ORLY? (Updated @ 1:20pm)

This sort of thing drives me crazy: unsubstantiated speculation that is 100% paradoxical to reality. From a (supposed) ‘professional journalist’:

orly.jpgFox/Goodman: 65 Things to Watch For This College Season

Three ACC coaches — Maryland’s Gary Williams, N.C. State’s Sidney Lowe and Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton — are feeling a little heat to win. My guess is at least one of them is history after the season. But which one?

You have to wonder where this is coming from…other than the mouth-breathing fulminations of fringe message board posters, that is.  I’ve not heard a single credible source say anything that might even lead me to believe that NC State head coach Sidney Lowe is feeling any heat this season.  Not a single one.

Andrew Jones: Butch ‘Davis part II(updated)

Just ask any Tarheel fan and they will be sure to tell you that there is nothing to the story. And, of course, why would anyone ever leave Chapel Hill by their own choosing. (Shhhh…don’t mention Mack Brown).

Tennessee has tabbed North Carolina coach Butch Davis as the leading candidate to replace ousted football coach Phillip Fulmer, multiple sources have told the News Sentinel.

Whether UT can secure Davis remains to be seen. Davis has said publicly that he is happy at North Carolina because of the family environment in Chapel Hill and the opportunity to rebuild a program that has long struggled.

Tell me again why UT didn’t want to hire Lee Fowler in 2003?

A few months ago we ran the following comments in this entry comparing Lee Fowler to Joe Alleva in light of the LSU Athletics Directorship:

Lee Fowler’s interest in other Athletics Director jobs have not been a secret since his arrival in Raleigh in September of 2000. In the seven-plus years of Fowler’s tenure, the man that likes to be referred to as “Coach” has expressed interest and interviewed for multiple jobs of all shapes and sizes.

ESPN: Tennessee’s Fulmer Stepping Down At End of The Season

carousel.jpgThe Rumor Mill just got officially interesting for Butch Davis and David Cutcliffe:

ESPN.com: Sources: Fulmer To Step Down

Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Volunteers’ coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Questions immediately come to mind:

  • Will Butch Davis not officially express an interest in the job, and get a big raise either way?  Jimmy Sexton, his agent, says Davis is very happy where he is, but truth is, schools like UT and others will be asking, and those questions could prove very expensive for UNC.  If they want to remain relevant in football they will likely need to keep the Chief at pretty much whatever price it costs.  This could be an annual thing for a few years for Carolina.

You thought we had bad attrition? or, Todd Turner is not a sports handicapper

As we highlighted in this entry last week, injuries and attrition have been a major topic in WolfpackNation over the last couple of years.

Our numbers are not a pretty sight; but, we’ve surprisingly found another program that has had it worse.  Of course, that program has fired their coach (who will stay on until the end of the season) for his performance in the midst of his retention issues.  I’d say the Wolfpack is a long way from that conclusion in light of the optimistic mood that most fans continue to have about the future of State’s program under the guidance of Tom O’Brien.

The Fall Guys

After a busy weekend of college football, we are a week closer to the cranking up of the coaching carousel. The Wiz of Odds has an interesting entry this morning on college football coaches and their coordinators.

Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News surveyed 120 I-A teams for the number of coordinators since 1999, when Tommy Tuberville, above, made his debut at Auburn. Of the 15 coaches who have held the same job since 1999, Tuberville and Troy’s Larry Blakeney have each burned through 10 coordinators, tops in the land.

On average, the 15 coaches have employed only 5.6 coordinators in 10 years.

Terry Bowden Says Brother ‘Deserved’ Firing

underthebus.jpgThere’s nothing quite like throwing your brother under the bus in the media to make the family Thanksgiving dinner a lot more interesting:

AJC: Brother Deserved Firing

“He deserved it because he, of all people, knew what to expect when he got into this business,” Terry Bowden wrote in his weekly Yahoo.com comments.

“Clemson expects to win the conference championship every once in a while — and they should,” Terry Bowden said. “After 10 years of falling short, they deserve the right to try and find a coach they believe can get them there.”

Kansas State should be ashamed

kstate-cash.jpgThat would be Wildcats assistant Dalonte Hill, Beasley’s former AAU coach in the Washington, D.C., area. Hill, entering his sixth season as a college assistant, will make more money for the 2008-09 season than the entire three-man staffs at Ohio State, Washington State and Wisconsin and only $5,000 less than the staff at Texas, a survey done by Rivals.com shows.K-State released Hill’s contract in May. The school paid him $400,000 in 2007-08, and it will pay him $420,000 a year – $150,000 in base salary and $270,000 in “additional compensation,” defined as “television, radio, internet, promotional and other services” – for the next four years. He is entering his third year at K-State.Because private universities are not required to release salary information, it’s unknown whether Hill is the highest-paid assistant in college basketball. But based on Freedom of Information requests, Hill is far and away the highest-paid assistant among public universities that finished in the top 15 in the 2008 coaches’ postseason poll. Rivals.com obtained the contracts and/or salary figures for the assistants at all 10 public schools that finished in the top 15, as well as the contracts and salary figures for the assistants at Florida and Ohio State (because along with Texas they have two of the largest athletic budgets in the country) and Kentucky (because of its status as a traditional basketball power).

Bowden & Spence out at Clemson [8th Update, 12:00 pm]

tommy-bowden-frustration-425.jpg
Be sure to look below to read the updates to the story as they happen…

Tommy Bowden has been relieved of his duties as Clemson’s head football coach, effective immediately, Tigerillustrated.com has learned. Bowden told assistant coaches moments ago in a staff meeting.

We talked about this in detail on Friday in a comprehensive entry that includes a great list of potential candidates for replacement.

Amato Says He Holds No Grudges Toward N.C. State

amato1.jpgFormer N.C. State football coach Chuck Amato said Friday he doesn’t hold any grudges toward the Wolfpack, but admits that his return to Raleigh on Thursday will be an emotional one.  In the article, Amato also said that he and legendary coach Bill Parcells had  a conversation about The Chest’s days on the Wolfpack sideline:

Amato said Parcells told him, “Chuck, don’t hold grudges. People in the football world know what you did at North Carolina State and how far you brought that program. You did things nobody else could get accomplished. You raised about $100 million for facilities, which are second to none in country, and you brought enthusiasm and excitement to that place.”

The bye-bye Bowden entry aka a look at some candidates for Clemson (RUMOR UPDATE @ 2:40pm)

RUMOR: “BOWDEN TO BE FIRED THIS AFTERNOON” - from Block C (didn’t happen…yet)

Bowden

The Wolfpack’s idle week has obviously given us the opportunity to focus on some interesting coaching situations developing across the country at places like Tennessee and Auburn.

You can all but guarantee that Tommy Bowden will probably be run out of Death Valley shortly after the Tigers season-ending battle with South Carolina after Clemson’s season got worse with last night’s loss by Clemson to Wake Forest.

The play calling has been in question. Bowden’s job is in question. But nobody in Clemson’s program seems to have any answers right now.

Tommy Bowden Dead Index

A preseason top 10 ranking in your 12th season as a team’s head coach is a death sentence only if you’re the sort of coach who enjoys toying with failure, running the program perilously close to the gaping edge of a losing season, and then dramatically rallying in WWE style from a sure submission hold. If this sounds like your football program, then you are a Clemson fan, and your coach, Tommy Bowden, has once again run his career status at Clemson to “Mostly Dead.” There’s a chart and everything, so you know this is science.

The bye-week coaching conversation entry

As a follow-up to this interesting entry from earlier in the week, I think that the Wolfpack’s off-week provides us a perfect time to discuss some interesting coaching developments across the country.

It isn’t as if there aren’t any interesting match-ups this weekend; the college football schedule is full of great games. Of particular interest in the ACC Atlantic is the match-up, coaching stability vs coaching instability with Jim Grobe’s Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-1) battle Tommy Bowden’s Clemson Tigers (3-2) at 7:45 p.m. tonight night on ESPN.

NBA.com: Del Negro gets rolling as Bulls Head Coach

We refer you to our story from June linked here (that includes some great ‘Wolfpack talk’ from the 1980s for those that need a little insight and educating on some topics that comes second nature only to the die-hards)

The Chicago Bulls’ website has a nice article on our own Vinny Del Negro. They are using the same picture that we ran in our entry on the day Del Negro was hired (but has since been taken down off the internet).

Vols fans applying heat through their newfound apathy

Link to Sports Illustrated article.

I share this link and this topic for multiple reasons, including the broad fact that it is generally interesting news.

First, note how the STUDENTS have to PAY FOR TICKETS. I highlight this because we have not yet blogged about the current issue of the potential increase of student fees at NC State. Many NC State students/fans/alums don’t even know that many schools not only have student fees for athletics, but also SELL tickets to students. Can you imagine? IIRC, schools like Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU and others sell season tickets to students at reduced rates (approximately $100).

Fox: 10 Coolest College Football Coaches

You know that it is an interesting list when Joe Paterno is the top coach.

The ACC doesn’t land a single ‘cool’ coach on the list.

Check that…Clemson’s next coach makes the cut.

Skip Holtz, East Carolina Coaching what was once referred to as a directional school, Holtz has made football relevant again in a state (it’s North Carolina, but you probably knew that) known for basketball. When you grow up with a name like Louis Leo Holtz Jr., you had better learn to fight hard and fast. Holtz, son of ESPN analyst Lou Holtz, not only can stand up for himself and fight, he does it with a lot less saliva.

College Assistants Ride Salary Wave

Remember when Chuck Amato’s initial “million dollar staff” was big news? Seems a bit modest in 2008 - see more info here.

Some familiar names on the move

Back in 2005 we did a little “Connected Coaches Webrun” that just popped into my mind when I read this quick entry from The Sporting News.

When Brandon Miller left Ohio State last spring to get experience as an assistant coach at Butler after years of working for Thad Matta in administrative positions, Matta suggested it would be wise if Miller did not buy a house in Indianapolis. Matta knew there was a good chance Buckeyes associate head coach John Groce would be moving on to run his own program, and last month he got the job at Ohio U. Matta wasted little time inviting Miller to rejoin the Buckeyes staff, this time as an assistant coach. Archie Miller, brought in a year ago from Arizona State, will become Ohio State’s lead assistant. . . .

Another Valvano Player Hired as NBA Coach

Vinny D

Add former Wolfpacker Vinny Del Negro to the list of Jim Valvano’s former players who have made a big splash in basketball years after their playing careers ended.

Multiple media reports indicate that Del Negro is set to become the Head Coach of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

The deal isn’t complete, but sources said Del Negro will sign a two-year contract with a team option for a third season and be paid roughly $2 million annually. That will make him one of the league’s lowest-paid coaches.

Capel & Haith Rumors Swirl Around Columbia

We haven’t spent much time talking about the coaching carousel this off-season so we decided to open this entry for our readers to share things that they are seeing and hearing in the marketplace and to link interesting articles, blog posts, and internet ramblings.

Our neighbors to the South - whom we should play every year in basketball as some form of a ‘tradition’ game - seem to be talking most seriously about Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Miami’s Frank Haith.
