales “for (the) Pack”. Oh my God. Is this a joke that missed the mark?

Talk about living up to the stereotype of being out of touch with reality and not understanding how the real world works? The Charlotte Observer has given the New York Times a run for its money in the category of ridiculousness. Damn the truth!! Who needs facts to mess up a nice backslap from the baby-blue-led local rag?
